  1. I know this reply is a little late after the fact...

Richs has been putting on a great Friday night for about 6 weeks now. No cover before 11 and $1 wells all night. Not too packed, and great music.

Its a good place if you want to listen to synthpop and industrial. If you are looking to re-live Dexys Midnight Runners or Toni Basil, then you might not want to stop in.

Friday nights at #'s is still pretty good music-wise, but I will have to agree with Montrose1100. Its smoky, the bathrooms are a biohazard, and there are always drunken little hipsters knocking your drink around and smashing into you on the dancefloor. Underworld nights are way better though. There aren't as many people, you have a choice of music (80's main floor, horrorpunk/death rock upstairs) and the bathrooms seem to stay cleaner.

    Your mileage may vary though...

    (PS: whomever mentioned Red Square...muah!)

  2. Hehe...love me some Apoptygma Berserk. Had to travel to Austin to see them and VNV Nation play together. Great show, just wish it could have been local.

Anywho MidtownCoog...Rockpile moved a couple of years ago to a little house on Westheimer. I guess they got too big for their britches cause they closed about a year after they opened that location.

  3. Geesh...Timeless Taffeta. That was where I got my first pair of Docs and the only place that I was allowed to go at 16 that had knee high victorian boots :)

I never got a chance to go to Sound Exchange when it was on Westheimer, but I did go to Rockpile alot. It was the only place that I could indulge my hardcore punk rock side and my synth pop/rivethead side in one convienient shopping trip.

I loved that Dare Wear was next door too, but Martin (the owner) was losing wayyyyy too much money on that location due to a skeevy employee.

Does anyone remember a little store on Richmond called Sanctuary? It was a neat little store that sold like Manic Panic makeup and anhk necklaces. It was like the one stop goth shop. But the folks who owned it, from what i've heard, made sure that Apoptygma Berserk never plays in Houston again. I think they closed like 6 or 7 years ago or some such.

  4. Mmmm....food threads....

Anywho, there was a Wyatts on W. 34th and Ella. My mom and uncle both worked there for a while.

Piccadilly Cafeteria was in Northwest Mall for a while but closed shop about 5 years ago I think. The one in Northline Mall survived for a little while after but has now gone.

As it stands there are only 2 Pancho Mexican Buffets left in Houston (one on 45 north and one at Jones and 1960).

My grandma worked at the Princes on 14th (?) and Shepard. I think one of the old staff pics of her hangs in either the I-10 or 59 Princes. She is wearing this really neat-o space suit thing. And was making 35 cents an hour :)

I want to say there was a Ruby Tuesday in Northwest Mall too, right across from the old Picadilly Cafeteria. Then again, I think I was 4 when the restaurant in question closed down.

And yeah, Champs rocked. The one that was on 290 and Bingle is now a Bravos Mexican Restaurant. And there isn't a train, but you can still see the tracks and tunnels.

Anyone remember Dirtys? There was one on Durham where Cyclone Anyas is now located and there was one on Chimney Rock too. From what I recall, it was pretty good and I could draw on the walls without my mom getting all poofy.

There was a Woolworths Grill thing in Northwest Mall too, my uncle worked there for a while too.

Lets see, there is a Charlies Hamburgers on W. Gray in the River Oaks Plaza. moo. I've had better hamburgers.

I remember the day that Lukes burnt down. We were going down Westheimer and it was flooding something fierce and traffic was all kinds of backed up. And there is was, blazing away.

  5. Lets see...I love Houston because:

    - EZ-7 (skate place over by White Oak bayou)

    - being able to ride my bike down the bayou from Candlelight to the Heights

    - River Oaks

    - Montrose and Westheimer

    - walking down West Gray to work and seeing Downtown looming in the distance

    - crazy folks to talk to at the bus stop

    - Numbers nightclub

    - the sweaty crazy energy at Fitz when a punk band plays

    - the fact that we have 2 Starbucks right across the street from one another

    - u-buy we-frys over in 3rd Ward

    - art car parade

    - Pride parade

    - the old Westheimer Street Fest

    - the record stores (Cactus, Black Dog,etc. R.I.P Rockpile *sniff*)

    - going from the Inner Loop to Spring Branch and seeing the styles change like 5 different times

    - Mecom Fountian

    - Glenwood and Washington cemetaries

    - leaving a bar downtown, taking either 45 or 10 home and looking back and seeing Downtown go byebye

    Sigh...I love Houston

  6. Hey guys...

First off I want to tell you that this isn't spam :D

I just wanted to tell everyone that I found this really great club downtown on Congress that is about a billion times better than Numbers.

The club itself is called Blu Torch, next to La Carafe on Congress and they have a night every Thursday called Red Square. The music is synth-pop/industrial such as Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Front 242, VNV Nation and all that.

The vibe was very casual and laid-back, not a fashion show at all. Everyone was really nice and me being a new-comer to the scene they were really nice. Try finding someone at Numbers who will give you the time of day!

The drinks are cheap, its not crowded, and its air-conditioned.

    Please go! Its great!
