hindesky
A recently constructed one-lane roundabout in Houston's Northside is in danger of removal by Mayor John Whitmire. According to Houston resident Tom Reeve's post on X, Whitmire was seen touring the roundabout on Irvington at Patton with Metropolitan Transit Authority (METRO) Board Chair Elizabeth Brock and Houston Public Work officials on Monday. After a polite conversation, Whitmire told Reeve the new configuration would be torn out. https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/transportation/article/irvington-ave-roundabout-whitmire-19871041.php Bankrupting Houston one day at a time. Nate_56
A traffic signal at this intersection seems more appropriate.
hindesky
I drove it recently when headed to take pics of the LBJ Hospital construction, had zero problems, it requires you to slow down which is the whole reason for creating these. 5
JLWM8609
Sounds like the issue is operator error. Maybe more HPD enforcement or the addition of rumble strips, speed tables, raised crosswalks and yellow caution beacons will help get the message across to slow tf down?
cspwal
Quote Her small business has seen a decline in orders, with her flagship Mother's Day event seeing fewer orders than usual and many regular customers telling her finding parking in the area is difficult with the new roundabout. How does a roundabout affect parking?!?

I'm all for roundabouts but looking at this one on google street view it looks confusing and hastily built. If you're gonna built it, built it all the way. Not just some paint and slotted curbs. It would also make it harder to remove by a new mayor .. Edited Wednesday at 07:55 PM by Nate_56
JLWM8609
ABC 13 interviewed a resident who thinks a traffic light will solve the problem because you can't miss that at night. I've seen WAY too many accidents in that area caused by red light runners, esp around 610 and Hardy/Elysian. There are bad drivers all over town, but Near Northside drivers are a different type of bad. I've personally witnessed drivers going 60 miles an hour down narrow neighborhood streets, running stop signs, and turning right from the left lane. They're the reason people have to get dash cams and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, but I digress. The video shows people careening through the circle at high speed. It's not the circle's fault that the drivers aren't paying attention. If they'd been driving at appropriate speeds and paying attention, they wouldn't have wrecked. The idea behind a traffic circle is to make you slow down. These drivers didn't slow down. They're deliberately driving dangerously and getting rightful consequences. FAFO. You shouldn't have been doing 50+ in a 35 zone. I'd rather they keep smashing into signs and curbs and having single car accidents instead of crashing into cars and people. https://abc13.com/post/northside-roundabout-irvington-patton-stirs-controversy-after-houston-mayor-john-whitmire-decides-future/15488879/ 4 hours ago, cspwal said: How does a roundabout affect parking?!? Looking at old street view maps, she's got a tiny lot. Barely room for 3-4 cars. Looks like people could park on the street on Patton if the lot was full. One of those lanes on Patton was replaced with a bike lane.

cspwal Posted yesterday at 01:02 AM Share Posted yesterday at 01:02 AM I hate speed bumps on public roads but that might be needed here
