  1. I believe that the Sugar Land location was at 16550 S.W. Frwy., Sugar Land, TX 77479 which is now a Mattress Firm. It's difficult to tell as everything in that shopping center looks the same. Another location was 6900 Southwest Fwy, Houston, TX 77074 which is now also Exclusive Furniture.
  2. They post Roast Beef on them in addition to the hamburger patty for sure. In fact it seems they still do on one burger. http://www.royrogersrestaurants.com/food/lunch-and-dinner
  3. I recently checked out the Genealogy Department at George Memorial Library, which happens to be where they store all the old copies of Newspapers on Microfiche. I scanned some old ads most are from May of 1992 however I also grabbed a few from February of 1998. I'm going to have to upload them one by one due to file size restrictions. We start off with An ad for Bealls which is located in the same spot that Burkes Outlet is today. According to Wikipedia the change in names was due to another company called Bealls already holding a trademark in this part of Texas. We also have an ad for Cinema 8 which was at the time owned by Cinemark. It is noted as being in the "Randalls Shopping Center" which would later of course become the Kroger Shopping Center.
  4. That's gotta be an Ex-Weingarten. The only thing else that comes to mind with that Stonework was Safeway, but based on the look of the rest of the shopping center this has to predate their entrance to Houston. Also afaik, they never did points. The Rosenberg Weingarten looked almost identical until 99 Cent Only covered it up with an ugly facade. You can still get a glimpse from the back however. Edit: Just realized it wasn't stonework, but rather brickwork. The Rosenberg location had it as well. If you switch to the 2008 view you can kinda make it out. https://www.google.com/maps/place/99+Cents+Only+Stores/@29.5573484,-95.800532,3a,60y,353.73h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s-5I64ozb95u1r7iatlr9zA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x86411c1a78165c83:0x9cd22ce26fc3401c!8m2!3d29.557642!4d-95.8006029!6m1!1e1
  5. Well I think we've found one for sure. 805 Gilmer returns if you search K&B Drugs Longview. I have received false positive searching Rite-Aid but nothing from K&B. Also that building definitely looks like an old pharmacy. Seems to be a thrift store now.
  6. Found this in this document published by the Retail Center at A&M! (Jeez why didn't I go there instead of giving U of H a bunch of money every year...) Rite Aid operates 3,975 stores in 32 states and in the District of Columbia. The company purchased the two largest privately held drugstore chains in the United States: Harco, Inc., based in Alabama, and K&B, Inc., the predominant chain in Louisiana. The 332 stores are currently being integrated into Rite-Aid. The five Texas stores are located in the eastern portion of the state. The company operates stores in the following locations: Louisiana 109 Texas 5 The company plans to build 1,500 new stores by February 2001. Most of these stores will be freestanding with drive-through pharmacy windows. Real estate efforts are focusing on the Western and Southern United States. In Texas, the company, operating under the K&B name also markets home health care and prescription plans. I took out the states other than LA and TX. The report was published in April of 1999. So it looks like they name may have stuck for longer than thought.. Also attached a copy of the document for preservation's sake. 1298.pdf
  7. Southern Retail's Blog has this comment on it. Also supporting the separate liquor store idea, there is a liquor store name K&B Liquor in Houston, and I know that's kind of grasping at straws, but there's a very odd looking CVS right across the parking lot. It doesn't look like a converted Eckerd, and HCAD has the year built listed as 1990.
  8. Okay, so here's what I've found so far. One address that is "suspect" 2435 Bay Area Blvd Houston, TX 77058. It's a former CVS strip center location. It doesn't look "Eckerd-ish" however. So it's possible that Rite-Aid sold it to Eckerd's who never had a chance to do any real remodeling before CVS moved in. And, that's about it.. The only other thing I really found was a list of Rite Aid's subsidiaries and under the K&B Texas Corporation section I found: Super Beverage of Texas #2, Inc. Super Beverage of Texas #3, Inc. Super Beverage of Texas #4, Inc. Super Beverage of Texas #5, Inc. Super Beverage of Texas #6, Inc. Along with a bunch of other stuff named Super. Some research shows the trademark is long expired but that it was active at one point, and registered in Houston! So K&B more than likely did do business here, if just through liquor stores.
