Do any of you out there "own a piece of the Rock?"

Hell no. Too many fond memories of Almeda mall to want to see it go and maybe another instant neighborhood go up on that land. I was really bummed to see the old Almeda 9 East theater had been torn down and something was already going up.
Houston has so many malls that I wouldn't know which one to go to if I were to drive over there. But almost everyone I've talked to make it sound like the Galleria is the best one.

Anybody remember Bush Gardens? By the Budwieser plant...?
Yes, I remember going to Busch Gardens back in 1970 when I was 12 years old. We fed pieces of an apple to a baby elephant. My dad drank a free Busch Bavarian Beer in the Guest Center. I also remember ponds with huge goldfish swimming in them.

I have heard of Milby... but not familiar... what part of town?
And the next song will be LADY's Choice.
I found out that Milby High School is on Broadway in the area that I think is classified as The East End.
-
I forget you are younger than me. I graduated Waltrin in 77. By 1982 I had already been married and divorced. (not something to brag about, but the truth)
But it still cool that we remember alot of the same things.
I graduated from high school in 1976. I found out that had I stayed in Houston, I would have attended Milby. Are you familiar with that school?

Okay, random. Peppermint park, I too loved that place. I'm 26 years old now, but still remember it. I see it's old location down on BeltWay 8 as I pass. It's now and has been for years an old car fixer up place. That made me mad when peppermint park went out of business, for awhile I had a tee shirt from them that was red which showed two children riding on a flying peppermint stick. Anyhow like I said, random!
Well, I'm 47. I remember going to Peppermint Park by Gulfgate Shopping City (now Mall) when I lived in Houston from 1962-64. Are you saying that it went out of business fairly recently?

The theaters I would have liked to have seen were the Loews State and Metropolitan on Main St. From the pictures they must have been incredible.
It appears that the only kind of movie theatres that will be open are ones with 10 to 20 screens. I think that I can safely say that the days of the one or two screen theatres are well in the past.

if i remember correctly much of this drive in was standing in the early 80's. but i think it had already closed at that time.
Probably the only curb service restaurants that are still around are Sonic Drive-Ins, which are a chain. There are several of them over here 100 miles east of Houston. Are there a lot of them over there?

As an aside, I think Rice and other "elite" schools would be better off if they left their current NCAA conferences and formed their own. Schools like Baylor, Vanderbilt, et al, just can't compete with the likes of OU, Texas, Tennessee, Auburn, etc.
If the "academically-gifted athletic schools" would create their own conference (consisting of, say, SMU, Vanderbilt, Baylor, Rice, Tulane, et al), the games would probably be pretty competitive.
Then again, now that I think about it, I'm not sure there are even 8 qualified Division I schools out there that could justify creating a new conference! I mean, what other "smart" D-I schools located in the SE quadrant of the US have a football team?
When I was in college, I was talking to a professor who attended Cornell. I asked him why Ivy League universities didn't have bowl games. He said that it was because it interfered with academics.
Do you think that Rice University would qualify as Ivy League? Then it would play only Harvard, Yale, Brown, etc.
-
That's exactly what I'm saying. Rice University must have always been known for smart students. That's all that I know about that university. I graduated from Arkansas State with a 2.26 GPA, which means that I wouldn't have stood a chance of getting to go to Rice.
Has Rice University ever played in the Cotton Bowl or in any other bowl game?
-
What are you saying exactly? Most people still have to be very smart to get into rice.

Rice was talkin about nixing their football program a year or two ago. If they eventually do, I'm sure it will be torn down.
When I was in high school, when someone would say that they knew someone who went to Rice University, other people would automatically say: "He/she must be smart."
-
I've just taken an interest in Rice University. Has there ever been any year(s) that it won any championship? The only pro football player who comes to my mind who attended Rice was Tommy Kramer. When I attended the University of Arkansas from 1984-86, I remember that Rice University was in the same conference.
Edit:
1891: The William M. Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art filed its state charter in the Texas capital May 19, 1891.
1912: The Rice Institute.
1960: William Marsh Rice University on July 1, 1960.
Present day, in short, Rice University.

