ricco67 Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 They just received a $2mil grant for a "feasibility" study on future expansion on the airport for possible use as a support center in the avionics industry. While initially they are talking about buying out the prison and surrounding areas, I find it interesting that they are doing this just as SL residence are finally getting some "peace and quiet" from the new railroad improvements that were passed only just recently. Once this airport gets the nod (backed by Congressman ® Lampson), I'm sure things will move on relatively quickly. I imagine this will pretty much squash any hopes that pearland's hopes of expansion (as discussed here). 1 Quote

This would clear the way for the city's acquisition of more than 300 acres of prison property for the development of aviation-related businesses and a second business park. The initiative was paved with the passage of Senate Bill 909 in the 2007 legislative session, allowing a feasibility study on moving the unit. 1 Quote

The taxiway and hangar project costs $40.9 million. Work on the hangar portion of the project began in January 2021, and a ribbon-cutting for the new hangar will be held in April, said Elizabeth Rosenbaum, director of aviation at the Sugar Land Regional Airport. “The hangar is going to be something really exciting—something you don’t see a hangar usually look like,” she said. “It emulates our terminal building; it’s going to stand out and be a beautiful facility.” The parallel taxiway project, which has been in the works for more than 10 years, was split into four phases. Construction on the fourth and final phase will wrap up in spring 2024, Rosenbaum said." 2 Quote
