  1. The Post Oak busway looks to be a separate structure from this.

Schematic 1 from the TXDOT website above shows the proposed dedicated bus lanes: http://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-info/hou/notices/121015-schematic-01.pdf

Gray colored lanes in the plan and elevation views. Looks as though the bus lanes bump the express lanes out of the I-610 median south of Woodway.

Edit: Also looks like they want to rebuild the 610 main lanes over 59 (blue lanes in Schematic 2). I wonder why?

  2.

The planned route for Texas Central Railway’s high-speed train between Houston and Dallas would only bring the train as far as the 610 Loop.

But the Gulf Coast Rail District says to make the system viable the train needs to come into downtown, or there has to be some sort of commuter rail option that would link downtown with the high-speed line.

The Rail District now wants to study the possibility of a rail line along the I-10 corridor that would get passengers close to the downtown Amtrak station.

Gulf Coast Rail District Executive Director Maureen Crocker says a train could possibly run on the median or along the embankments. Crocker adds if the high-speed rail line doesn’t have an easy connection into downtown it could cause problems for everyone.

“It’s going to put a lot of pressure on the roadway network right at 610 and I-10, which is already one of the most congested parts of this region,” says Crocker.

  3. Curious about the origin of the name "Temenos." Surname? Street name? Wikipedia doesn't offer many clues, except perhaps this:

Temenos (Greekτέμενος; plural: τεμένηtemene)[1] is a piece of land cut off and assigned as an official domain, especially to kings and chiefs, or a piece of land marked off from common uses and dedicated to a god, a sanctuary, holy grove or holy precinct

    ...
    C. G. Jung relates the temenos to the spellbinding or magic circle, which acts as a 'square space' or 'safe spot' where mental 'work' can take place. This temenos resembles among others a 'symmetrical rose garden with a fountain in the middle' (the 'squared circle') in which an encounter with the unconscious can be had and where these unconscious contents can safely be brought into the light of consciousness.

Any holy groves or rose gardens in the renderings?

  4. my problem is mainly with the kooky diamond crown thingy...and as stated before, unless its some kind of Stargate type portal for aliens to communicate with us or be transported with then that part is indeed dumb. haha

     :P

I bet it teleports you to our city's other transdimensional portal atop the Memorial Hermann tower in Memorial City. Now that's how you beat traffic!

  5. I don't know if we should spin this off into another thread about the Port of Houston, but this story was posted today by the FuelFix blog:

Pair of Houston companies partner up to build new Ship Channel terminal

The 988-acre, TDWP Terminals property along Jacintoport Boulevard will ultimately support more rail delivery for liquid hydrocarbons, in addition to storage, blending and export operations, according to the announcement. The location offers access to inbound and outbound pipelines, as well as to barges and Gulf Coast refining centers.

  6. hey just a heads up...if you go to www.riveroaksdistrict.com then click on the entertainment tab, then iPic you will see a Become A Member Today tab.

this will allow you to get a FREE sapphire membership for a year and a free ticket to a movie exclusive to Houston new members!

    Awesome. Thanks for the tip.

Do we know when this theater opens?

  7. Three blocks isn't a lot in other fair weather cities, but in Houston, three blocks in 90% humidity in the middle of August with a 115° heat index is brutal, enough to ruin your day and your outfit.

In certain (all?) districts, we need to incentivize property owners to plant or maintain shade trees along public sidewalks. Shaded streets would encourage walking in Houston more than anything else, imo. They also look nice.  ^_^

  8. Story in the Chron today:

    Also, June 2015 presentation:

Personally, I want to see continuous east-west walk/bike paths connecting George Bush Park, Terry Hershey Park, Memorial Park, and Buffalo Bayou Park. We're already so close, only lacking connection along the bayou through the Memorial Villages and Rice Military/Camp Logan.

Exclusive: Proposed luxury rentals near Texas Medical Center to serve international patients

    per the business journal

    http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/index.php?app=forums&module=post&section=post&do=new_post&f=7

I think, maybe, you meant to paste this link instead: http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2015/05/11/exclusive-proposed-luxury-rentals-near-texas.html

    Here are some excerpts:

Heritage plans to demolish an auto body shop — Med Center Collision — that is currently on the site, and build a high-end rental condominium project on the property, CEO Kayvon Haghpeykar told the Houston Business Journal.

The project — called Aria at Medical Center — will have 27 rental units ranging in size from 1,500 to 3,000 square feet. The one- to three-bedroom units will be handicapped-accessible, fully furnished and feature modern, high ceilings and high-end fit and finishes. Rental prices will be about $3 or $4 per foot per month.

The project will cater to an estimated 20,000 wealthy foreign visitors who travel to Houston each year for cutting-edge medical care in the world’s largest medical district: Texas Medical Center.

Heritage is working with local architect EDI International, Inc. on the project’s design. Haghpeykar said he hopes to break ground on Aria at Medical Center in early 2016 and complete the project by the end of 2016.

    And the site location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Med+Center+Collision/@29.699654,-95.400743,17z/

  10. I saw this linked on Swamplot this morning. I haven't found a relevant thread, so here you go:

Stafford, Texas – The Stafford City Council has approved a plan to redevelop the 192-acre Texas Instruments site on the Southwest Freeway, just southwest of Houston.

Last year, Street Level Investments, the developer of the mixed-use project, said it is expected to include a 400,000-square-foot Simon Premium Outlet retail center, 600,000 square feet of office space, multifamily development and a hotel.

The site, with an enormous half-mile of frontage on the Southwest Freeway, has been the campus of Texas Instruments, which is vacating the property and selling it to Dallas-based Street Level, which would be leased by an affiliated company, Edge Realty Partners.

    http://realtynewsreport.com/2015/05/04/large-mixed-use-project-moves-forward-on-texas-instrument-tract/

My expectations aren't high - suburban outlet mall, apartments, office buildings - but perhaps a nice addition to the area. Does anyone have more details?

  11. City Centre is such a great success story that I can only hope is replicated many times over in Houston.

If I have one knock, it's that Bendwood Park is completely isolated from City Centre.

I guess it can be rectified in the future, but that would require Creme de la Creme to move and the elementary school to give up some of its land.

In addition, I imagine the neighborhood would resist this as it would effectively end their exclusive hold on the park.

The fact is, that patch of fake green space isn't enough to support the growth of this development for long.

I live in the neighborhood and I've had similar thoughts about Bendwood's future. However, I believe the park will definitely remain isolated from the development, even if its use increases as the local population grows.

Bendwood Park is surrounded by expensive single family homes on three sides and Bendwood Elementary on the fourth. Creme de la Creme and Town & Country Village to City Centre's south are owned by another firm. Town & Country has already made the leap from retail-only to a mid-rise office building and could feasibly venture into residential. However, even they do not have land directly adjacent to Bendwood Park.

Development spurred by City Centre has plenty of room to expand to the south and east before intruding into the neighborhoods. I can even imagine City Center and Memorial City merging into a contiguous district along Katy Freeway before a single home in Fonn Villas is torn down by developers.

You are absolutely right, though. Midway needs another plot of green space. That patch of astroturf is so crowded on weekends!
