  1. I couldn't agree more.

    -50 skip cable

    -50 cheaper cell plan

    -600 no car payment

-700 stop eating out all the time at $$$ places

    -40 cancel the gym membership

Right there anyone can have an extra $1440/month of easy money. If you use it towards a mortgage of somewhere in town, savings shoot up even more dramatically.

$40 for gym? A good cross fit package for 2 can cost over $200 a month! lol. I would also add if you are a new graduate and hopeful for your future, just a bit of struggle today should turn into easy payments later once you account for pay raises and inflation while your mortgage payments stay frozen for 30 years. Meet anyone today that is at the end of their 30 year mortgages and it will amaze how extremely little they are paying for their house worth $300K+ today.

  2. The affordability calculators are not necessarily wrong. It just ends up depending on what your priorities are.  If you want to always have a new luxury car, go on frequent expensive vacations, retire when you are 50, etc. your "affordable" house is going to be lower.  It also can come down to how well you are able manage your finances. I still have a hard time explaining to reasonably intelligent people why financing a sofa or fridge costs so much more in the end than just paying cash.  What can really get you though is if that higher price is for more square feet because that means more cost to furnish and maintain.

  3. I lived on the route last year and it was great. It definitely gets pretty busy the last hour and if you have a good band nearby it can be extremely crowded. But still it was fun and probably helps if you have a fence in the front yard like we do. Plan to go out early instead of later if you want to avoid the heavy crowds.

  4. I am not surprised by the lack of progress.  There are better priced and more easily TABC licensed areas in other parts of the Heights.  Why bother with the hassle?

    .

It is interesting that the new rendition on the website does not reflect the new intersection island planned at 7th and Yale to allow a safer pedestrian crossing.  The new configuration removes several parking spaces that are depicted.

    .

Curious that the developer did not opt to orient the parking to the rear.  I guess keeping the historic buildings which then allows him to utilize decreased and grandfathered parking minimums was a bigger priority.

    .

Also, that looks like a nice dumpster placement right behind residences with no trees or extra high wall to block it.  In my opinion, the developer is insensitive to the neighborhood at best.

    .

Finally, it is interesting that the developer refers to a "White Oak district" of restaurants when it clearly apparent that planning a restaurant west of Oxford and east of Yale is doomed due to TABC licensing restrictions in that area (no dinner service at Revival, Gelazzi cannot serve pizza, and Happy Fatz is on the verge of closing their meal service because a home is being built on what was their parking lot).

    disgusting.

  5. iPic is suing AMC and Regal.  Looks like iPic was surprised with some provisions that the large chains had with some movie studios that prevent one theater from playing the same movie at the same time in the Houston market.  Anyone notice if iPic has been missing any major movies?

  6. The Delicious Concepts people that run Witchcraft seem to never ever give up no matter what! Based on the press the put out for their last change a month ago we had no ambition to ever go and it seems like they are not getting the uptick in customers they were hoping for.  Will they "revamp" the place again andfads try 4 different concepts in 3 years? Can't help thinking that being in such a small space next to a pay day lender and mattress store is helping.

  7. The historical swimming holes around there and other places nearby were spring fed.  They all dried up soon after development occurred in surrounding areas. If there ever was any clear water in the bayou it was likely due to these flows. Technically the goal is to get Buffalo Bayou safe enough for swimming but this isn't very realistic and is probably only the goal because of federal regulations.

  8. 6,600 sqft house and acre lot must be pretty far out. I am sure it is nice but taken the size of the house plus the additional hours in commuting I wonder how much time you get to spend actually seeing your family. Would be awesome for someone who works at home and doesn't care about the typical amenities that living in a big city provides.

Also the amount of crime in an area is typically related to population density. If everyone in the neighborhood has acre+ lots, one crime there is worth 7+ in the Heights. Maybe more like 10+ once you factor in the additional retail.

If I had that kind of money I would buy a house half that size and then another on a beach or ski mountain. Although maybe you have both lol!

  9. What other inner loop neighborhood would have a good mix of around 11 year old kids? I would think that anywhere inside the more expensive areas of the loops there is always going to be a smaller density of kids than you would find in a suburban neighborhood.  But if I had to guess what inner loop neighborhood had the most kids per capita it would be the Heights. I would also say to me it feels safe for a 11 year old to be roaming the neighborhood (my nieces are allowed to).

...so who is starting the build a pool club Kickstarter?

  10. In the Woodland Heights here. I have nieces around that age in the neighborhood and they seem to have lots of friends within walking distance around them.

To answer the question about who is moving in and out, new neighbors in the past years seem to be 50% doctors and/or lawyers (seriously is everyone moving in a doctor or lawyer??) with one or two small kids and then 50% emptynesters. The people moving out seem to be a mix of cases with a lot being related to old age issues.

  11. This is a big deal for beer nerd types. Not sure where all the money is coming from but to be able to pull in a brewer that is currently working with production similar to Saint Arnold is impressive. I would hope that means they are going all out and from the sounds of the press release they are. Along with the multi-million renovation of Fitzgeralds nextdoor it seems this intersection is getting its revitalization revitalized. haha.

  12. I got into a fight with a store owner about parking.  I was going to a place down the street and parked in the cut out area in front of a "Customer Only Parking" sign on the wall of the building (link below).  The parking is a bit weird because of the building overhang but to me it looks like that area is still public. And the sign didn't have a phone number on it and appeared to be illegal. Was I right in not moving my car and arguing with a crazy old lady? Anyways when I got back the truck was still there so I guess I won.
