Workers spend too much time being unproductive, survey says

http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...63&ana=e_du

Workers in the United States are unproductive about 70 days a year, or 29 percent of the time they are at work, according to Proudfoot Consulting's 2007 Annual Global Productivity Report.

Globally, the report said German workers waste 28.5 percent of their work time, or 55 days a year, while French workers are unproductive about 36 percent of time, or 73 days a year.

The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based consulting company said the leading cause of unproductive time globally is poor supervision -- responsible for 31 percent of the wasted time -- followed by poor management planning/control of work (30.2 percent) and poor communication (18.2 percent).

Of course, not all time NOT working is wasted. I remember learning that a little bit of socializing is actually healthy for the work environment.

What is your standard of wasting time at work?

What is your standard of wasting time at work?

Ha. My time is only wasted by inefficient colleagues and blowhard execs. I'm not wasting, I'm multi-tasking.

No, really. I HAIF when I'm on conference calls not directly related to my projects, and when I'm eating lunch at my desk. So really, it's a value-add: since my time is wasted already on calls I don't need to be on, (but have been directly ordered to do so) I remain more alert, or at least awake, by staying mentally busy reading HAIF.

My answews aren't in the poll:

Q. How much time do you "waste" not working?

A. Less than 10%.

Q. How much time do you waste on HAIF?

A. Time spent on HAIF is never wasted.

LOL. Good answers.

Well, since my Pocket PC bit the big one, I can't puruse this place as often as I'd like.

now I have to figure out if I want to buy a new Pocket PC (IPAQ) or go for something a bit bigger.

Do iPhones do HAIF? They should ... no? I am writing this on Safari and it seems to be working well on my Powerbook, but does it work on the iPhones?

Oh, Iphone does HAIF quite well, I'm just not quite that ready to drink that cool aid. I WANT an IPhone, but I don't know if I want cingular's plan for it.

I've also been of the "Don't have every device in one" school. I'm looking at the Nokia 800, instead of an IPAQ though.

People need to keep in mind that companies can easily monitor employees computer use. Even more vigilant in a corporate setting. We would get reminders quite often and at meetings.

Best way to avoid temptation is not "subscribing" to each topic. You wont get those emails that someone has responded to a certain topic. I unsubscribed to quite a bunch just to avoid the over abundance of notifications.

Another good way to avoid overkill is by trying to keep within a topic you have more interest. I personally like Historical Houston. In fact thats how I happended upon Haif. For the shear and only interest in Houston History. It is easy to stray of course.

I say the most wasted time on haif is talking about news. Most of that you can just read on chron, etc.

Wasting time at work could also mean a number of things other than on the computer. I have some coworkers that use copy machine and faxes for personal endeavors. Some play online games (big waste of time). So not to just blame Haif, sorry. Then there are your coworkers that go outside to smoke and go too often. Long personal phone calls at work are also a problem. Peace! :)
