  1. This topic brings back a LOT of memories.

I have a question which may relate to Globe, Woolco, Gemco, Sage, etc. Does anyone recall either a cheap product line sold by one of these stores, or a store named: "Bright Yellow Wrap"? Seems as though we used to see that name at one of the stores which used to occupy the space at Bellaire Blvd. and Hillcroft, where the Fiesta is currently.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Remember when you used to be able to buy guns and knives at Foley's?

I can't pinpoint when they got rid of the sporting goods, but I'd guess it was sometime in the 1980s.

I sure do. Bought a Sheridan pump-style pellet rifle from the downtown Foley's back in the 70's.

  3. Great thread, DJ.

Late to this party, but FWIW AJ Foyt Chevrolet actually had three different names through the years:

It was first MacRoberts Chevrolet, then AJ Foyt bought it, and lastly is was called Tex Star Chevrolet. Tex Star didn't last very long though, the economy went bust.

  4. The Richmond strip became the Barrio Strip, combined with the "invention" of Downtown (not midtown), which now is off limits to caucasians.

The early "movement" away from the Richmond Strip was towards the Shephard/Greenbriar area (Club 8.0s, etc). There were several places around that area for awhile.... then.... DOWNTOWN... wow that really lasted long. Last time I went downtown, to a company part about 4 years ago, I thought I was transported to Shanghai. Anyways.... now.... it's Midtown and Washington. It goes from The Place to Be, to The Hood and Barrio, back to The Place to Be. That is Houston. I thought Downtown is mostly restaurants and less clubs now.... are all the clubs for idiots still down lower Main St. area, etc.? No clue.. too old for that now.

Before Kingfish Market, it was Tony Roma's. No better baby back ribs have ever seen the light of day in Texas, to this day. I perused that strip from the days of Club 6400 to Fizz to the Yucatan Liquor Stand to Cooters. Up until the "club scene" was ruined permanently with the stupidity of allowing 18 year olds into nightclubs with wristbands, which led to the obnoxious "after hour" bars that opened at 2:00 a.m. and were nothing but Xtasy Factories. I even remember when the law was changed for awhilie and clubs had to close at Midnight (yes, there was a time when 12:00 am was closing time, by law). The Richmond Strip way before Billy Blues, Polly Esther's, City Streets and all the other crap came along. Before Barry's Pizza moved from where Chipotle is now at Richmond/Sage to where it is now at Richmond/Fountainview. And I was there too after the Rockets' Championship. The Strip started decaying soon after that. We will only have memories of that area, no different than memories of all other places that go the way of society.

Oh.. forgot.... let me add when the best "club" of all was in it's hey day - Rick's Cabaret, in the 80s.

Damn.... how old we get. Only thing I wish is that we had cell phones with cameras. Hell, I wish we just had digital cameras back then. Think about it..... we have those memories.... but..... when alzheimer's and dementia set in..... other generations will at least have some pictures and video to "jog" a memory for 30 seconds or so..... my generation won't have crap.

Long live... um... wait.. what was the topic?

Couldn't have said it any better myself!

BTW, MY fave hangout / dance club back in that time was R & R. Not on Richmond of course, but close.

    Ah, the memories . . .

  5. Wow! This thread brought back a ton of memories!

Someone asked about Bert Wheeler's- isn't the one by Broiler Burger on Bellaire still there? Haven't been by there recently.

Nope - it shut down a few years back.

A check cashing business occupies that ol' place now.

  6. I believe it was an Academy store after A&P before it became an HEB or was that next door?

I wasn't aware that the present day HEB location had ever been an A&P, but yes - prior to HEB it was indeed an Academy store.

My auto repair shop is located at 5118 Spruce St., almost directly behind HEB, next door to the O'Reilly Auto Parts (formerly Charlie's Hi-Lo).

We moved our business to this location in December of 1990, and until they closed up I'd walk over to Academy on my lunch break just to window shop. Bought my work shoes there for years . . .

Lots of changes around our area of Bellaire in the 20 years we've been here!

  7. I wonder if Raymond Pearson Ford was designed by the same person who designed the old Park Place Mercedes in Dallas? I use to work at P.P. and saw some old photos of it when it was a Pontiac dealer. Looks just alike.

    That's a great question, and I wish that I had an answer . . .

I'd imagine that there were but a few architectural firms designing dealerships back in the day, so I suppose that it's quite possible.

Do you have any recollection of the dealership name when it was a Pontiac dealership?

