I'm pretty sure it's most likely water that supplies HFD connections in the garage. It seemed for awhile they were planning on using the garage for parking. I know a couple years back they installed a cashier booth, new gate and repainted the interior of the garage.

Heck yes ! Post Em ! I've been inside the Sheraton but next the Texas State hotel.
-
They did the abatement floor by floor. The had each floor sealed up with the air that was being discharge running thru a filter. This happened about 3-4 years ago.
-
Ya I recently saw that. There's not anything inside to see anyways. It's has been completely gutted. They did asbestos abatement a few years back. You are also correct about the photos. They are now a few years old.

Maybe the demolition of the old building made entry to the new one easier?
Not at all !! It's now impossible. When they first demolished the old building there was a wall they knocked down that led inside to the main lobby of the newer hotel. Since then all that was bricked up I miss the Savoy Flats !!!!
-
Here is also some shots from the newer Hotel. I've been inside alot of vacant buildings downtown and The Savoy Flats building is by far in the worst condition. Battlesteins is still in decent condition. I know the 1st floor and basement was being converted into a club but was never finished. The upper floors are still intact for the most part.
Old TV that still works and includes AM/FM radio
The Savoy Kitchen
The Front Desk
Conference Room
2nd floor hallway
Looking thru a connecting doorway in the newer building
Some of the misc squatters artwork

Here is some inside shots of the Savoy Flats building. Figured I'd share 'em now since it's soon to be gone forever !!!
1. A shot of the Austin Room on the Second floor that connects the older building to the hotel.
2. Second floor area , not to sure what is was originally.
3. Second floor hallway.
4. Second floor room , on the opposite side of the wall is where all the floors collapsed.
5. All the rubble from the collapse.
6. Third floor stairway entrance
7. Third floor hallway
8. Third floor room
9.Fourth floor room next to collapse.
10. Stairs going up to the 5th floor.
11. Shot looking down from the roof.
12. On the roof .

Awesome !!!! Thanks , the swampalot site even has the drawing of what that land surrounding it was intended for !!

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the church that has geodesic domes on the roof that is located in Alief. I know it has been vacant for some years now. Any info would be greatly appreciated !
-
I searched and couldn't find much on Battlesteins Downtown . I know it was supposed to of been Houston's busiest department store but was wondering when and why it closed. I noticed it looks like a club was inside at one time on the lower levels . Any info would be greatly appreciated !!!

Wow the pics are really depressing!
Its like seeing images of Titanic before & after.
I was in one of those small rooms for a meeting about a year ago maybe? it faced the bayou but the room was so uncomfortable since the air conditioning was going bad, the antique red carpet had a foul odor and the elevators were very slow. Each room was very dated like being in 1965. Most had small bars for after meeting cocktails.
I have pics from a family wedding and many of a non profit annual gala as recent as 2007. This place was always so alive its just unimaginable to see the outcome. That huge chandelier in the center of the ballroom was killer. Wonder who in the heck got it?
That stage was so grand! It was so neat to stand on it facing the crowds.
Will post the very colorful images very soon.
I think they had a auction when they closed it . Alot of the stuff inside had auction tags and most of the cool fixtures and furniture are gone .
-
Did they used to have animals in the Circus they regularly had ? Just wondering because the building is so huge . Has a lot of separate rooms , each room was decorated different and some had themes. The stage area that is completely black has really cool walkways leading to the stagelights and attic area . The main ballroom area is gigantic !! A bunch of kids have vandalized alot of the interior. And there is some very creepy looking clowns painted on the wall upstairs !! I'd hate to see it go . Hopefully it will continue to sit and rot
-
How difficult is entry?
Too difficult ! It's on lock down. Only ninja's can gain access
-
Ooooh....can I bounce in the bouncy room too? secretsquirrel's gonna have to give me a tour...
Looks really clean in there for a building that's been abandoned for >20 years.
The inside is great shape compared to other buildings I've been in .
-
I still like the studio idea, but second if that doesn't go through, how about turning it into Houston's central transit station? I think the Compaq Center would have been good for that.
The movie studio would be a great way to keep a part of Houston's history alive. I wish I could have hit up Astro world before it's demise. A restaurant on Hwy 6 still has The Penguin's duck mobile from the Batman ride out in front
