lockmat
For the first time since the 1930s, Eskridge said, "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum," the mint mark and year of issuance will be engraved on the new coins' edge."We want people to focus on the new faces of the coin," she said. " ... The opportunity of teaching history and geography through the coin is phenomenal."Did they mean to say will not?Last time I recieved a dollar coin was at the post office getting stamps. I guess since nobody uses them, government places get stuck with them. For those of you who travel to Europe often, what do you think about carrying around more coins than paper money? I guess it wasn't too bad for me while I was there. It'll never catch on here.
editor
I think they mean on the actual EDGE of the coin -- the round part, not the flat circle part.

It'll never catch on here. They meant what they wrote; taking the mint mark, date of issuance, and "e pluribus unum" from the face of the coin and putting it on the edge effectively unclutters the face and allows foxus on the subject, the president figure.I think dollar coins are great! Or more to the point, would be, if more vending machines accepted them. Vending machines are the ideal use for these, in my opinion. Places like the post office and Metro have dollar coins because their vending machines accept the coins. It'll catch on here if the vending machines are generally reconfigured I think, especially in light of inflation: money is only worth half what it was 25 years ago, and that trend is not something that will change direction. As the nominal values of things go up, higher denomination coins will make more and more sense.

In every other country that has issued higher-denomination coins the corresponding note has been phased out (except for a Scottish
ssullivan
I wish the US would go strictly to $1 coins, and also issue a $2 coin. Sure, you end up carrying around more coins, but the financial savings to the country would be huge. I know it would be unpopular, but if you don't give people a choice, they'll soon get over their petty complaining and just deal with it.For me personally, I use so little cash that it's not a huge issue. 99% of my purchases are with a credit or debit card. I've gone for weeks at a time with no more than $5 in cash in my wallet.
Subdude
Put me down as someone who would not soon get over my petty complaining and just deal with it. I would pettily complain for years. I can think of other ways for the government to save money than by inconveniencing everyone by eliminating the dollar bill and making them carry stacks of coins. Some places don't take cards(take aways and local shops). So I use cash a lot.I HATE getting back a fist full heavey coins.
