  1. Thanks a lot for your input. :) I'd heard conflicting things about Tricon and Allegro; a friend bought from Bastien (?) and had a typical building experience. I'm interested in excellent construction, but I don't know very much about construction, and my occupation makes it difficult for me to look over the contractor's and crew's shoulders to make sure that the things I can identify are getting done well...

  2. I'm moving to Houston; a good friend of mine bought a home by Sterling Victorian Homes in the Heights in the 1990's and love it. It's really well-built and has nice architectural details. I was searching the internet for details about Sterling and heard it was defunct? Does anyone know if this is the case? Do you know where else in the Heights Sterling might have built?

I've been looking for other new victorian homes in the Heights - I've seen a lot of victorian-style homes that look poorly built and some that look nice (Lindsey Custom (?)). Do you know anything about any other good builders in the area? I'm scared of buying something that might have serious problems in a year or two.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for any info!

  3. My husband just started work in Houston, so I'm starting to look for work now. Currently, I'm clerking for the Chief Justice of the Austin Court of Appeals and my 1 year term will be up at the end of August.

    So here's my shameless self-promotion:

I graduated from UT, JD with honors, in 2004, and have passed the TX bar exam. I've got undergrad degrees in Finance and Biology, with honors, from UT. I've also got 3 years of client service experience under my belt in the Houston office of a Big Four accounting firm doing valuation, financial modeling, and forensic accounting work, so I'm very comfortable with crazy work schedules, different personality types, demanding clients, and working with numbers.

I'm interested in transactional work, either in a firm or in-house. Opportunity permitting, I'm especially interested in working with biotech, pharmaceutical or energy companies (I'm a bio science geek at heart - and have passed the patent bar), or French companies (I'm French, fluent, and have dual US-French citizenship).

I'm interested in practicing "business" law, meaning I'd like to help companies with their business-related legal needs. Real estate, contracts, and other business-related legal work really appeal to me.

Feel free to drop me a line if you are looking for someone like me or know of a good opening. aeonflux10 at gmail.com

  4. Thank you all for the info! Do you all know more specifically which parts of Timbergrove flooded besides near the bayou? Streets I can find on the key map? We are trying to figure out if some of the houses we are interested in on HAR.com have flooded. Some say they didn't and some don't say...

  5. Sorry for the second post - my hubby and I live in Austin but are moving here for work. We are interested in buying in these neighborhoods. I know it's not the Heights, but it seems like there are some regular posters around who have lived in the area long enough to give us an idea.

What do you think about these neighborhoods? Are they on their way up? Down? We liked that it was inner loop, decent lot size, potential for us to work on an older house, and cohesive "neighborhood" feel. There are a lot of older residents, and some commercial and multifamily housing nearby. Also, I think parts flooded? What should we be worried about?

Thanks so much for your advice!

  6. Hi!

My husband and I just got married and are looking to buy our first house. We don't have a lot of $$, so we are looking to buy an older house that could use some work and TLC, instead.

We are thinking about buying a modest 2/1 and eventually making the house a little roomier - maybe a 3/2. My hubby and I are looking at homes built 1950s+, and are trying to be mindful of keeping our improvements in the spirit of the architecture of the home and the neighborhood.

We are just trying to get an idea of how much it would eventually cost us to go from 2/1 (about 1500 or so sq ft) to a 3/2 (about 2000-2200 sq ft), assuming we eventually update the 1 bathroom, build a new master bath and bedroom, and we work on the kitchen.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks!!
