  1. Thanks for the info. It may have been a urban legend? I thought I saw it in the newspaper or on tv but I was in my 20's then and now I am in my 50's. We did dig a few old antique bottles from a bottle dump some dating from the 1880's.
  2. Looking for info on homes that were located along Strang Road at Sen's Road near Brinson Point and Du Pont Plant. Pictures or maps showing homes. There was a murder case about a man who killed his family in one of these homes, it had a large pool. I think this happened in the 1980's? I remember going to this spot when I was younger and walking through the woods pass the old pool covered in green slim and the empty house in which the so called murders happened. This may have been a urban legend? Been almost 30 years so I am not sure? Need some great minds on this one..................
  3. In the early 1850's a Stage Coach Inn was established about 75-100 yards south of the gully in what is now Mangum Manor Park and most of the back yards of the houses that back up to the park from Poinciana. This was part of the Stage line from San Antonio to Houston. During the Civil war there was a battle of Bear Creek where 5 Yankee soldiers were killed. The stage came through that area just after the battle. They stopped the stage and put the dead soldiers on to be taken to the Inn for burial. They were buried under the big oak trees that are by the Tennis court. By Jean West/2009 99th Illinois Infantry September 8,1862 was sent to Rolla, Mo., thence, September 17, to Salem, Dent county, thence, November 20, to Houston, Texas. Was assigned to the Brigade of Brigadier General Fitz Henry Warren. Was engaged in a skirmish at Bear Creek, losing 1 killed, 4 wounded and 1 taken prisoner. I guess the 4 wounded died and made 5 dead Union Soldiers. GEW/2012
  4. The Morse Cemetery is losing the good fight. It may be no more................
  5. Looking for pictures of the Super Slide that was located on Telophone Rd. and Almeda Genoa Rd. Went there as a kid. Slid down on burlap sacks. It was a ruin for many years and I wished I had taken pictures of it. Thanks for any help!!!!!!!!!?????????????

  8. From website Burials of Harris Co.,Texas. Galena Park Cemetery? (w. of Clinton Dr, n. of the Houston Ship Channel, about 200 yards from the old Dickinson Gun Plant site. The cemetery is surrounded by a 4 foot cement wall.} I was just wondering myself were they got this info?
  9. Looking for info or location of the old Dickinson Gun Plant site. Near there is or was the Galena Park,Cemetery? West of Clinton Dr, north of the Houston Ship Channel, about 200 yards from the old Dickinson Gun Plant site. The cemetery is surrounded by a 4 foot cement wall? Could this location be reach? Thanks for any info.
  10. I stand corrected. The graves were moved, not sure if all were moved? I found the family plot at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Kuhlmann Family plot, section C. Still trying to figure out who is where?
  11. Here is a map with more detail of the Kuhlmann Cemetery. Not to scale.......
  12. I went out to the Kuhlmann Family Cemetery today on Roseneath. Went back in the woods were the cemetery would be. Near the back of the woods, next to a small gully is the 30' by 30" wall of hand made bricks. This is were the graves of this family would be. There are no markers in this area. BUT down a small slope in the gully is two marble stones that would be from the cemetery. The large one is to heavy to turn over to see if it has a name on it . The other small one is blank. These may be the bases to the gravestones that once were there. I don't think the graves have been moved. I could be wrong. Here is some pics from it.
  13. I was wondering if anyone has heard of Eden Park in Houston? The artifact was found near Magnolia Park and dates 1910-1930's? It may be from somewhere else. Top says EDEN Middle has a 4 and bottom has Park on it. Could this be from a Houston park?
  14. I received a small box of Freedman Plantlets in the mail last week. Already planted and they grow fast. The cost is FREE!!!!!! FREE POSTAGE. Really nice lady.!!!!!!!!

  17. It is the Evergreen Negro Cemetery, Est. 1896. The City of Houston cut the cemetery in two when put Lockwood thru it. Graves were moved elsewhere??? Cemeteries of Harris Co.,Texas by George E. Wolf Jr.
  18. Looking for any info on the SACRED HEART PARISH, 3617 Main St., Houston,Texas. Have photo dated 1936. Any history on Church and Church building????? Photos of said church???? Thanks
  19. The old Church of St. Vincent de Paul (Was located at Franklin Ave. and Caroline Street) first mass in 1842. The church purchased a tract of land for burial purposes from the Kennedy estate. Which became St. Vincent Cemetery. John Kennedy was murdered outside of the Kennedy Corner Building in 1878. He is buried in the St. Vincent Cemetery. Mainly Irish-Catholic, the cemetery was founded in 1853. Early French and Italian settlers, veterans of San Jacinto, Confederate and Union soldiers. (Dick Dowling) hero of Sabine Pass-Civil War, was Irish is buried there. Many were buried here in 1867 during the yellow fever epidemic. The City of Houston condemned the cemetery in 1871. The cemetery was damaged in the 1900 and 1915 hurricanes. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (1913) Present Church built 1923. George E. Wolf Jr. Cemeteries of Harris Co.,Texas
  20. I am just saying they should take care of this cemetery. I don't care if they crawl all over the graves which we do not do in our country. It is in a locked gate and protected from the outside but is slowly being destroyed from the inside. Many buried here were Irish. I don't care where you are from, it still is disrepectful..........
  21. I went to this church on Jan. 9,2009. I needed to take photos of the St. Vincent Cemetery. The church was built in 1923. Got permission from FATHER RICK to go into the cemetery which is behind a locked gate. Sorry to say but the cemetery is not in great shape. I took photos in 1985 and it looked better back then. Loose stones are in their wrong spots. Turned over gravestones. Missing linch gates. Some gravestones grouped together and cemented on a concrete base. Benches and shade covers built over graves. Trash on grounds, tree limbs piled on top of graves. They need to take better care of this cemetery!!!!! Thanks George E. Wolf Jr. Cemeteries of Harris Co.,Texas www.freewebs.com/boneyardwolf
  22. I drove by Rufus Cage School on Nov. 20,2008. Walked around the fence which was open and took a lot of pictures. It now sits empty and unused. The metal rain cover over the porch has fallen. The wood trim on the top and the wood covering the porch is damaged and has large holes. I went to this school in 1965-1968. I sure would hate to see another Historic Houston Building get torn down because no one cares. Here is my website on this school. http://cageschool.webs.com/ Thanks, GEW
  23. It was used as a farm area for the poor but mainly to bury the poor. On death cert.'s it states that the person is buried (Poor Farm, or County, or P. F.) I went thru death cert.'s 1910-1912 and already have 500 persons buried there. The cemetery was in use 1894-1937. There were a lot of people buried there. In 43 years that would be a lot of burials and a large area would be needed. Guessament of 43 years X 200 burials a year = 8,600 graves?
  24. The POOR FARM was a cemetery for Harris Co.,Texas. 1894-1937. In 1937 all remains moved to the newer Harris County Cemetery in one mass grave. I am going through death cert.'s and making a list of those buried here. It would state burial at POOR FARM or COUNTY, P. F. Most are black, some white and hispanic. Large number of stillborn and young babies buried here also. Very sad. Being poor really sucked. Most names are lost forever. Hope to have a list soon. GEW
