  1. I drove by this multifamily apartment complex today. I never knew it existed. I wonder if anyone on HAIF has ever lived here? Definitely a hidden gem. Tucked away off Richmond and McCue towards Highway 59. Property website: https://www.galleriaparc.com/ Here's the photo I took today.
  2. There is a small Chase bank located next door to the Four Leaf Towers and also the Aspire Post Oak tower. The small bank is on the corner of a larger retail parcel. I can only imagine, in due time, that small Chase parcel will be will be sold and combined with the retail parcel for a mixed-use residential development. Chase could have a small branch, or ATM, on the ground floor of the new tower! Give it 10 years.
  3. I don't think this Wells Fargo Bank located at 4906 San Felipe Street, shares the same parcel as the next door, infamous BancorpSouth Center? I once read on HAIF, maybe 10 years ago, that Uptown/River Oaks has a lot of banks because it's a wealthy neighborhood. Rich people visit banks more often. When will this unique, kinda small, parcel be developed into something taller?
  4. I've always wanted to create this thread but never have. Has anyone ever shopped for their designer furniture at Roch Bobis? While located at 4810 San Felipe Street, I've passed by it a thousand times but never went inside. When will this small retail building be demolished for something taller? This is prime Uptown real estate! I'm the parcel can contain something that would be a higher density use.
  5. I was wondering if anyone knew the original architect for this early 1980s office building located on San Felipe in Uptown. All I can find is the most recent remodel architect.
  6. Came across this 1959/1960 photo of a barren area of the southwest freeway construction. Looking outbound toward Post Oak Blvd. at Westpark Dr. In one parcel of land, located off McCue Road, there is a mansion all by itself. Does anyone know whose house this was?
  7. Came across this arcade token on Ebay. Does anyone recall the game room located at 5146 Richmond? I believe this would be located in the (present day) shopping center across from Best Buy? The retail center with the Spec's Liquors, Alta Beauty, etc. etc. Can we date this business? I'd say 1960s or 1970s? Just a guess, no clue really. The Wiz Gameroom 5146 Richmond Houston, TX
  8. While looking at the Briar Hollow Estates plat map, I noticed San Felipe Farms near Buffalo Bayou, across from Memorial Park. The subdivision plate is dated December 1938. San Felipe Farms would have been 84 acres. What's this about? Rice fields? Would love to know more.
  9. I've noticed gun clubs have a cool formation in aerial photography. Found a historic Uptown gun club so I thought I would share my findings. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated June 15, 1924: Views Snapped On Post Party Jaunt Along The Westheimer and Bellaire Roads. Upper Left: The gun club out on the Westheimer Road with a front view of the Jordan Blue Boy in the foreground. The Houston Post. dated June 8, 1924: An Airplane View of Houston Gun Club John Winters and Ed Bond recently took the accompanying picture of the Houston Gun Club's up-to-date house and trap field.
  10. Does anyone know about this? I believe I found a small church on the corner of Post Oak at Westheimer! I went onto their website and their "about us" page mentions: Founded in 1939, The Church of St. John the Divine is a vibrant congregation dedicated to Changing Lives for God in Christ. Was this the original location before they moved to 2450 River Oaks Blvd? Cool find!! From the newspaper Southwestern Times dated July 5, 1951 : Wright Graduates from Baylor Med With High Honors Graduating from Baylor Medical College with high honors, Bob Wright of 4321 Cynthia will intern at the Jeff Davis Hospital, after which he plans to go to Japan as a medical missionary. Dr. Wright, who has lived in Bellaire for the past three years, has a wife and two children. He was lay pastor at the Baptist mission on Westheimer and Post Oak Road until his studies and hospital duty during his senior year forced him to resign. The Alvin Sun dated April 29, 1954: Grace Church to Attend Presentation On Sunday afternoon (May 2) members of Grace Episcopal Church School will attend the Annual Mite-box Presentation Service which this year will be held in Saint John the Divine Episcopal Church, Westheimer and Post Oak Road, Houston. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. Members of Grace School are asked to be at the Parish House, ready to leave at 2:45 p.m. Parents of the children will provide transportation. Aerial photograph of the building located at Post Oak and Westheimer in 1957:
  11. Amazing find here! Uptown sure had lots of physical activity going back in the day. I wonder if there are any photographs? The baseball field was also named Post Oak Park. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated July 21, 1923: Game Notice. The Post Oak team will play the George L. Glass No. 1 team Saturday afternoon at Post Oak Diamond. Sunday afternoon Texas Sporting Goods team will play at Post Oak. Post Oak has one of the best diamonds around Houston on a good five miles out on Westheimer Road. Seating capacity is grandstand about 400 people and accommodations for about 50 cares back of a 200-foot backstop 10 feet high. The Houston Post. dated February 17, 1924: Post Oak Notice. All Post Oak players are asked to meet at Post Oak Diamond Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. All players that do not have cars will please rig Hadley 7024 or Hadley 3867. All last year's players and others that wish to try out are asked to come out. Post Oak will have as good a diamond as any in the city, and a dressing room with shower, bath, and grandstand to seat about 30 people and a back stop about 150 feet long, from 10 to 20 feet high. Located five miles out on Westheimer Road at Post Oak.
