PapillionWyngs
The we are "probably" scaling down is definite. Sitting at keybord crying. Could use some helpful relocation suggestions close to Clear Lake because as of now the boys still go to private school. We should be able to pay abou $130 without a mortgage, and could afford a small mortgage. Looking for 3 bedrooms (can't be split plan because of our bi-polar child, w utility room inside, and a HUGE family room.I know.Dream on. Howard
Sorry to hear it. I was in the same boat. Great house, new car, city view, great pay. Four months after Sep 11 the rug got pulled out. I went home and sat on the edge of my bed with my head in my hands. WOW did that just happen? Then I started thinking about bills and went to file unemployment. $250.00 a week (oops) was better than nothing but didnt even cover my mortgage. I got on line and started looking for a job the next day. Then off to the work center. I moved in with some freinds and ended up being a GM personal trainer which I did part time just to help people before. I hated it as the GM but I had to survive. I was a jet fuel manager before. I have been in Afghanistan 3 years now as a result. Great pay and I get to see the world on vacation.Word of advice. Get motivated and dont sulk for more than a day. Good things will come but they dont come looking for you. You have to get out there and find it... Good Luck! TexasArchitect
sorry to see the news i too got laid off, but that happened after 9-11. i worked at an architecture firm that only does high rise so u can see how business got hindered. ppl were holding off construction or just plain scared to build high rises. anyway, i'm not sure what field you're in, but thankfully the job market right now seems pretty good in Houston plus you never know everything happens for a reason and maybe you'll have something better come up

Vertigo58
I'll do what I can to help you. Went through the same thing. I'm hoping you will get some kind of compensation $ from that company in the interum. I kept my chin up and did better since I was given a great package, etc. Send me a PM and I will do what I can. Serious. The real irony is I worked (temp) helping others find jobs in the same situation. There are many "tools" and support far more than we imagine. I bounced back in no time took a while but I cant even begin to explain how much better I am now. It will get better I promise you.

Mr. Chenevert
Been there in late 2001. I was lucky, no wife, no kids. Unemployment paid for the apartment. However, it made me do things differently when I found a new job.I immediately went to work saving up 6 months worth of living expenses and put it in an account that I refuse to touch. Not even when I bought my first house did I let myself touch that money. I hope it never happens again, but at least my stress level will be lower if it happens again.Don't panic. You will find work again. Hopefully you have some savings to buy yourself some time.

TheNiche
Funny thing about lay-offs when the economy is otherwise doing very well...sometimes people have been in the same job for so long that they lose sight of the opportunities that have opened up for them elsewhere. And because you got laid off (as opposed to fired), you can use your former employer as a good reference. This experience could turn out to be a huge blessing in disguise. Best of luck! Houston1stWordOnTheMoon
If you are looking for some cash in the mean time, my in laws are visiting from Ethiopia. You can be thier tour guide, i will pay cash. If you speak arabic, thats a plus. If not, just speak english very slowly so they can understand you. Take them to several different grocery stores and just let them go! They are ABSOLUTELY FASCINATED with the volume and variety in American grocery stores. They literally walk around them for hours. Who the hell says Houston isnt a place for tourist? I hope this has brought a smile to your face in your time of disappointment
houstonmacbro
go to unemployment ASAP. it is a process that you won't enjoy but must be done. When I was laid off in 2004 I NEVER set foot in an office. Is it different here in Texas? That was in MD.last yr, several people i know said i was eligible so i'd thought i try. i think of because of where i fell on the pay scale, when i tried via the net it said i couldn't do it that way. there was also a phone system that you could call but there was also some reason why it didn't work and they would only pay you in cycles of 2 weeks and you had to time it perfectly. to be honest, i don't remember anything about the whole process except that it was frustrating to those who aren't familiar with it. If you could just inform us of what you are proficient in, perhaps we could guide you in the right direction.Well, you know who I worked for, in marketing. Most of my experience is in the hhospitality field, witha 4 year stint as a certified (still am) Paralegal. My problem is that I have to have something tha tI can do at home full time orr something part time away from home - bue we are finding out that my bi-polar needs child has a low IQ and there may be some other leaning different things going on with him.Anyway - just your prayers, threads and support will do.JUST SOMEONE TELL MY HUSBAND THAT WE DON'T NEED TO RENT WHEN WE SELL THIS HOUSE - WE NEED TO TAKE THE EQUITY AND BUY A SMALLER HOUSE! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TheNiche
JUST SOMEONE TELL MY HUSBAND THAT WE DON'T NEED TO RENT WHEN WE SELL THIS HOUSE - WE NEED TO TAKE THE EQUITY AND BUY A SMALLER HOUSE! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!We can't do that because I don't know anything about your financial situation. There are circumstances in which renting may be the appropriate response, but it depends greatly on your ability/inability to cover your expenses for the next several months by issuing debt, dipping into savings, or by liquidating other investments. You should remember that buying and selling houses costs a fair bit of money in the form of closing costs. And it may not be advantageous for you to try and sell out of desperation. It could take between a month and three months before you'd be able to take money out of your home at market price anyways, by which time you may very well have a better-paying job...and if you need the money quick, then you may end up with a lower sale price than you want. Meanwhile, the effort involved in relocating your family would likely distract you from trying to find a job. And then when the crisis was resolved, if you wanted to move back into a larger home, you'd have to do it all over again, paying out even more money and taking that much more of your time. This is one of the few times where credit cards may be a viable debt instrument to hold you over in your current place of residence for the short term.Of course, if you were planning to downsize or to try and economize anyway, now is an excellent time to reorganize your lifestyle. A break from working for someone else can be an opportunity to work for yourself by reducing your living expenses.BOTTOM LINE: 3.8% unemployment rate. You've got work experience, good employer references, and certifications. You'll find a job. Don't let short-term stressors cloud long-term judgement.
