  1. There was an update in the Pearland Journal about this land. Apparently, the overcrowding of AISD schools on Pearland's west side is prompting a bond referendum to fund a startup for a school (type-yet-to-be-announced) on this land. Here is a link to the article:

    http://www.hcnonline...n_isd_bonds.txt

Pretty sad...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this was going to happen, just like the traffic problem at the new high school on Cullen and road construction at the same...

  2. Yes, that seems to be the McDonalds...... Wonder what they will do with La Madeleine plot which foundation has been sitting still for more than 2 years now.

Probably nothing till the economy gets going again...pretty much nothing happening with new projects for this year (McD/Sports Authority probably already started before this year)

  3. The two new westbound lanes of 518 were opened to traffic yesterday. The traffic lights are not hooked up yet, but at least this is an improvement in the traffic flow.

I hope they redo the lanes just after Kirby, right now the middle lane ends up as the left lane (two lane road) after Kirby and left lane still needs to merge as it ends?!? The middle lane should be the right lane and left lane but the left lane on the 2 lane stretch (right lane is right turn only before Kirby)

  4. The two new westbound lanes of 518 were opened to traffic yesterday. The traffic lights are not hooked up yet, but at least this is an improvement in the traffic flow.

They also put in sidewalks on the south side of 518 (east bound).

Though I still wonder if they will put up street lights on the north side of 518 (west bound)...

  5. Having lived in both Silverlake (Allison) and SCR (Ike), I can say that both sides rarely flood and it does take getting used to the retention ponds. They fill up so fast and drain off very slowly but I guess that's what they are supposed to do. NO place is really safe from the floods that could happen in the gulf coast like Allison but I think SCR does a very good job with the drainage.

  6. The Pearl Dynasty (Chinese) restaurant is now open. It sits next to HEB.

We tried it. The decor is nice and it was clean, but the food is not that great - especially for someone like me who has been trained (by Wendy) to understand what real Chinese food tastes like.

Still, I hope Pearl does thrive.

My wife is also particular about her Chinese food and so far she has not found anything she would go back to... I'm interested to see if she will like Pei Wei ...

There another Chinese place opening at the new Shadow Creek Kroger...

  7. I don't think that this is unique to the Town Center store. Foot traffic/sales is/are down nation wide, as is evident by today's retail sales number. Dillard's, Macy's, or any other retailer is having trouble at the moment. It's a tough environment out there. I heard the female co-host of Morning Call (CNBC show) mention that she was in the Saks in NY yesterday and she couldn't help but notice how empty it was despite the "great" deals.

Now if the NY Saks is empty then.............

I agree but you look at the restaurants in the front of the center you could not tell there was a economic slowdown...

  8. Kirby Commons plot was originally for townhomes, but now it's commercial.

Any idea what (if anything) will go just north of Hobby Lobby? Nothing on that updated plan. Today it's just a field and retention pond. Hoping it stays that way since it's basically my back yard....

I think with the current economy, it's probably going to remain that way for a while... :D

  9. I drove by the intersection of Kingsley and 518 yesterday. The metal poles there for the traffic lights have not been erected, so it looks like the lights there will not be turned on at the same time as the ones at 518 and Southern Trails Drive.

On a brighter note, I saw that they have started laying concrete in the lanes between Kingsley and 521, so I think it's looking good that section will also open sometime in 2009.

My guess is they probably will wait to get the traffic lights working before opening the other lanes.

Also, they built a new sidewalk on the east bound side but of course there are no street lights on that side right now... Wonder if they will build one for the other side also?

  10. I've discovered the HEB there and love it. Try to visit whenever I am out on that end of town.

As for traffic. Pearland is getting nightmarish in terms of traffic at those major intersections and all up and down 518 and 2234 (no lights). They better get a handle on that.

The problem going east bound on 518 from HEB is that the light has never been adjusted to account for the extra traffic, it favors traffic from 288 to 518 east bound, you can get about 6-8 cars (each lane) through which we know is not enough. The 518 west bound traffic is another story, lights never in sync, no right turn lanes, etc...

  11. I think you're referring to the light at the interchange. Is that a city traffic light or a TxDot traffic light? I remember seeing TxDot trucks repairing signals at 288 and 2234 after Ike.

The light timing has not been changed to help east bound traffic from 518 now that there is two malls on that side. It still favors traffic coming off 288 going east bound on 518, all they would need to do is to extend it about 10 secs as mentioned or shorten the left turn light going 288 south so the east bound traffic can get a few more seconds...

  12. Yes, there will be a light at the intersection of 518 and Southern Trails Drive/Half Moon Bay. You can see the pile of shiny steel frame laying in the grass right now; this is for the traffic light. There is a similar pile at Kingsley Dr. and 518, further west, where another traffic light will be.

Not sure what you meant by "street light", but I am fairly sure they will be spaced out all along this stretch of 518, since it is slated to have commerical development along it too.

Currently, there are only street lights on the east bound side of 518 so just wondering if there will be on the west bound side (so far no poles that I've seen).

  13. Have y'all noticed how wide those medians are going to be between the lanes on the new stretches of 518? Why didn't they just make the road 3 lanes both ways? They still could have had a small landscaped median in the middle.

I guess they didn't have the extra funds to do this. Oh well, maybe a few years down the road this can be done (like they did for the east part of Bay Area Blvd in Clear Lake). At least they were smart enough to make this section of 518 wide enough to accommodate future widening from the middle, unlike the stretches of 518 east of 288.

I pretty sure it was all about cost, wonder if there will be street lights on the otherside? The east bound exit to 518 from the Kids R Kids will be interesting, I'm assuming there will be a light at the entrance to Southern Trails so the stopped traffic will have to make sure they leave room from the cars trying to cross...

  14. Ate at the WhichWich Sunday night, behind the new Denny's at the front of the Academy complex.

Never eaten at one before, and it's a pretty cool concept. They weren't busy at all, but they were kinda slow getting our sandwiches done. Maybe time/training will fix that. Staff was very friendly though.

Their House Chips are pretty darn tasty. Kinda like kettle-cooked Ruffles with seasoning on them.

I tried it yesterday evening and a bit slow, there was atleast 6 to 8 people waiting in front of me.

Also, noticed that the McAlisters Deli window signs are no longer on the windows near the Thai Cottage, just a for lease sign