  12. wow!! I never knew about this cool Uptown dance hall and grocery store until this week. Incredible history here! This is Uptown's version of the infamous End-O-Main Dance Hall on South Main. From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated December 2, 1923. Upper Left: Post Oak Dance Hall and Grocery Store located at the intersection of the Post Oak and Wetheimer roads. 12 miles from Houston. In the foreground, a side view of the new 1924 seven-passenger WillysKnight touring car. The Houston Post. dated December 31, 1923: Dance at Post Oak New Year's Eve Westheimer Road Under New Management Good Music
  13. Noticed this Loopnet listing be added, and then quickly removed a few weeks later. Did the property get immediately sold or did the sellers withdraw? 15. Never heard of this restaurant! I don't think you would find something like this at Westheimer & Fountain View today. Reminds me of that steakhouse on South Main that was demolished. Believe it was called The Stables? Does anyone have any memories here? Stagecoach Inn 6015 Westheimer, Houston, Texas Su 1-3213 Historic Stagecoach Inn of Salado, Texas; on Interstate 35, 50 miles north of Austin, has selected Houston for the second Inn to be developed by this more than 100 year old Restaurant Co. The Houston Inn features the same Award Winning Food that made the Original Inn Famous - Has been featured in Time, Life and Ford Ties Magazines
  16. Bering Drive Church of Christ is for sale. Talk about high profile property! The asking price of $26 million seems very high to me. This one might sit for a while. 1910 Bering Drive - 4 Acres of Residential Land Offered at $26,136,000 USD. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1910-Bering-Dr-Houston-TX/27637533/
  17. I was browsing the 1950 Sanborn map when I saw a manufacturing company next door to the Pin Oak Stables located near the present day Westpark & 610/59. Anyone remember this plant? Would love to see some photos. I could have sworn me and a fellow HAIF member was talking about this last year. I was under the assumption the plant was located on South Post Oak and West Bellfort where Meyer Park Shopping Center would eventually be built. Searched and couldn't find it. Wright Manufacturing Co. made rubber tile, and I think plastics. Looks like the plant and associated buildings was built in 1949. It's possible their plastic facility was located further down South Post Oak Road. Or maybe I'm just confused.
  18. Last week I saw a dumpster permit for the Residence Inn By Marriott Houston Galleria located at 2500 McCue Road. Kind of confused. I thought there was another Marriott close by, the Houston Marriott West Loop By The Galleria At 1750 West Loop S. Guess they are different hotels, just 2 miles away from each other.
  19. Anyone remember Tangier Club & Disco located at 2637 Winrock in the 1970s? Hello from Hollywood Feauring Christy Lane, Jill Jordan, Melba Peterson, Kandi Delight, Dachelle, and Erika Lane. Southwest Houston's Only Gay Club & Discog With You In Mind..
  20. What's the deal with this single family 1-story ranch-style home on the West Loop South 610 feeder? I guess this is one of those older residents who does not want to sell out to developers, or even TxDOT. This is literally across the street freeway from skyscrapers and luxury development. I wonder if there has been any lawsuits involved from/with this property? This is one of those Afton Oaks homes, that is notorious for protesting METRO/TxDOT expansions. Anyone know the address? I haven't looked on a map or even HCAD. I could just drive over there tomorrow.. Lets get this 1950s ranch-style home demolished!! (Sorry Historic Preservation Houston)
  21. I was browsing the publication Houston's forgotten heritage : landscape, houses, interiors, 1824-1914 and came across an article about Beatty's Truck Farm. Dancing at Beatty's Truck Farm, Sunday afternoon ca. 1900. North Post Oak Road wat Woodway, north side of Buffalo Bayou. Left to right: Harry and James W. Kennedy, Archie and Mitty Beatty, Sam Kennedy. Truck farms located on the outskirts of Houston produced fruits and vegetables that were sold from the farmers' wagons at the City Market on Market Square. Noted for its superior watermelons, the Beatty farm abutted Post Oak Road and Camp Logan (now Memorial Park) on the east. On Sunday afternoons Archie and Mitty Beatty entertained their friends with dancing under the pine trees. During hot weather the refreshments included watermelons iced down in large barrels.
