  1. I love ABC 13 and wouldn't watch anything else. I plan to actually intern there in 2 years, but is it me, or does anyone else think they need to place a permenant co-anchor along side Melanie Lawson during the 11am newscast?

Yes i certainly do i'm so tired of seeing Sharron one day, Art the next and Ilona the day after...

I think Melanie and Ilona make a good team together on that newscast... the chemistry of them 2 flow really well.

Ilona Carson has been pulling in alot of work and she's starting to become one of my favorite anchors in Houston t.v.

i just really hope that she gets thats position.

However i dont think that Art should be sitting at the anchor desk, he does much better when he's on the field doing those special reports, his chemistry just dosent flow well with anyone he anchors with... your always left with awkward moments. But i guess if its not broken dont fix it. Live at Five is # 1 so i guess theres really no need for change.

  2. Does it count that the Bryan/College Station Metro area gets abc13 news (in addition to its on abc) adding an additional/potential 230,000 plus viewers over the other channels?

While im not 100% sure i would really think so, its 230,000 viewers. I know that in college station they have their own little stations i believe its (NBC,CBS). So it surely shows ch13's dominance in Southeast Texas.

  3. Ratings have just come out for the first of the new year.

    # 1 in the mornings with Tom Koch, Sharron Melton, Meteorologist Casey Curry and Don Nelson.

    # 1 at 4 with Ilona Carson and Erik Barajas, beating KHOU Oprah.

#1 Live At Five with Melanie Lawson and Art Rascon.

#1 at 6 & 10 with Dave Ward and Gina Gaston.

But for many who keep up with the local news ratings scene in Houston this may come as a major shock. 13 Eyewitness News was #1 at 11a.m. for the first time since 2005. Channel 13's 1 hour 11a.m. newscast normally ranks #2 behind KHOU's 30-minute noon newscast. Well this sweeps it came in at #1 beating KHOU 11 News at Noon with Ron Trevino.

Channel 2 came in at # 3 all across the board, but are showing gains on channel 11.

Channel 11 has recently had to lay-off two on-air talents morning traffic guy Darby Douglas who had worked there since 96'

and Sports Anchor Giff Nielsen who had been employed by 11 News since 84'

KPRC laid-off 4pm & 6pm news anchor Wendy Corona and replaced her with Rachell MCcniel.

  4. I don't know if anyone noticed, but speaking of Talent Tags and Opens, As of yesterday ABC 13 has slightly changed their Talent Tags. They've added a very small graphic before the big ABC 13 logo comes from the bottom of the screen. They also changed all of them to say Meterorologist in front of the meteorologist names instead of just their names. Just small changes I noticed.

i just saw the 4pm talent bumper and i noticed it it actually looks neat and makes it look more high class.

  5. Okay, we live in the 10 largest media market. so we have a lot of good stations, with high quality. so i want to know when it comes to the stations which ones do you watch more, which ones do you trust, who do you turn to for breaking news, weather, sports think about all that while you vote.

and if you channel surf like me, choose the station you watch the most.

  6. Well, you're almost correct. Yes, it is true that the people who make those decisions believe in their hearts that weekends are the least watched days. And yes, that is why the weekend is chosen to debut new features -- to work out the bugs before the big weekday debuts.

BUT -- the numbers show that Sunday night is the most watched night for local television news (people are catching up and getting mentally ready for the new work week ahead). Friday and Saturday are the least watched (people are out doing things). But thinking that fewer people watch on the weekend is engrained in the 9-5 Monday-Friday types (news directors, general managers, etc...) who make those decisions.

Not really new opens. They're pretty much identical to the old ones, just widescreen and shiny and with updated building shots. Otherwise the look and graphics were exactly the same.

oh that makes since too, thanks.

  7. I mean Houston, I live in Houston. I'm the biggest ABC 13 Fan you'll ever meet, especially the 4PM Newscast.

thank god someone else like me, i love channel 13 also, ha i thought no one felt the same way i did, lol.

but really i'm like one of their biggest fans.

  8. That makes alot of sense, I didn't think about it that way.

I wonder will ABC 13 get a new HD open or Talent Tag like ABC 7 Chicago? They also have really great graphics, even though no one beats our ABC Station.

oh wls-tv got new opens when they went HD.

and did you say no one is better than are abc station meaning in houston, or abc7 in chicago.

because i live here in houston and no one is better than channel 13. ha lol.

  9. Yeah, Today I wanted to watch some news at 5 and ABC 13 came on at 5:30, so I flipped down and noticed that KPRC did finally go to HD. I didn't know today was the first day though. They don't really need a new set, Their's is fairly new and really nice, not a ABC 13 set but nice. I have noticed that every station debuts something new on weekend newscast. KHOU debuted in HD Super Bowl night. KTRK debuted their new set on a Saturday. KPRC debuted in HD Sunday. What's with weekends?

the reason why they debut their sets, graphics,hd on weekends is because they like to test it out to see if it will work and how good it looks, rather than on weekdays when more people watch and try to fix it before the weekday debut.

simply-less people watch weekends, so they test it out and see if their are any flaws and fix it before the weekday

  10. Don't forget -- if it's a YouTube video, you can embed it directly in your message. Just click the "Insert: YouTube" button in the "Insert Special Item" drop-down menu.

I haven't seen KPRC since 2002. They really have toned things down a lot. It's much more watchable. They do need a new set, though. It looks a little like the front porch of a ranch house. Is that a faux stone column between the anchor desk and the weather pod?

yeah i don't really watch them either i just heard they went HD. and they just got the set i believe in 06, i don't like it though.

hopefully goign HD will change KPRC to a way more watchable station, one without props in every report.

  11. well i think channel 13 had this set in mind for almost 2 years, once their old one began to get to small and fall apart. but they ran into some bumps also. i think the new set is a set back for channel 11 i hope its temporary, but it is kinda nice.

but of course being that channel 13 is number one, you can't blame the other stations for doing what they do.
