  1. I recall it well. I lived in the same neighborhood. Wife and we're headed out to see damage from alicia a hurricane which came through the day before. We pulled onto memorial and saw a helicopter parked on memorial and the victim bodies being loaded. I had come home an hour or so earlier and drove right by the realtor offices and saw nothing. Haunts me to this day. The murder was execution style and killed three realtors two from the Fleetwood neighborhood.

  2. We ate at Ra a couple of weeks ago, right after they opened and plan on going again this week for happy hour. They've done a nice job and are building a huge patio out back. The area in front of the Hotel Sorella looks nice, too!

We ate at Pronto in City Centre and found it very good, a nice reasonably priced place. Also Studio Movie Grill here is very good. Cant wait for Brio and others to complete and open. The Fire and Water landscape in front of the new hotel Sorella I believe is very nice also. This area is going to be awesome if it can deliver on its plan concepts in this tough market.

  3. Beef and Bird

I miss this restaurant on Wilcrest. It was formal and had an east coast feel to it with great wild game especially the wild boar with plum sauce as well as the salmon pate with the bread as a starter. The more casual french place by the same chef isnt as good for my taste.. le Cep I believe it is called.

  4. Dirty's, used to be located on Durham just south of I-10. Great chicken-fried steak

Strawberry Patch on Westheimer where Pappas Bros Steakhouse is now. Also great chicken fried steak, as well as the best hot blueberry muffins ever created, included free in your bread basket.

Harry's Kenya, a great upscale restaurant downtown.

The San Jacinto Inn - great seafood. Right by the Battleship Texas - NOT to be confused with the Monument Inn.

    Tuffy's Seafood down on Galveston

The original Mariposa lunchroom in Neiman's at the Galleria - it used to be on the 1st floor right by the entrance to the mall, now that area is a cosmetics counter

The Sakowitz downtown lunchroom. The Sakowitz Post Oak lunchroom, for that matter. Great orange rolls in the bread basket

The original downtown James Coney Island

Las Brasas mexican restaurant on Kuykendahl just south of FM 1960

Dong Ting's very upscale chinese restaurant, in the same little area as Brennan's (and I'm looking forward to Brennan's reopening)

Cafe Artiste off Mandell and West Main

Hills Pier 19 in Galveston, now a (shudder) Joe's Crab Shack. Also Strand Street Brewery, now a Fuddruckers.

Zan's down in Galveston. I can't remember when this closed. Fortunately, I got a taste of Zan's cooking again in 2004 when he catered my wedding. Oh, yeah, Phoenix bakery down there did my wedding cakes, and now they are closed.

Cafe Miami, a cuban restaurant off Bissonnett at Hilcroft

    Dolce and Freddo

    Pino's on Westheimer and Hilcroft

    Cafe Montrose

Guy from empress - was that Richard, or Scott Chen?

    It was Scott Chen.

  5. Even though it's only been gone a short time, I miss the original Antone's on Taft. The chain Antone's pale in comparison to the original locations. I don't even know how many 'original' stores exist.

I also miss ZuZu, which was on Shepherd near Fairview. It was Mexican fast food and I remember a salsa bar or something... it was quaint with good food.

Ocean Club Buffet - Does anyone remember the happy hour buffet at Ocean Club? I believe it replaced Elan's. I moved here in 1983 and Ocean Club had a fabulour happy hour buffet. The place was nice with a good crowd, sure it wasnt a restaurant but still had great food<G>

  6. Sonny Look's in 1970 or so was a good steak place. I remember it along with Red Lion as one other mentioned. Also how about Swiss chalet, near galleria. Humble Oil took me there on a job visit trip to Houston in 1969.

Third Coast on san felipe at voss was a great restaurant. anyone remember.

    dream

I remember it well. Great place, started as a joint venture between Brennan clan and the guy who owned the Empress on 1960 and had great food. But this location was cursed as difficult to see and turn into the parkin lot from this busy intersection

  7. I used to have one of those too. They show up on eBay every now and then.

Love it too. Understand it is strong structurally so in case of a tornado or something you want to be in it. I would opt for the basement myself anyway.

I own ExxonMobil stock and glad they didnt spend my share of profits on a fancy building, all that would do is st art the tongues wagging about gasoline is over priced if they can build a fancy building yada yada.

  8. Okay, so I'm looking at four companies and comparing them to each other, trying to figure out which would be the best to work for as a newcomer to the industry. Two are majors and two are mid-majors I think. The four I've identified so far are (in no particular order): Devon Energy, El Paso Corporation, Shell, and Exxon. Does anyone have any thoughts on any of these?

I worked for ExxonMobil for 37 years and recently retired from there. Not a geologist but in my view Exxon is very strong financially (top 5 globally) and has great people. Good benefits too designed for long term career employees. They work you hard, push you hard and the people there are bright and controlling, so it has its stress but well worth it. What job doesnt have stress these days, ExxonMobil stress is just about hitting high expectations not is the firm going to make it.

Let me know if you would like to know more. One added plus for Exxon, they can move you to a number of areas. I am a Chem Engineer undergrad but had a career ranging from IT, engineering, financial to real estate. That was a huge plus for me to see different areas without changing firms.
