  1. Afton Oaks is a great neighborhood. I know of a house that's about to go on the market there for around $315,000.
  2. I second that. BJ's rules. Love the Willowbrook location. Damned good Chicago-style pizza, terrific beer. Great place to watch a game.
  3. Interesting website. Westfield changed rather quickly, KF changed even quicker. It's also interesting to look at the Neighborhood demographics feature. Looking at it, you see that the 77090 zip code is still largely white, but the schools aren't. http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...y=18#menuselect
  4. "Klein Pine" I like Klein Keyser (Soze) These have already been taken by CFISD: "Lakes" "Woods" and "Ranch"
  5. I believe Hot Wells is the former site of an artesian Health spa or resort (sanatarium) that was popular back around the turn of the century. It is now the home of a shooting range. http://houstorian.wordpress.com/2007/03/20/hot-wells-tx/
  6. Willowbrook is one of the top-performing malls in the Houston area, having enjoyed a virtual mall-opoly over a huge swath of NW Harris County (a market of around 1 million residents). They are about to face some competition and appear to be upgrading their offerings.
  7. I'd rather pay our government and elected officials more than have them corrupted by outside influence. Still, I think even that would be too much to hope for, because there's so much money involved. A hundred extra thousand in salary means nothing compared to a half million or a million in a blind trust in exchange for a multi-million dollar contract.
  8. Not in this case. They cut the timber and hauled it away. I watched them do it. No burning piles like the one on 249 or Telge.
  9. I don't mind re-development of existing properties for something better. I love Maggianos. If you haven't been before (to the one on Post Oak), you're in for a real treat.
  10. I believe they actually don't pay a nickel for the clearcutting, instead they use the timber for barter. The more trees are cleared, the more $$$ for the tree cutters. NewQuest strip mines communities.
  11. I recall seeing an article a few months ago that talked about a major national developer (on the scale of GGP) having purchased a very large tract in the area you're talking about.
  12. Those neighborhoods still look great. The only real problem (aside from flooding) is the fact that their school district's demographics changed so dramatically and subsequently went downhill. The neighborhoods themselves are still beautiful and have held up well. Keep in mind Kickerillo developed many of the neighborhoods in West Memorial (Nottingham Forest, Wilchester, etc.).
  13. Agreed. All the more reason we need to get organized to be able to explore Incorporation and get a referendum on the ballot, or explore other means. Harris County is too big an unwieldy to be managed effectively (keep an eye on Fulton County, GA). CF, If I'm not mistaken, I believe Bob Eckels lives over there in Woods of Wimbledon. I would like to see him throw some of his weight around to help protect area residents from these crappy developers.
  14. I nominate NewQuest Properties for Idiot Developer of the Year. Their penchant for clearcutting and tossing up cheap-looking strip centers is unrivalled. They're developing a heavily wooded parcel behind a neighborhood with million dollar homes over near Grant Rd. & Louetta. It's a nicely wooded parcel and there's really absolutely NO need for any more strip centers as there are numerous brand new centers that lie mostly vacant. So I asked them what they were planning on building at that location..they said "they didn't know"..."not sure yet"..."but we're clearcutting that land"...."you see, the beauty of Texas, rather the beauty of Harris County is that we can do anything we want with the land" Even if that means pissing off the communities you develop in? Pissing off the very customers they ultimately hope to serve by trashing their community with more junk they don't want? Brilliant strategy NewQuest. Brilliant. Good developers create lasting value, and are welcome in the community. NewQuest isn't one of them.
  15. Was HISD's neglect of the Robert E. Lee campus purposeful? It's a complete dump. Has it been closed yet? I don't believe there are any plans to renovate, am I correct? One would think this is by no accident. Perhaps if it had a different name, HISD might have put forth more effort to save it. My mother was one of the first graduates of this HS and named the yearbook.
  16. Alief was never upscale. It may have been middle class once, but never in the upper middle, mostly lower middle.
  17. Why in the world does the Alief Super make so much more than others from larger, better districts?
  18. Informative post from H20Buff. I think Bridgeland is going to be very nice for a tree-challenged community. I'm curious as to whether the developers have considered a tax-increment investment zone? Considering that the current mayor of Houston is amenable to making deals with far-flung suburbs in Houston's ETA, has the possibility of incorporation been discussed with regards to this community (granted there are only 100 or so residents thus far)...but it will eventually grow to 65,000.
  19. Again....guys...if you're going to debate the functions of Real Estate economics and buyer preferences on the aggregate, please start your own thread. This forum needs some thread discipline.
  20. Why not just raid John Lindsey's estate? He's made enough money on the sweetheart deals associated with this project to go ahead and fund it himself.
  21. I live in Longwood so I've got the option of taking either 249 or 290 depending on the traffic. I don't work downtown though, so it doesn't really matter as much for me. I think most people who live out here either work off 290, the Galleria, I-10 Energy Corridor, the Beltway, Greenspoint or FM1960 so its not that terrible of a commute....but until they widen 290, open the new Tollway on Old Hempstead Hwy and kickoff the commuter rail, downtown commuters are SOL.
