  1. On another subject, I think Houston need some simple good urban sushi places like they have in JAPAN and west coast cities like Seattle, San Fran etc. None of those $15 dollar fancy rolls. I just fish, udon bowls, yakatori etc. There used to be a nice one in downtown few years ago where a bar now sits across from House of Blues. Oiishi is the closest simple but good Japanese place I have found in the city area but it is far away (Richmond @ Timmons) for a regular outing. I am not sure if the pretenious elements moving to Midtown lately will ever concieve of such concepts.

You're referring to an izakaya! A Japanese tapas-style restaurant. I loved going to those when I used to live in Japan! The one they used to have in downtown was called Daiji's, but has been replaced by Reserve 101.

  2. I need to make more effort to pay attention to my e-mails at work. I work at the Enterprise building and an e-mail was sent out to all tenants at the end of January letting us know that we will be participating in the Cities Go Red to raise awareness for women and heart disease.

To see the cities that participated in it last year: http://goredforwomen.org/cities_go_red.aspx

At night they also turn the lights red under the trees in our (newly built!) plaza.

I think it would've been cool to see other buildings downtown participate!

  3. I noticed this last night. I live right by downtown and I can see the skyline from my apartment, but last night I had a "was that there before and I'm just noticing it now?" moment. Apparently it is in fact new!

It would be funny if it was for Valentine's day because those same buildings didn't don festive lights during Christmas or July 4.

  4. I'm really sad because I just moved to the area around the same time they closed down for remodeling so I never got to experience the homeyness of the original Golden Room. However, despite the sterile ambiance the new places gives off, the food is TERRIFIC. I've been there 4 times since they opened a few weeks ago and I have yet to be disappointed. And according to memebag's review of the food since it became Khun Kay Thai, I'm glad I'm not really missing out!

  5. Yeah, it's gotten scary. I know of one big firm that hasn't had layoffs yet. I've heard rumors of some degree of layoffs at 4 others. And I could list four firms that have laid off 15-25%... Anyone in the business that has survived so far should be updating resumes and portfolios over the holiday.

I work for that "big firm" that Highway6 is referring to. We've had our annual reviews and a lot of us were even given bonuses and raises, and so far, no sign of layoffs. Some of the firms my friends work for have seen a significant number of layoffs, mostly due to the lack of (or cancelled/on-hold) developer and/or residential projects. Our firm does mostly institutional, healthcare and petrochem, and more recently, international projects, and I think that's what's kept us afloat so far. But 2009 is creeping just around the corner so I'm not sure if some of the folks returning from holiday are going to be in for a surprise. I sure hope not.

I'm not a designer, though. I work in the marketing department and to be honest, January is a busy busy month for us! But in these tough times, more firms are submitting proposals for projects they probably would normally overlook, increasing the competition and making it even more difficult just to get shortlisted. Now there's an even greater amount of pressure for us in marketing anytime a proposal is due.

No matter how crappy my day is (like the fact that I'm at work the day after Christmas), I'm just glad and thankful that I have a job.

  6. GAP

    Banana Republic

    H&M (PLEASE!!!!)

    American Eagle

    Abercrombie and Fitch

    American Apparel

    Oh good lord.

They're opening up an American Apparel store on 909 Texas. Kind of an odd place to put a new store... I don't really think that area in downtown caters to its targeted customers.

Actually. Scratch that. Just looked at the AA website and it no longer has the downtown location listed as opening soon; they just took it out completely. (?)

Would love to see an H&M though. When is it going to be OUR turn? Every other major metropolitan city has one EXCEPT Houston. Or Texas, rather. A Zara would be fab too!

And is Forever 21 going to open on Thursday as well? I have a party that evening and need a new dress!

