Baylor College of Medicine leaders officially commemorated the beginning of a three-year construction timeline for the new Lillie and Roy Cullen Tower located at the Texas Medical Center.
The details: The medical education and research facility, to date, has received $100 million in monetary gifts for its completion, according to Baylor officials.
Research space, officials said, will focus on large-scale data analytics that are vital to scientific breakthroughs.
The tower will be the new home for its School of Medicine and School of Health Professions.
The Cullen Tower will encompass 503,000 square feet and 11 floors that will offer educational space, classrooms, learning theaters, teaching labs and a simulation center to provide hands-on learning to Baylor students who are conducting clinical rotations.

QuoteThe 47-floor residential tower planned by local development firm Manifold Real Estate at 506 and 508 West Avenue on the west end of downtown Austin is pushing forward after securing a height-friendly rezoning earlier this year. The project is headed for the city’s Design Commission at the beginning of next week, seeking a ruling of compliance with the requirements of the Downtown Density Bonus Program necessary to reach its desired floor-area ratio of 20 to 1, which would enable the tower to rise to its full height of 565 feet.

Is that a construction trailer?

Those are renderings, the final product is OK. It’s height and immediate surroundings are the only factors that make it stand out.
The Laurel is designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz - same architect Hanover uses all over town. Hoping they use a different firm here.

During the day you’ll see them with drivers behind the wheel and at night is when they’re driverless and available as rides (9:30pm- 5:00am). Most of their fleet comes out then and they don’t operate under rainy weather. Max 3 riders (no one allowed in the front seat).
So far they only cover Downtown and a few neighborhoods in central Austin. I joined the waitlist and received my code to start in less than a month.
My first ride was fine- direct route to our destination, only problem we had is that it was very hesitant to turn right at the end of our trip. There was a lot of activity going on but it had plenty of opportunity to do so, pedestrians didn’t even have the ok to cross for the most part.
Second ride was definitely a ‘cruise’-the trip wanted to take a good loop around one end of Downtown before taking us home. We ended the ride at the halfway mark and walked back.
From my experiences they perform at the average speed limit, can hesitate on maneuvers in busy areas and can take you on a joy ride if you have spare time. They’ve only been here for less than a year and just began rides-I take it they’ll improve overtime and I’d try one out again.

Update
WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The city of Waco has approved to consider building a multi-purpose high rise building in East Waco.
The Brazos Gateway Tower project is in its beginning stage but it could bring residential and retail opportunities for the area.
Currently, all that has been approved for Brazos at Waco LLC, a DFW based company, is the zoning for the potential project.
They still have several meetings with the city to fully approve the project, but if given the green light the move forward they would break ground at the intersection of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. off the I-35 Frontage Road.

I’ve always liked this one. Surprised it’s moving forward given how long it’s been proposed- can’t think of any other condo project that has been in the works for this long.

all over reddit for some reason this morning.
This is a good development, even if it is close to the other target. That target south of 10 is always packed so I'm sure the economics of this probably work out... Glad were getting a multi-use building with street retail. This is in conjunction with the installation of bike lanes and pedestrian infrastructure on shepard and Durhan. More developments like this please.
That Target is the busiest one in Texas and ranks high in the nation as well- I worked there briefly for the holidays years ago.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is set to build a $668 million laboratory expansion, extending the city’s life science ecosystem.
The new research building, nominally called South Campus Research Building 5, will span 600,000 square feet in the heart of Texas Medical Center, at 1920 Old Spanish Trail. It will stand seven stories high with an additional two levels dedicated to a mechanical penthouse.
Design and construction is expected to cost an estimated $389 million before buildout, or about $650 per square foot, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Construction is expected to begin in September, with completion estimated for the third quarter of 2027. Boston-based Elkus Manfredi Architects, specializing in academic projects, is designing the building.
