  1. Huh, wouldn't let me edit; Anyway the new pub is (appropriately) "The Public House". Here's hoping it lasts.

It looks like it will be another Irish type pub, but maybe with a little more of a pub atmosphere. I'll give it a try, but we'll see how long it lasts. I don't care much for the Mercury Bar. Too expensive for Katy, but I haven't been there in quite a while, so maybe their prices have come down some.

  2. Being a Katy mom and living in Cinco Ranch myself, I could take offense with your posting, but I couldn't agree more. I could write a manual on "How to be a Katy Mom". Drive an oversized SUV while talking on the phone, a little heavy set with bermuda shorts and flip flops, bob type hair style, perfect pedicure, make sure YOUR child has the best of everything, and by all means, do not let anyone get in YOUR way!!! :D

I definitely wasn't trying to be offensive, as I live in Cinco myself. Just pointing out what I've observed the past 1 1/2 years of living here. A lot of these kids have no idea what the real world is like...

  3. I do like BWW for the sports bar atmosphere, although this one seems to have a "closed in" feeling more than the others around the area. Actually I like the Sugarland location the best, since they seem to have more light coming in via more windows, etc.

I have to agree about Katy area parents and their "entitled" children's attitudes. As a parent myself, I am VERY conscious of my child's behavior when I take her places. I will not put up with these antics at all. I've noticed after living in Katy for the past year or so the entitlement and spoiled brat mentality of many of the kids around here. It's especially acute in the wealthier areas like Cinco. And to watch these parents with them is aggravating. So many of them will have problems later on... <_<

  4. They seemed pretty busy each time I went by, so I'm surprised that they closed so soon. This seems like it may have been a case of unrealistic expectations.

Really sorry to see them go. Bret and Amy were nice people trying to make a go at it. I know there were some issues with the developer and the owner of the adjacent property at one time, also the HOA for cinco ranch. I'm sure the economy being slow didn't help as well. I enjoyed going there. I wish them well in any future endeavors. :(

  5. Since you have lived here since 1977 you have no clue what mass apartments do to an area. Also this area has never had the amount of apartments being thrown up as they are now. I have lived in other places where this same thing has happened and over the years it did not turn out well. I can point you toward one for example in Baton Rouge, La. One of the most pristine and family oriented areas for years let develpors put up mass apartments under the pretext of upscale living. After some years the owners didn't want it anymore and sold it to another management company who in return decided the place didn't need to be an upscale location. Little by little the tenants changed as the rent dropped. The place is now one of the most crime ridden places and the whole surrounding area now looks like a dump.

just curious, are you talking about the Gardere area of BR?

  6. Mine is up again too. I think I will finally have to protest as I do not want to take any more increases in my escrow causing my payments to go up again.

Something is amiss here. My appraisal went up 32% while home prices are dropping everywhere. I live in Cinco Ranch Southwest. I also see other homes in the vicinity with the exact same house design appraised for less.

Does anyone know what is going on down at the appraisal district? Something doesn't add up here.

  7. Back on topic, is this new place going to be a BW3 bar like midtown or the village, or more of a Katy style family-friendly bar and grille? I wonder if it will have NTN?

From the looks of it, it will be a stand alone bar/restaurant like the one in Sugarland. All of the BWW's I've been to (Houston area locations, Coll Sta, Lake Ch, Lafayette, B.R., Houma) have been family friendly. Of course it's still a sports bar on steroids but great to bring the family.

Obviously, BWW is a favorite of mine, hopefully open in time for March Madness!! Can't Wait! :D

  8. The poinsetta sounds great - that I will have to try! I remember from my daughter's research that boxty is from the gaelic word "bactasi" which means to cook potatoes over an open fire. lol - today's educational tidbit in the Katy forum :-).

It is spelled boxty in Ireland as well as America. http://www.boxtyhouse.ie/

Family and I ate at Gallaghers back in 2007. Very good restaurant in Dublin.

  9.

Went to the Angel and the Ox last week. Very disappointing. The place is no more Irish than a box of Lucky Charms.

How can the owners have got it so wrong? The place is very stark with no atmosphere. No cosy nooks or fireplace. Service was very poor and only two white wines on offer. Surely they should be pulling out all the stops during the first few weeks of opening. You only get one chance to make a first impression and they blew it. It is basically a square glass fronted room in a deserted strip mall.

In this economy with businesses failing at every turn, I would have thought they would have done their homework and really researched what a british pub is all about. Although Baker Street is a chain, they have got it right and created a place where you want to spend time. The Katy area is teeming with ex-pats with plenty of disposable income crying out for decent eating/drinking establishments on a par with the UK, unfortunately the Angel and Ox just does not come close.

I have to admit, I was pretty excited about this place opening up, however I was a little disappointed that it's to airy to be a true Irish/British pub. I do like that I can get Tennant's on tap, as the only other place I've had that was in Aberdeen. I like the fact that they play authentic Irish type music on the weekends and have plenty on the jukebox. I thought the food was pretty good, considering they are just starting out and have a limited menu. The service I think will improve in time. I just hope that they maybe redo some of the interior to resemble more of a true Irish pub, much like Red Lion, Kennealy's (sp?), Richmond Arms, Shay McElroy, etc.

I think being in Katy though presents somewhat of a different issue since you have to appeal to families somewhat to stay profitable. Thoughts anyone?

  10. Haha!! No apologies necessary, as my husband and I say that all the time. How do these nail salons, on every corner, stay in business?? I find it hard to believe that there are that many women in Katy who need manicures!

Anyway, I'm praying it's going to be a Barnes and Noble, but that's wishful thinking.

I also wonder what's going to become of the former Linens N' Things space...any ideas?

    Thanks.

How about a Jimmy Buffett's margaritaville?

  11. Sounds intruiging. I think that the success of Baker Street just showed how starved the Katy area is for "adult" hangouts. I like Baker Street, but I agree that it is essentially Applebee's as an English pub.

IMO, the success of Villagio is going to revolve around creating a community space because without that, this is basically a glorified strip mall. Whenever I go there, the few people who are there have come to visit a specific business and then leave immediately after.

By comparison, La Centerra has created a destination where people will go and visit multiple shops or sit in the courtyard despite restaurants that are not as good as Villagio.

I think installing a splash pad like La Centerra and the Downtown Aquarium would maybe help too. :D

  12. I have to agree about the neighborhood bar concept. I like Baker St. okay, and was thrilled when they first opened, and it's easy to bring our toddler there. However, I'd like a neighborhood concept, even though I live down at the end of Fry Rd in Cinco SW. I think the Lord Byron place along with the new Irish pub will be some nice additions to "bar hop" in the Villagio. What would happen to the humidor, just curious? B)

  13. After seeing many questions concerning the Villagio, I just wanted to share my opinions of the new stops in the Villagio center:

Ate at the new Stadia sports bar and grill. My take was it resembles a smaller version of the Fox Grill in Galleria. The food, at least what I had, was very good - much different than the wings place that was there before. I have a feeling this place will have staying power, not to mention the signage on the front is much more visible than the previous owner. I will be back.

But my biggest excitement is the new Irish Pub going in!!! This I believe, will be a big hit. Finally some traditional Irish food and music in Katy. WIth the oil and gas expats out here, it should be a good addition. On the other hand, they are predicting a Dec 26th opening, and I say no way. They still have work to do in there as plenty of contractors were working out there yesterday. I'd say more like mid January. I think the name was Angel and the Ox pub.

Overall, I'd like to see Villagio turn into something like a family friendly mini-Rice Village.