  7. I've read about these miracle berries before.

The things people will do to get high nowadays! :D

I went to the last one in La Strada. After first reading up on flavor-tripping parties from the NY Times I was soooo psyched to finally get to try it. Ten of my friends came with me.... and 8 of us were slightly disappointed because we didn't experience a great deal of the "tripping" sensation. Tabasco tasted spicy and brussel sprouts tasted.... like brussel sprouts. We thought we had a malfunctioning berry! I think the experience varies person to person, but perhaps we also had high expectations.

The two friends who got a kick out of the event mentioned that it's important to not swallow whilst sucking on the berry seed. And the 8 of us also figured drinking alcohol beforehand might have been a problem.

Anyway, regardless, it was fun. We ate a helluva lot of limes & lemons and drank red vinegar like it was a cocktail.

  8. They were charging more. The price has come down quite a bit since they were first listed. I want to say the more expensive one started at $995,000 and the other one in the $970s.

Just a few months ago, I saw it on HAR.com listed for just below $800,000 and it sold this summer. I live just around the corner from it. Stunning home! I'm almost tempted just to randomly knock on the door and ask for a tour. :P

  9. I live at the Rice Hotel. I'm watching Chase Tower getting completely trashed right out my window. A small tornado repeatedly forms on Travis St, each time blowing out more windows. A copier(?) just flew out a window and landed half a block down Texas Ave.

Edit: first power blink downtown. All utilities still functioning.

Jeff Ehling of Channel 13 just confirmed this. "All of the windows from this side of the street are gone....."

Just wondering what I'm going to return to when I got back to the office downtown next week....

  10. So I woke up just about 15 minutes ago to what I believe was a news reporter yelling into the mic (unless she was just a crazy person having conversations with Ike). I'm also assuming it was channel 11 since their station is just down the street. But by the time I could flip on the TV (I was sans glasses and half-asleep), she stopped talking. Not sure why she was reporting from the courtyard of my apartment complex though --- because we're still amazingly one of the few lucky ones with electricity? Because we have extensive damage outside my window that I'm not aware of? Kind of makes me nervous.

And just a minute ago a loud bang/pop just went off....

  11. Anyone in the downtown Houston area? How is it? Still ok in Spring...heavy wind

Just over a mile away from DT on Dallas & Montrose. I still have power, though not too long ago they showed on channel 13 that some folks on the south side of West Gray near the River Oaks shopping center were in the dark. The other building to our complex is covering the view of downtown, so I can't see if any of the buildings have any light. The wind has been getting stronger though by the minute....yikes.

I spoke to a lady who's been living at this complex since it first opened in 2001 and noted that certain buildings in our complex got flooded during Allison. Luckily I'm on the third floor! Except that's not of any comfort when some a-hole on the fourth floor in the adjacent building still has his bbq pit, patio chairs, coolers, bikes out on his balcony (and lawd knows what else ---- machetes? saws? chinese throwing ninja stars?)

  12. My boss took heed of the mayor's recommendation and closed the office tomorrow. My coworker said that in the 10 years she's worked here, this is the first time they've closed up shop because of inclement weather.

We were also instructed by the VP of operations to cover up our monitors and phones with trash bags before we leave the office today. Working in downtown with tunnel level offices, 4-story high windows and a 100+ foot atrium, our office is especially susceptible to wind & water damage. It's kind of amusing looking across the office and seeing a sea of black bags.

  13. I go to the Houston Gym right off of Durham and I-10. Seems to be popular for the Heights folk because I'll usually work out and then find the same people buying groceries at the Kroger's on 11th. It's small, so you won't find the nice amenities at the suburban gyms like Lifetime or LA Fitness. There's also no pool. But the staff are all very friendly and I love their classes!

  14. I'm new to HAIF, so forgive me if this topic has already been addressed or if I'm posting in the wrong neighborhood. Just wanted to share the news that Whole Foods plans on building a new store on Dallas & Waugh, right next to the AIG building. The deli guy at the Whole Foods on W. Alabama gave me a heads up, so I looked it up and found an article about it posted on chron.com (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5777804.html).

    And it's ABOUT TIME.

I just moved down the street and I'm excited about the fact that it'll just be within a walking distance away!
