The postwar glut of quonset huts was driven more by an excess of supply than anything else. The military manufactured somewhere between 150,000-170,000 of them during the war, and afterward whatever they hadn't used was sold off as military surplus.

Like quonset huts, you rarely see any military surplus stores anymore, but there used to be quite a few of them in Houston. Most people probably don't remember that Academy Sports & Outdoors originated as a chain of "Academy Super Surplus" stores that sold military surplus equipment and supplies, and they didn't start selling sporting goods until the early 1980s.

I love military surplus stores.  Such interesting things.  I have an ammunition case for a machine gun that I use as a first aid kit.

I noticed one on the East Freeway over the weekend, but not in time to stop and check it out.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think there are any of the "old-school" milsurp stores left that have a decent selection of actual military surplus. All of the newer ones I've been to just have new, cheaply-made repro items and what's often disparagingly referred to as "tacticool" police/paramilitary gear.  Col. Bubbie's in Galveston was probably the last real surplus outlet, and they've been closed for a few years now.

When I was a kid, I could spend hours browsing in the Academy Super Sports store that used to be in Northtown Plaza (Tidwell at 45) - there was always something of interest to be found.

There were a number of old school-style ones in the deserts of California and Nevada, which make sense since there were so many military bases close by.  Maybe there's some out near San Antonio.
