I wish there was a farmers market roasting green chile's this weekend.. Hatch chile roasting ended last week at Central Market and I missed it...
chuy's sells already roasted hatch chiles during hatch chile season by the pound. call them and see if they still have them. buy a pound or two. save some of them in the freezer to use throughout the year.

been to max's.....didn't think their $18 hamburgers were special enough to be charged that price.
wasn't that impressed with the burger either, but from a strictly value perspective. if the same burger were $10, i'd be there every week.

so hiring a chef that's moved around 3 times in a short period is supposed to be a good thing???
you obviously never had JJ's food.

Also, I have never understood people's strong aversion to lower end dining.
i have an aversion to lower end *chain* restaurants, like joe's crab shack or the olive garden. i LOVE low end divey mom and pop joints. it's where to get the best ethnic food in houston! himalaya and vieng thai come to mind.

BTW, I like the two new food blogs that I saw added as signatures on this post from sheeats and neverfull.
Come meet us both next weekend as we are judging the "No Holds Barred" Chili Cook-off at Shady Tavern in the Heights on 10/11. If that doesn't tempt you, maybe $5 AYCE chili will.
and for the record, sheeats is the better blog

Knowing that Westheimer is getting to be known for the variety of eateries (up to Dunvale), I wonder if this entire area is eventually going to be more known for its dining options than "gay" section of town.
i think you mean dunlavy, not dunvale.

Has anyone (besides me) got full blown food poisioning from a Landry's owned restaurant?
i eat at vic & anthony's, pesce, and la griglia all the time [ducking and running].
no food poisoning ever. but i do stay away from their lower end restaurants, not for fear of getting sick, but for more obvious reasons.

anyone HAIF teams underway? anyone coming for the $5 chili "eat-off" opportunity?
this event is just a couple weeks away and i'm excited about it.

Need a reason to visit the St. Arnold brewery one last time before they move to their new downtown building in 2009?
The Houston Chowhounds present Houston's 2nd ever Miracle Berry Flavor Tripping Party!
St. Arnold Brewery
Friday, Nov 7th
6:30 - 8:30 pm
Check out the latest foodie craze -- flavor tripping! and all you can drink microbrew + berry induced tastebud tripping = the perfect combination for a raucously fun evening Willy Wonka style!
If you haven't heard of miracle berries yet, these fresh fruit native of West Africa when consumed will numb your tastebuds temporarily making all sour and bitter foods taste sweet. the fruit is safe and all natural and the effects last 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Lemons will taste like lemonade, vinegar like apple juice, goat cheese like cream cheese frosting, and stout beers like chocolate milk!
Your $35 ticket includes 1 miracle berry, a bacchanalian banquet of foods specially selected for the flavor tripping, and all-you-can-(safely)drink St. Arnold's beer! There will be 6 beers on tap including their seasonal Oktoberfest beer and delicious St. Arnold Root beer too!
A portion of the evening's proceeds will go to the Koonce Family Benefit Fund set up for James and Katherine Koonce who were critically injured in the Brennan's fire. Or give directly to the Koonce fund! http://www.brennanshouston.com/koonce/
Tickets are only available online as we expect the event to sell out before the event. There are a limited number of berries for this event as these fruit are extremely rare, highly perishable and hard to obtain in large volumes. Miracle berry tablets will also be available for purchase at the event for those looking for a more intensified berry trip. For more info on miracle berries or to buy tickets online, go to http://www.theberryfairy.com
