I just found an excellent website called "texhwyman.com." Most of you probably already know about it. Maybe the person who created it is on this forum. He did a good job of explaining highways, interstates, signs, etc.

I was a highway man...

Along the coach roads I did ride...

With sword and pistol by my side...

Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade...

Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade...

The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five...

But I am still alive...

What are "baubles?"

I started to make fun of that, but I couldn't make the joke work.

In olden times, a bauble was a tool of a court jester, usually a hideous face with a mardi gras hat and bells on one end of a rod, and sometimes with a bladder on the other end. The real artifacts look like voodoo tools. Within the last couple centuries, it simply refers to jewelry or sometimes christmas ornaments.

I found another good website called "okroads.com." I looked at the photos of the entire 143-mile stretch of IH-37 from Corpus Christi to San Antonio. It has many other freeways and highways, too.

Ummmm....I just showed you a picture of a "bauble". I got that picture off the INTERNET, by typing in the words "Mardi Gras Baubles" in an IMAGE search from Yahoo, or you can choose which ever search engine you prefer.

I don't think the Highwaymen were referring to Mardi Gras trinkets.

No, most likely they are referring to the pearl necklaces the ladies wore around their necks during the time.
