Good Afternoon All,

hope your day goes well !

Question have you had any experience , advise , or suggestions on the following ?

On friday I mowed my yard and used one small bag of Vigoro Lawn food from Home Depot and on

Tuesday noticed some discoloration on some areas ? Is that normal when fertilizing ? Did I

damage the grass ? Can anything be done ?

The grass before was normal and maybe wondering this just happened with the lawn food ?

Thank You

It's possible you over-fertilized. It's easy to do in this heat, which causes the grass to "burn" a bit. You'll see it in stripes on your lawn, if that's the case. If it's round patterns or splotches, you could have chinch bugs or fungus.

If you over-fertilized, be patient and POUR water on the affected areas. Some grass will die away, but it will come back thick and green if you water it heavily three times per week. I mean HEAVILY.

If it's bugs or fungus, don't do the heavy watering thing -- go to Lowes and try a spreadable bug killer and/or a fungicide.

Given your timing, I'd say you overdid it on the fertilizer.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use a "WEED AND FEED". On Saturday mornings on 950am, there is a guy with a great garden show. If the discoloration is only in cetain spots, you may have a cinchbug problem.

I second that....and here is a link to the 950am gardenline "fertilization schedule" for st. augustine lawns:

Circular patterns = Fungus (buy some Fungicide or Corn Meal)

We've had a lot of rain the past 30 days, and lawns are susceptible to the fungus. Mine has it.

Random brown splotches = Chinch Bugs (treat with Bug-Out)

Not likely, as again we've had a ton of rain and Chinch bugs like hot dry weather. They usually hit the hottest, sunniest parts of the yard near the concrete.

Good Afternoon All,

Thank You all for the helpful advice !

I dont think its the Chinch Bug cause I had this before and treated it .

So if I did over fertilize the yard what can I do ?

Also it was a small bag and I did not use the fertilizer spreader since I was only using a small bag

could that affect it ?

Thank You

Yeah, if you didn't use a spreader, I'm pretty sure you dumped too much on your lawn. POUR water on it. The recent rains will have done a lot of the work for you. Keep it up for the next few weeks -- three times a week, if we don't get lots of regular rain.

I typically fertilize once every month starting in November and ending in April with an organic fertilizer that I get from Wabash. Then in the spring and summer I just make sure it stays watered. You always run the risk of burning your lawn when you fertilize in the hot summer months.

Hey guys,

Stumbed across this thread from google. I also live in Houston and was researching this condition i have in my lawn. White patches in various spots. It looks like white powder over the blades of the grass and if I use my foot to move the grass around in that area, the white patches turns into a black powder and disappears. Do you guys know if this is fungus or a bug?

Agree it sounds like over-fertilizing... I did the same thing a month or so ago b/c I made the mistake of using liquid weed and feed - had the water pressure high, didn't know what I was doing, and I swear I must have overdone it by 20X's (seriously). It started looking rather thin and yellowish, but I did what's been rec'd on here - watered the heck out of it a few times - and all of the rain we've had lately took care of the rest. Yard looks great now, so hopefully yours will bounce back soon

I agree! WATER, WATER, WATER and more WATER. From experience, water is always the trick and when using fertilizer, LESS is always the best. B/c a small amount of fertilizer will not seem like enough, but it's always more than enough. Mainly b/c a small amount will induce growth and anything extra will induce burning and future overgrowth.

Guys, that topic was over a year ago. But "MajorD" has a question that I would like the answer to as well. Does anybody know if those are fungi spores?
