  2. In 2009, the area in Houston's East End known as Magnolia Park or Magnolia, as we know it today, will complete 100 years of existence when it was declared a municipality in 1909. I have heard that there are celebrations in the works to honor the centennial. It has been suggested that Magnolia Park receive a Texas historical marker to honor the community.

I am a member of the Harris County Historical Commission which oversees the county's historical marker program. I have completed historical marker projects for a few subjects including the historic Harrisburg-Jackson cemetery located off of Bowie St. and Lawndale St. near Milby High School.

Born and raised in Magnolia, it would be my honor to mentor a private effort to get the community a historical marker. Are there any interested groups willing to sponsor this project?

The effort to get a marker should begin soon so that it can be unveiled for the centennial celebration.

As I think of the marker, I wonder where it should be installed in the community? Perhaps it can stand as Magnolia Park's original City Hall at Avenue F and 73rd St. Or maybe it can stand in one the area's City parks or at one of the community's entrances.

  3. I wonder where the improvements will be made. Maybe they can get those train tracks out of the area. Or maybe even spruce up Harrisburg plaza a little more. Or you know what? Demolish that little check cashing place at the intersection of Wayside, Macario Garcia, and Polk. Put a nice arch, statue, obelisk, a column, or some kind of icon there. Something that would stand out and let visitors know they are now in da Greater East End.

There is talk of the 75 st. light rail from Harrisburg tran.center to gulfgateTran. center to Hobby Air port

  5. The church is a former movie theater. I remember passing by it on our way home from visiting family in that area. I was really little but I do remember around the mid to late 70s it being an X rated movie theater (didn't know what that meant then). I remember asking my dad if we could go see a movie there and he told me no because the movies there were dirty. First thing that came to mind was that there was probably alot of naked people in those movies. Which raised my curiosity even more...... smile.gif

The Avalon theater is gone as of 9-15-2009 Just a open lot of 1.5 Acr. for sale $1.5 mil

  7. Does anyone remember the old ice houses that used to dot the east end? I remember one on Canal and 67th across from Richeys grocery store, and another on Harrisburg right by the railroad tracks and yet another on Navagation close to Wayside. They actually had bar stools outside on the sidewalk pulled up to a bar.

  9. I was reading in this one book about McDonald's and there was a paragraph about how McDonald's couldn't use the McDonald's name until they acquired the name from a local drive-in called McDonald's.

Does anyone remember those times/care to elaborate?

(sorry the intro is so short, I'm kind of on a deadline)
