  1. Not sure if the Quiet Zone has been implemented, but I have noticed a large DEcrease in the amount of train horns I've been hearing over here in the East End. It's been weeks, I would say, since I've been awakened at 3 or 5 am with a blaring train horn. Does anyone have news about this or am I just sleeping deeper than normal, as I get older??

  2. Air New Zealand and Air Egypt are members of the Star Alliance, and Auckland and Cairo are their largest hubs respectively. Since Continental (and United) are also members of the Star Alliance, passengers can buy tickets on any of the airlines, making connections in these cities much easier. It can draw lots of connection traffic (rather than O&D traffic) on both ends, making the routes financially lucrative.

OK, I guess it pays to read the press release! That being said, however, the only advantage I see after looking at NZ's route map, is Australia and deep deep South Pacific, vs Micronesia which CO has pretty much covered. Once CO is UA (((~~shutter~~))) they will have Australia covered, as well, thus eliminating the need for connection traffic from AKL. (btw, above I used ACK as the city code for Auckland, NZ. It is in fact, AKL. I apologize for the error.) Just my view. I'm in no way an airline route specialist. I'm sure they know what they are doing, UA merger notwithstanding.

  3. I don't understand the logic behind the recent destination announcements by CO. Auckland and Cairo?? Are they larger business centers than I realize? I know they wouldn't begin a service without thoroughly doing the research for potential revenue, but these seem odd, esp IAH-ACK. About a dozen more cities come to mind before ACK that would be great markets from IAH. Maybe these are routes that were easy to get approval for.

  4. as i prepare to head out for the day, i wondered what the rest of the haif community might be up to today.

i'm heading over to hubbell & hudson to pick up my homemade basil pesto pasta for a cookout on the woodlands waterway and then over to anadarko to watch the fireworks, depending on the weather of course. hope it doesn't rain. of course, getting stuck at goose's acre because of rain wouldn't be a total loss!

what are you up to today?

Enjoying the very nice weather in Big Bear Lake CA. We're about to head to a cookout at some friends followed by a fireworks show over the lake. The 14% humidity along with the 6700' elevation, however, is doing a serious number on my sinuses.

  5. If Phoenicia has parking for its customers, I'll shop there for specialty items. What Eado and the Near East End need most is a good, clean full-line supermarket...not a gourmet "foodie" boutique...not a grocery geared to a particular ethnic group...not an el-cheapo limited-selection warehouse store...but a place where the area's diverse population can find a variety of fresh produce, meats, seafood, bakery items, pantry staples, etc.

I kinda said the same thing in the other thread. Kroger is lame, but I don't see myself going to Phoenicia. Is there a large Mediterranean/Middle Eastern population in or near downtown that this market is targeting? Like I said before, I'm all for a specialty foods store, but secondary to a regular full service supermarket. I'll have to see what Epicurean Express has to offer, but I'll probably feel the same way about it, except it's closer, and parking may be easier.

  6. I'm all for specialty foods and stuff, but I was hoping for something more "mainstream", I guess. I've never been to their store on Westheimer, so I don't know....can I go there for paper towels and Diet coke, 409 and toilet paper?? I love olive oil, capers and hummus, but they only go so far for my daily needs. I guess I'll just continue to shop at KillerKrogerOnKullen for my staples. But I know where to go if I need grape leaves and baklava!

  7. Today, I got another Census Form. Do I fill out another one? This one says "YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW". I don't recall the original one stating that.

I got a second one today, also. I have already sent it in once, and I'm now wondering if maybe I received, then filled out my neighbors or something. This one is definitely addressed to me. I don't want to be responsible for fudging up the numbers.

  8. While it is true airline food must be prepared differently, it also has to be seasoned and cooked to satisfy the most people, thus not too spicy, not too much garlic, salt, etc. Also, not to split hairs, but microwave ovens are not used on CO aircraft. In fact the food is precooked, then heated in hot air convection ovens. Also, to many peoples surprise, aircraft are not equipped with refrigerators.

  9. This is a really good idea. And don't several of the Houston chains operate in the new terminal already?

I am sad to see them ditch their meal service. It was the one thing that made me fly them over other airlines (honest, I am not just saying that).

Anyhow, I also thought I heard somewhere that they are going to be charging extra for additional legroom. WTH?!?

Pappasitos, Pappadeauxs, and Pappas BBQ each have an outlet in Terminal E. All the other stuff, as I recall, is made up of national chains. Wendy's, Subway, Starbucks, etc.

As for the legroom deal, I'm not really clear on the policy. I guess if there is an open exit row seat, you can pay to sit there. Whooppee. What if you're the sucker that paid to sit there, then someone who did not pay sits in the other available exit row seat. Won't you feel like a sucker? You think the flight attendants are gonna kick them out? i doubt it.

  10. Or at a minimum, teach their bus drivers how to drive. At times they are very aggressive and kind of oblivious to the traffic around them. I've been nearly side swiped many times due to the drivers failure to check their rear view mirror. "They'll move. I'm bigger than they are" seems to be the line of reasoning.

  11. Another idea would be something similar to what United does, giving free meals to people buy full fare Y/B tickets.

I think they came to this conclusion by looking at what was thrown away (yes, they went through all of the trash) and polling customers. They've posted on their Twitter feed that food wasn't a differentiator for a majority of their customers.

It can't be much of a differentiator if the free food is crap. Most of what CO serves as free is of lower quality than one might find at an interstate truck stop. As a consumer, I'd be very willing to pay for something that is of higher quality. You get what you pay for, (YGWYPF?? pretty good, eh, kylejack?) and free food ain't good.

  12. This comes down to climate dictating design.

These things have to be COOL to operate properly during the summer. If you cover them up, you would then have to spend a certain amount of power to cool the things down.

Don't really know how other cities with our same climate handles it, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to take on the added expense to do so.

Any idea how they keep it COOL in the summer now?
