Guest danax
Living on the East End, I travel through the "old sides of town", the east and south, often and love some of the old reminders of how Houston once was. While old buildings are relatively rare here, the rarest of all architectural elements is probably the old sign. How likely is a business to retain the same sign for half a century or longer? More common is the abandoned commercial building.
Modernceo
Cool signs and photos. Thanks for sharing those. My fav would be the industrial equipment signage in the art deco font.
Subdude
Great photos, thanks for posting. I especially like the Orlando Plumbing sign picture. The winter look and the birds nearby really give it a great but sad atmosphere.
Jeebus
Bellfort, just east of Northdale: Black & White Version: I'm a huge fan of old signage. Glad to see a thread about it.

sevfiv
I like the old Burger Chef sign, too. But, man, that stretch of Bellfort looks like a post-apocalyptic wasteland. there were alot of neat things along bellfort at one time or another...that stretch of bellfort (sunnyside to telephone or so) does look awful... the nicest stretch of bellfort is between stella link and buffalo speedway

TJones
Sev, I found a great old sign yeaterday, I was traveling down N.shepard, just past W.Gray or just before, there is an old old PUB sign still standing with a Coca-cola sign attached on top. It obviously was an old wateringhole of some sort. It was on the west hand side of the street.
RedScare
Looking at the Passport Photo sign, I don't know what a "Neckless Ring" is, but I don't think I want to know, either.
gnu
foxmulder mentioned this station and signage in another thread...so I popped by there to check it out. anyone know if this was original signage for this station or just someone being nostalgic? i was hoping for a dinosaur logo though. It's on the corner of Ahrens and Howard.

I think, probably, they didn't know how to spell "Necklace".

Forget the "neckless rings" how 'bout those "velvet paintings". Good velvet painting outlets are hard to find these days.

I forget the name of it, but I remember someone told me that at one point this place had the oldest continuous liquor license in the city. I was riding around and stumbled on that Orlando Plumbing sign. It's on Elysian.
Guest danax
I was riding around and stumbled on that Orlando Plumbing sign. It's on Elysian. Wow. I can't hide anything from you. I don't know if you noticed the old victorian next to it. The gingerbread is unique and the interior still has fine woodwork. Too bad it's tagged for demolition. The same guy (Tony Orlando (can't be THE Tony Orlando)) owns the house and lot the plumbing co. sits on. It's one parcel I think. I believe that strip will be the fast lane of the Hardy Toll Road fairly soon.