  22. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated October 18, 1967 and came across an overlooked Hines development. Electric Living Center Will Give Many Answers To Homeowners The Electric Living Center, a new facility to serve as a consumer information center on all phases of electrical usage in the home, is being built by Houston Lighting & Power Company. The all-electric Center will be located on a 1.12-acre tract fronting on the east side of the West Loop (Highway 610) between San Felipe and Westheimer. Its proximity to the Southwest Freeway and Post Oak Interchange will make it easily reached from all parts of Houston. It is being built to HL&PCO specifications by Gerald D. Hines Interests and will be the second building completed in the Smith Office Park complex. Architects are Neuhaus & Taylor, consulting engineers, Chenault & Brady. General contractor is Harvey Construction Company. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls will form the 50-foot front and two 100-foot sides of the building, which will be heated and cooled by two electric heat pumps. Exposed structural material will be bush hammered concrete. The appliance display area will be in the front (west end) of Center. The general public will be able to inquire here about electric cooking, heating and air conditioning, home and garden lighting, kitchen design and arrangement, proper home wiring and the use of small appliances. The two electric kitchens--- One on the stage of the auditorium and the other at the rear of the building. --- Will be used for cooking demonstrations to groups meeting in the center. A luminous ceiling will light both the auditorium and display area. The ceiling’s light intensity will be controlled by a dimmer switch making infinite variations possible between zero- and 200-foot candles.
  23. I know Mitchell Westheimer had a 640-acre farm that was located off of Westheimer Road. There are two very famous Houston history websites that contain information about the farm. Tshaonline.org and Heritagesociety.org. https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/westheimer-mitchell-louis Westheimer purchased at auction a 640-acre tract extending from what is now Bellaire Blvd. north beyond what is now Westheimer Road in Houston. The tract became known as the Westheimer Plantation. It featured a large, plantation-style residence on the site of present Lamar High School, stables for the livery, and a racetrack. In the 1860s Houston had no public schools, so Westheimer built a school on his farm, hired a teacher, and allowed area children to attend free. A miller by trade, Westheimer owned a flour mill in Houston, became a hay merchant in the 1850s and 1860s, and built the first streetcar rails in Houston. https://www.heritagesociety.org/westheimer-family When he arrived in Houston he quickly bought up a 640-acre tract that extended from where Holcombe Boulevard is today and north to the present Westheimer Road, bounded by Buffalo Speedway on the east and Fondren on the west. After buying his land, Westheimer built a flourmill and also operated for a time as a hay merchant. I was browsing old newspaper and maps and I found a little more information. From The Houston Post dated January 4, 1896: For Rent or Sale- My farm containing 150 acres, three and one-half miles west of Houston, in good cultivation, on a good road. Parties must furnish their own tams. M.L. Westheimer, No. 1113 San Jacinto Street. City of Houston directory dated 1886: Westheimer, Mitchell L., hay dealer r. and farm 3-1/2 miles w of city, at Westheimer Station. The Houston Post had an article that is dated March 23, 1887: Accidentally killed. At a late hour this evening, Judge Railey held an inquest over the body of Solomon Coleman, a school teacher of this city, who was accidentally killed while hunting on the prairie, near Westheimer Station, five miles west of Houston. The Houston Post had an article that is dated April 3, 1887: Headlight Flashes. All passenger trains entering the city were on time this morning. -- Conductor John Gray of the Texas Western railway has a force of men at work placing ties on the road between this city and Westheimer Station. A Houston map dated in 1895: It shows two parcels of land labeled "1" and "3" that is labeled "Westheimer." The parcels look to be roughly 3 to 5 miles west of the city core. I'm not sure if both of these equals the whole 640-acres. It doesn't look like that much land. Maybe 150 or 200 acres? Seems like half of the farm is missing. Maybe it was left off the map. Closer in, on the left. There was also an oval race track on his farm, or located on his other parcels of land. A map dated 1921 shows an oval track on Westheimer Road near Buffalo Speedway. Race Track For Lease- I will lease my one-mile regulation race track, three and one-half miles from Houston, to good, responsible parties. Address M.L. Westheimer, Houston. I am guessing that whole square parcel of where the race track is located in the 640-acre Westheimer Station Farm. Looks about equal in size to the Texas Medical Center's 500-Acre BioPort campus on Buffalo Speedway.
