editor
Hear the sounds of carolers, handbell choirs and bagpipers echo through the street. Stop to watch Victorian-era jugglers and magicians perform on corners. See the streets filled with Victorian-clad Bobbies, Beefeaters, gentlemen and ladies. Enjoy delicious foods and extraordinary merchandise from traveling artisans, craftsmen and cooks. Close your eyes and you will be taken back to the age of Charles Dickens when the British Empire was at the height of its glory and power. Open them and discover yourself at Dickens on The Strand, Galveston, Texas' internationally renowned Victorian Christmas Festival.

Boris
Went to this years Dicken's on the Strand. Had a blast. If you ever have a chance take the kids to this one; they will love it. I was taking photos all day and just as the sun went down my battery went out. So, not too many night shots and I missed shots of the night parade. But, I was able to take over 300 pics. I eliminated as many as I could, but still ended up with posting about 150. Sorry, for the number of pics, but I just couldn't pick any more to leave out. TheNiche
Was that Confederate post some sort of recruiting station for reenactors? If not, they really should do that. What better place to sign people up than an event like that?
bachanon
i was wondering how confederate soldiers related to dickens' london.

FilioScotia
Was that Confederate post some sort of recruiting station for reenactors? If not, they really should do that. What better place to sign people up than an event like that?People don't sign up just to be re-enactors, although I'm sure that is one of the group's activities. A good many of the people who "enlist" in this "brigade" are descended from men who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. I encountered this group when I went to DOS several years ago, and I've been thinking seriously about joining it because I have several ancestors who fought. I might get around to actually doing it one of these days.

I might get around to actually doing it one of these days.I've only ever done one of these kinds of events, a Rendevous outside of Raton, NM with a period encampment circa 1849. There, its a pretty simple matter to join in. You show up, pay dues, avoid the use of modern technology, shoot at things with black powder firearms, cannon, and mortars, and do a lot of campfire cooking. But its more for personal satisfaction than actually trying to reenact something as a show.I'm curious whether there are any groups in Texas that do something similar and that aren't excessively family-oriented. I'm not so interested in Civil War stuff, though. Something focused on the Texas Revolution or the Republic of Texas would be more to my liking, since that's where some interesting family history is on my end. Boris
Thx Eastend, but one of the reasons why I post these type of pics of events is to incourage more people to go. So, you should go next year, and if you have kids, take them for sure.

Thanks again Boris, your pictures are amazing. Looks as if a whole lot of folks had a good time. I always enjoyed going to Halloween parties so that I could play "dress up". plumber2
I friend of mine, a local Galveston Realtor, convinced me several years ago to volunteer to be one of those Beefeater guys. It was great fun being dressed up in the uniform. He did warn me that several of the guys that volunteered would be gay, but that all would be well. I was fine with all that, I even kind of became protective of the guys as we meandered around and had our pictures taken. Hell one of the guys convinced a St. Thomas bagpiper to show us what was under his kilts. We all got a laugh out of that. During the night parade, as we were escorting the royal carriage up Mechanic Street, someone from the crowd yelled out "Hail to Queen". The Beefeater in front of me turns around and says to me "I'm so popular". I fell in love with that guy right then and there......and I'm straight by golly. Don't worry, he sent me back home to my wife.