Sounds like a wonderful idea but probably wouldn't be that lucrative. It would take a bundle to keep that place cool enough for an ice-skating rink, I would think.
Chris Baker on KTRH said that the city is already paying $500,000 per year simply to maintain it while it sits unoccupied and unused.

Peppermint Park, that was the indoor amusement park @ 59 and the Beltway right (before the beltway was there).
Man I went there a few times as a kid. Then it turned into an auto shop. It is still there, but not what it used to be.
I remember a Peppermint Park near Gulfgate Shopping City (now Mall). Someone on the forum told me that it was on Reveille.

A friend of mine who works at M.D. Anderson is positive that the Old Prudential building is not coming down. Has anyone heard any updates on this? Is it still slated for demolition and inferior building replacement?
Is it still up?

I think that I also remember a NABISCO plant somewhere in Houston. I remember learning that it stood for NAtional BIScuit COmpany. I don't have any Fritos and bean dip in the cabinet. But I have some RITZ crackers and potted meat. That made me remember NABISCO. But the plant that I remember might not have been in Houston. Maybe someone out there can set me straight.
Now, to spread the potted meat on the RITZ!
I developed diabetes in 1998. Before that, I used to like to pour milk on a bowl of NABISCO Vanilla Wafers, let them soak, then crush them up and eat them.

If I did it would be purely for the novelty. If it is too theme parkish I am probably going to hate it.
Yes, it would be theme parkish. They said something about having some kind of a waterway and guest would ride around in some kind of a boat.

This store is still standing and apparently the beautiful facade is preserved under a covering that was added in the late 70's to look modern. It is off Main St and Lamar St next to the old Sakowitz Flagship store on Main and Dallas. What can we do to have the current owner clear the ugly modern facade, and uncover the ornate facade that stands under it? There is a display currently in the windows of the parking garage that was once Sakowitz. I know that the Wolfe Co. is redeveloping the Sakowitz building for retail. It would be cool if the old facade is revealed on the building next door to it.
Does any one know if a redevelopment or renovation of this property in the works? It would be great for the buildings fa

I think that would be the highest in Houston. I am not sure the nightly rate on the Four Season, Hillton Americas, Houstonian, or St. Regis, but I would be pretty suprised if you told me they were north of $225 (special engagements aside).
I was married at the Houstonian and we got a group rate of $129 a night. Of course that was also weekend rates.
During the show, Chris Baker had the producer call the Four Seasons to ask about their rates. They said that a basic room cost $200 for one night.

Instead of turning the Astrodome into a hotel, why don't they just make both a roller and an ice skating rink? Or is that a stupid idea?
-
On radio station KTRH, they were discussing the proposal to remodel the Astrodome into a hotel. The host said that if that did happen, the nightly rate for a room would be about $375. Would any of you out there be able and/or willing to pay that amount for only one night?

Great pic, subdude. I had forgotten they referred to the Flying Red Horse. In my memory, the one at W. Gray and Shepherd was white. The Magnolia bldg in downtown Dallas has been restored as a hotel and the big Flying Red Horse on top of it restored, too. There are pics on line.
I haven't been on the sidewalk on Main in many a year.
BTW, how far back does your collection of great pics go? How about the Iris Theatre, 612 Travis, 1920s?
I meant to say "filling/service" STATIONS. Just a typo.

How many actual "filling/service" are still around? Not many. I think that I can safely say that at least 90-95% of all Americans pump their gasoline themselves at convenience stores.

I laughed when I read this reply. The high school that I went to was called the "pretty boy's school" by other schools. Well, I'll be honest, they didn't have a good football team to speak of at all. Back when I was in high school in the 1970s, there were usually 10 games a season. I was a junior when they won five games for the first time since it opened back in 1961.
