The U.S Census Bureau has now documented that.The bureau released a report at a Dallas car dealership earlier this month showing SUV registrations in Texas nearly doubled from 1997 to 2002. The 97 percent rise in Texas SUVs was higher than the 56 percent rise in the large vehicles across the United States. As of 2002, Texas had 1.8 million registered SUVs.Drivers adjusting to change on Polk from one-wayDrivers are adjusting to a new traffic pattern near the George R. Brown Convention Center.The city has changed Polk from a one-way to a two-way street from Avenida de las Americas to Chartres Street. Officials expect the change will produce better traffic flow to Chinatown east of U.S. 59 and ease access to parking lots.Park renovation will include street improvementsA renovation of Elizabeth Baldwin Park south of downtown will include improvements to several nearby streets.The Midtown Redevelopment Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the park and road enhancements. The Baldwin Park Neighborhood Streets Project will include Anita, Dennis, Drew, Elgin, Jackson and Rosalie.Despite West Loop work, official says wrecks upEven though the Texas Department of Transportation has spent about $50 million to rebuild West Loop through Bellaire, at least one city official is worried that the number of wrecks has dramatically increased.City Councilman Pat McLaughlan has expressed concern to state lawmakers about a spike in collisions near West Loop and U.S. 59, the busiest freeway interchange in Texas.
