Recommended Posts

Thanks for coming out to Glenbrook Valley last Sunday to tour these awesome houses in hopes of finding new preservation-minded owners for them. We had about 100 folks attend! Look for our next event this Sunday in Meyerland.

May Mod of the Month

Houston Mod invites you Sunday, May 26, 2024
for a Mod of the Month open house event from 1-3 PM.

Tour two exciting vintage modern houses located in the Glenbrook Valley Historic District that are seeking preservation-minded new owners. Glenbrook Valley is located about 9 miles southeast of downtown Houston.

Thanks to Houston MODern Market for sponsoring this FREE event.

This notable vintage modern house has been featured in Atomic Ranch Magazine and in Houston House and Home. It was a show house for the neighborhood - featured on the 1954 Parade of Homes when new.  The split-level rear elevation is all glass, viewing a verdant hillscape. The recent restoration garnered a Good Brick award from Preservation Houston.

This grand vintage modern house originally cost almost eight times the price of an average house of that time. Thankfully it has been thoughtfully maintained, with fantastic features - including a giant curvilinear living area with centered circular fireplace, terrazzo floors, a deluxe array of original lighting fixtures, and outstanding vintage kitchen and bathrooms all still delivering their intended impact.  This neighborhood landmark was designed in 1957 by Jonathan D. Dansby, Jr. (1916-1971).

About the Glenbrook Valley Historic District:
In 2011, after a three-year effort, the neighborhood of Glenbrook Valley, consisting of 1,256 houses, was designated Houston's first historic district outside of the Loop 610 Freeway and is believed to be the largest mid-century era residential historic district in the United States. While visiting, note the recent vintage-styled neighborhood entrance markers, extensively landscaped medians along Broadway and the many newly reconstructed streets with new utilities throughout the area plus the ever-improving condition of the houses and landscapes.

Nearby are the 1940 Air Terminal Museum and the Houston Botanic Garden.
