It was a seaport and, like its rivals, Mobile and New Orleans, took a more relaxed view of racial separation than did the inland towns of the South. There is a VHF video floating around that I rented in the 80s, "Great Boxing of the 20th Century" or something like that, that has an actual movie of a Johnson fight in, I think, 1909. He was supposed to just spar with this guy as an exhibition and then the other guy decideshe was going to try to actually hurt Johnson. You can see Johnson look kind of surprised then turn it on and begin to just pummel him. The narrator points out how some of the guy's teeth were visible on Johnson's glove.