  8. I had a girlfriend who graduated from Davis High in 1963, got a job at Stelzigs downtown and immediately bought a brand new '63 Impala Super Sport. Black with red interior. It was a beauty. She worked at Stelzigs all her life, retired from there, not downtown though. Think they moved near 610 and Richmond.

Sorry that I'm "so late to this party", but H. Leo Stelzig Jr., one of his sons (C.C.) and one of his daughters (Francis) are all our customers here at my auto repair business.

I'm known the family since the early 70's, when C.C. and myself were high school age.

Anyway, what was your girlfriend's name?

    TIA!

    Westbury Square

    (1960) William W. Wortham, Jr.

developer: Ira Berne (also developed Westbury Subdivision)

Stephen Fox (AIA Architectural Gd.) mentions "shoddy design standards" and "confusing layout" as possible causes of slow revitalization.

Here is a block book layout of the design. I love that fountain, sad what happened to it, surprised it is still even there.

    Thanks everyone for those pics.

Never heard a strip called a "centerette" before, looks very similar to the 1950's strips in my old neighborhood. Those colored tiles are always nice. Reminds me of the Utotems.

Mucho thanks for posting that survey jpg!

If you blow that survey up so you can read the lower RH corner, you can see the engineer's info and signatures.

Bennett Coulson, who passed away December 2003, is my father.

I recall that he spoke VERY highly of Ira Berne. Ira thought so much of my Dad that he paid for central A/C to be installed in my parent's first home (on Durness Way, in Braes Heights) in the mid-50's!

    Ah . . . the memories!

  10. I can't seem to be able to enlarge the photo. When I click on it, the screen just goes to black.

I know that Gone With The Wind was also playing at Memorial City in the fall of 1971.

Same here with that photo . . . hmmmm, I dunno how to "fix" that.

If anyone here would like a better, cleaner, larger copy of that pic, send me an e-mail to bell-auto <at> comcast.net and I'll reply back with the file.

Really interesting to me is the fighter aircraft near the Goodyear store, sure would like to find out more about why it was on display @ MCM back in the fall of '74.

I'll bet it was a b!tch to get it trucked in there, LOL!

I've "googled" about that fighter 'til my fingers were just about worn out, with no success.

  11. Here's an old pic of the Katy Freeway frontage of MCM. I have determined that this photo was snapped between September 18 and October 26, 1974.

"Gone With The Wind" was re-released in Houston on September 18, 1974, and on the MCM marquee there is an art show through October 26.

Enlarge the photo and take special note of the U.S.A.F. fighter aircraft parked in the East lot, between the mall and the Goodyear tire store. Wassup with that?

  12. Bringing an old topic back to the top . . .

Here are a few old photos from the 80's at Houston International. Though these pics show all brands of older cars, these were shot during one of our semi-annual Gulf Coast Trans Am Club drag races.

My car this day was the Bucaneer Red 1975 Trans Am.

My buddies and I raced our street cars there from the early 70's through whenever the track shut down. Ah - the memories . . . and the haircuts and clothes, LOL!

  13. Newbie here, my first post . . .

Give Greatwood another look-see. I have a daughter in 2nd grade, and the new LCISD middle school, junior high and high school campus near the George Ranch will be up and running by the time she leaves elementary school.

She is attending Campbell Elementary School (one of the two elementary schools in Greatwood), and loves it. She's doing great, and her teachers so far have been top-notch.

My (now ex-) wife and I moved to Greatwood in 2000, two weeks before our daughter was born. Excepting the traffic woes while 59 was under construction, we have genuinely enjoyed living in Greatwood. I work in Bellaire (21 mile commute each way), and since the 59 completion my commute is usually a breeze.

The real improvement came with the commercial developments along 59 an 99. It's nice to have a Memorial Hermann hospital so close as well. Sugar Land put in our own Fire Station and Ambulance a few years back as well.

The amenities in Greatwood are fantastic - three pools, LOTS of playgrounds for the kiddos, nice landscaping and maintenance, a decent HOA board, etc. Also, at a tick over $600, the annual HOA dues are reasonable. If you like to fish, there are several very nice lakes with some good sized fish too. Catch and release only, though.

I'm fairly certain that you can find a 3000+ sq. ft. home that fits your needs, with an oversized garage, and stay within your budget. During the 15+ years that homes were being built in Greatwood, there were numerous reputable builders.

Try it - you'll like it.

    Good luck!
