Emirates Evaluating DFW Service

Recommended Posts

Emirates President Tim Clark in his reception speech to public officials, members of the media and special guests at JFK regarding the inaugural scheduled A380 flight to the US also hinted at possible US expansion cities.

"...Other U.S. cities are being evaluated for Emirates growing route network such as Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and Washington. "

Also, KLM's newly launched service to DFW is dropping. It started at daily service but will drop down to 5 times per week starting this fall.

However, Air France is dropping it's second daily flight from Houston to Paris. We've had 2 daily flights for over a year now but this might be the beginning of a reshuffling since Continental has announced it's leaving Skyteam of which Air France is a member. Look for Lufthansa to go double daily once Continental switches to Star Alliance.

International?

DFW: 2,220,035 Down 0.6% from 2007

IAH: 3,374,026, Up 7.3% from 2007

So, I was wrong in saying DFW's international traffic dropped by over 3%, because that was the airport's overall traffic dropping by over 3%.

The international traffic at IAH was up. How was the overall traffic?

Steering back on topic. The Great Circle Mapper tells us that DFW-DXB is about 6987nm. So, only a 777-LR will do. An A380 could work as well, but that's too much aircraft for this route.

EK has 6 7LR on order and at least 4 of them will be needed for their new SFO and LAX routes. So until EK orders some more 7LR aircraft, DFW is still at least a couple of years away from EK service IMO.

Good, Air France is terrible. They always lose my luggage.

Good old "Air Chance". I had to fly them a lot when I lived in Africa. Mediocre airline with mediocre service, unless you like rude flight atendants telling you to get your own drink, that they are too busy to get you a drink, and smoking in th egalley in the no smoking section (in the days before smoking disappeared from most flights). And, to top it all off, you have to go through Charles de Gaulle airport, possibly the worst airport in the free world. Definitely worse than Moscow, which isn't a great place either.

Virgin America to launch service to Dallas-Fort Worth

Virgin America , the fledging airline that has taken on the major airlines on transcontinental routes, will make its first midcontinent stop at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

The California carrier announced Tuesday that it will launch service to Dallas/Fort Worth from Los Angeles and San Francisco in early December.

Virgin America president and chief executive officer David Cush acknowledged that his airline will face stiff competition from D/FW Airport’s largest carrier, American Airlines Inc. But it’s a fight that he thinks Virgin America can win.

“Sooner or later, we’re going to have to start going into fortress hubs. We know that. With the strong economy in North Texas, with the very accommodating position of D/FW Airport and their willingness to meet our needs, it just seemed like a logical place to go,” Cush said.

Virgin America’s weapons will be better onboard amenities and service and lower costs, he said.

I flew on VirginA-merica from BOS to SFO a few months ago. It was nifty. Houston isn't cool enough to get VirginA-merica here because we aren't hip. We also don't have a Ritz. We lack a W too. Guess we'll just have to live with our no-frills airlines like Singapore, Emirates, and Qatar.

Oh, and back on topic, Emirates must not have liked what they saw at DFW.

Instead of starting new service to DFW, Emirates will be adding a SECOND daily non-stop to Houston later this fall.

So, we'll get TWO 777s from Emirates and DFW will get some narrow body airbuses to California.

Qantas is starting DFW-Sydney service in May:

http://www.smh.com.au/travel/travel-news/qantas-dumps-san-francisco-route-adds-dallas-20110114-19qfr.html

Qantas said today it would begin direct flights to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on May 16, after ending flights to San Francisco on May 14.

The Dallas/Fort Worth service would provide Qantas with access to American Airlines regional network, meaning it could offer codeshare services to another 13 destinations in the US and three in Mexico.

Qantas said it would operate four times a week direct from Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth starting May 16, using a three-class Boeing 747.

The return leg will fly through Brisbane.

Strange that Qantas would drop SFO, unless it's consolidating at LAX, or something. People on the west coast don't seem to mind running down the coast to connect through Los Angeles on trans-Pacific flights. But if you told a New Yorker they had to connect in Atlanta to get to Europe, they'd scream bloody murder. Maybe because the west coast shuttle runs (LAX, SFO, PDX, SEA on Alaska and Virgin mostly) go farther than the east coast shuttles do (BOS, LGA/EWR, DCA on Delta, US Airways, and Amtrak).

This mostly has to do with Qantas being in the same airline alliance as American Airlines which will serve as a feeder route into the Qantas flight because of the AA hub at DFW.

Anyways SFO already has Air New Zealand which provides alot of competition for connecting from North America to that part of the world (which along with United having a hub there is also feeding passengers onto that airline).

On second thought...

Emirates adds Dallas-FT Worth, takes one flight from Houston