  9. No idea if the flooding got that high again. However and educated guess would say yes.
  10. Yup it replaced a Romano's Macaroni Grill. The building was truly tiny in comparison to the old location. If you check out Streetview you can get a sense for how small it was. The black and white striped sign, was brought over from the old location. That location closed around 2014 along with a few other locations (Westheimer, and Katy). The building is supposed to be torn down for a Plucker's location. No idea what the progress on that is though. As an interesting side note the Tomball Location was highly influenced style wise by the original Katy Freeway location.
  11. Okay I found a reference in the Chronicle Archives to it still being a Kroger in July of 1996. Then by October of 1998 there's a reference to the store as I knew it, Memorial Market. Initially Memorial Market was a general grocer, but as the other locations closed the one in question became more and more Korean. Eventually changing names to Komart Marketplace, and finally just Komart. So that puts Kroger's exit sometime around 1997.
  12. Just as an update, both are still not open.
  13. I hope they go through with this! A line could easily be built all the way to Damon, as grading already exists between there an Rosenberg. Then you're only a short distance from Freeport, and that' the only area you'd need new grading for.
  14. They still are in business, but they have moved over to East Houston. Also checking the 3D view in Google Maps, you can tell that the current facade was added later. I think this puts the final nail in the coffin for the Pantry Foods theory.
  15. I feel like there's two sides of the coin to issues like these, and HEB is doing the right thing. They're giving the tenants plenty of time to move, they could of been total jerks and just ended all the leases and started tearing up the old stores, but they're trying to work with them.
  16. It closed long before it was torn down. The 610 location was one of many. Here's what the sign looked like. 2121 West Loop S Houston, Texas 77027 - Streetview 6486 Fm 1960 Rd W Houston, Texas 77069 - Streetview 5865 Westheimer Rd Houston, Texas 77057 - Streetview 10901 Katy Fwy. Houston, Texas 77079 - Streetview
  17. It certainly looks to be the right size, and location for a Pantry Foods. Can't find anything for sure online though. As ArchMemoH mentioned it was a Pricebuster. If you check out HCAD it was owned by Lucky, up until 2000 when it was sold to a Flea Market. The Flea Market is still is business, which leads me to wonder if this location ever was a Pantry Foods.
  18. According to HCAD it was Safeway 7598 until 1989 when it became Apple Tree 7958. It was sold again in 1991. I'm not sure if Photon rented the building out after Safeway shutdown the store, but before the building was sold. Or if it ever actually operated as an Apple Tree.
  19. I saw it on reddit a while back. I'm guessing it was just gossip.
  20. Anyone know when the extension from the East End to Newcastle will begin? Also does anyone know what's going on, near Krump Stadium in Alief? It looks like they might be adding an exit?
  21. If you don't remind revealing your source, where/how do you get access to the older Topographic Maps?
  22. Probably just weights in the bottom of the poles. Also they look slightly smaller than the holes.
  23. Yeah almost positive Old Richmond is Bissonnet.
  24. I had no idea Gaido's ever operated in Houston! My family preferred the formerly cheaper Casey's however. Trying to look up info on the Houston location proves to be confusing. It seems that a bunch of different family members operated restaurants under the Gaido's name across Houston and Galveston. Some info seems to support the idea that, the original Gaido's (as we all know it now) opened in the 40's on South Main, and after a few years, one of the partners sold their shares and opened the Galveston location. No idea when the S. Main location closed however, pictures that look like they're from the 80's or 90's exist. Interesting side note: A copy-cat version of the Cowboy Shrimp stood out in Richmond, next to some giant, often abandoned seafood restaurant for years. http://americathroughrickseyes.com/shrimp1.jpg
  25. While this is very much true, I would think that the company bought the land with the intent to sell. Maybe build a hotel/motel there, something along those lines.
