  1. Yesterday I noticed a sign posted on the door of the space next to the Washington Mutual (Washington & Shepherd). It indicated that an alcohol permit application has been filed by Molina's Cantina.

I also found this while surfing: http://myspace.com/seditionbooks

"Sedition Books is an infoshop located at 4420 Washington Avenue, Houston Texas, 77007. We will be open beginning Sunday, February 12th." I'm not sure what this is exactly, but it sounds interesting... Has anyone checked this out?

Some more information about the next tapas and wine place:

Charles Clark and Grant Cooper, owners of Ibiza Food & Wine Bar, are teaming up with Chef Chris Shepherd, formerly of Brennan's, and Antonio Gianola, formerly of Da Marco, to open Catalan Food & Wine Bar. Shepherd will serve as partner and chef while Gianola will be the managing partner. Catalan, located at 5555 Washington Avenue at T.C. Jester, will open mid-summer 2006. The restaurant will serve Spanish tapas with a contemporary flair in addition to larger lunch and dinner entrees.

I'm delighted about the Washington Ave development activity in general, but I'm really concerned about the concomitant parking issues (no valet parking, please!!!) I'll try to do my part and take the bus or walk.

Also, I really hope to see a larger variety of cuisines represented eventually. Other businesses would be great too... like Half Price Books, or a funky gift shop.

  2. I was a huge fan of Tutto Bene. Last week I was delighted to discover that the chef/owner Andrew Rebori has a new restaurant called Just Dinner, at 2100 Waugh (near Rudyard's). It shares space with "Just Lunch & Catering".

It's a small, lovely place where you can bring your own wine. The pasta dishes offered are some of the old favorites from Tutto Bene, and there are many interesting and varied non-pasta choices too. The menu also states "please feel free to ask for anything you would like to have for dinner. Most likely, I can accommodate you." What a treat!

  3. THey'll never know unless they try... With all the growth in RM, I think people would be happy to have a forum to discuss their neighborhood!

I'd love this! Since there are a bunch of neighborhoods all growing in this part of town, maybe the new forum could be broadly named, perhaps the "Washington Avenue Corridor", or "Memorial Park/Washington Avenue"?

    Happy Chinese New Year, all!

  4. Hi everyone,

This is my neighborhood. When we moved here a few years ago, we didn't know what to call it either, so I did some research...

It's officially called Magnolia Grove. Rice Military is to the west of us, and Memorial Heights to the east. There used to be a map of all the west end neighborhoods bordering Washington Avenue at www.theoldwestend.org but I haven't been able to access the site for a long time.

From the Magnolia Grove Civic Club website:

"Magnolia Grove is a small neighborhood located along Buffalo Bayou between downtown Houston and Memorial Park. The neighborhood is bounded by Memorial Drive, Shepherd Ave, Washington Ave, and Waugh Ave."
