lunchbox
I've heard a nasty rumor that the River Oaks Theatre is getting torn down, and getting replaced with a parking lot. Someone PLEASE tell me that this is not true.

klein
Should The River Oaks Theatre be saved?
Firebird65
Should The River Oaks Theatre be saved?I can't imagine why anyone (other than the developer) wouldn't want the River Oaks Theatre saved, but what the real question is: What steps ought to be taken or what laws should be in place to ensure it is saved? Or should anything be done other than to cross fingers and hope?It is a piece of property, after all, and around here, a person or company can do almost what they want with their property. If you force them to keep a building they don't want, is that a good thing or a bad thing? Native Montrosian
Not to be rude Bearkat and Houstontexas, but you're in the Historic Houston section complaining about....old buildings?
TJones
Bearkat, are you serious ? Then I bet you cried a river when they tore down the "NEW" Cineplex Odeon theaters on Bering a few years ago to make some nice new $200k condos, didn't you ? Vertigo58
This is like Torn Between Two Lover's and I am feeling like a fool.Part of me says SAVE only because it is a Houston institution and because I strongly support historical preservation and such, however...the reality is the place is just too small for today's crowds and it has been renovated inside which I hated anyway. So cannot be altered anymore. The parking is the worse, etc. Too close to the street. okIf I had a billion dollars, I would get original sketches and just build exactly as original but away from this area. Glad we enjoyed while it was not in this damned tug of war.
memebag
My fantasy is that some guilt ridden capitalist buys it, donates it to the MFA or Rice, then they restore the balcony and turn it into a repertory theater. Then I'll have a place to take my daughter to show her what movies used to be like.In reality, we'll just watch all of those great films at home.
