How is the city allowing the owner of that shopping center to be a nuisance to all the people who drive through Lynn Park on Drexel and on Westheimer with the construction halting and using the city's sidewalk?

Further, the parking garage in that center looks hazardous.  Looks like it's about to fall.  How are they getting away with it?

That parking garage is a waste. They could eliminate so much surface parking and meet minimums parking requirements.

    a) because the City of Houston (in general) does not care about traffic nuisances, walkability, or inconveniences to its citizens... but maybe if the white folk make enough noise they will....

    b) see item (a)

Partly because the city is just plain lazy. I joined Bike Houston to help clean up a section of bike path on Chartres St this weekend that took less than an hour. It makes you realize how much the city doesn't do.

Assuming each lot along Palmer and Ennis have their own driveway, on this square block I count 18 opportunities for vehicles to collide with passing pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. Kind of a miss opportunity and disappointment.

The city hasn't adopted the ordinance change just yet. We'll see the changes soon enough in future builds

  3. Losing the old Houston Post building, Hogan Allnoch building, and the old DA building still breaks my heart. Not to mention the demolished buildings behind the Lancaster Hotel. The old Incarnate Word and old Sacred Heart as well. So much potential for all of those buildings. We have saved quite a few buildings as well but it just sucks how much potential those buildings all had to add to the vibrancy of downtown.

The developments in Houston have been very abysmal honestly. Most major sites are being developed as either HUGE gas stations or strip centers with a sea of parking facing the street. The only thing Houston has really done is remove parking mandate in midtown and create market based parking in EADO, while the majority of Houston is left exactly the same.

That's why I don't get why the developer of this project couldn't have used better judgement in the layout and use of the land. If the goal is 2030 to remove all parking mins, then that's too long. I say no later than 2025, and I'm being kind.

It's a long narrow, piece of property, an Insurance company owns the property/building facing Caroline St. They had no choice but face it toward Webster St. and I'm glad they put the parking behind the building instead of in front of it.

I think that's the most important thing. The parking is in the back and pedestrians don't feel like an afterthought for the neighborhood. I actually like the design though.

  6. The food may have been good but the design concept was terrible. Anytime someone decides to paint a palm leaf roof, it's a recipe for disaster. Not to mention painting the thing black of all colors. The space just didn't seem inviting nor eye catching. I use to live down the street at Residence at the Heights. This part of town still has a ways to go.
