  1. I haven't seen anyone mention Old Mexico so far....they were on W. Gray close to the mid-town area now, actually right on the curve. That dude was German from what my parents say. anyway, you walked thru an area reminiscent of being in Mexico, with all these things you could buy at market. They had cool toys for kids. This kept you occupied waiting for your table. They had some awesome food! Place caught on fire, and they never rebuilt it.

I guess I'll finish reading this thread...I had to post, I couldn't help myself...thanks for the memories y'all!

I mentioned Old Mexico in the forum some time ago. I was raised in the Bellaire/Southwest Houston area and in the 50's and 60's Old Mexico was the only place to go for good Mexican food. Do you remember what was at the check out counter? There was a baksket with a large white card that read "Mexican Jumping Beans" and a warm lamp shining down on the basket to keep the beans active. Next to the basket were small maracas, just right for the kids. I still remember my parents buying a painted pop cork gun for me on one trip. What a great restaurant, I rank it up there with my childhood memories from Alfred's Delicassen, Prince's Drive In, Brittons Broiler Burger and JuJubees at the Bellaire Theater...Eric Younkin

  2. Thanks for jogging my memory with "The Enchanted Cup" one of my favorites back in the day on Westheimer. Many dates at that small coffee house back in the early 60's, what a great place. Born in 1949, southwest Houston, and moved to Fort Worth in early 70's...Eric

I was born in Houston in 1948, grew up in the Heights and Timbergrove before we moved to Dallas in 1965. These are some of the places I remember:

Hamburger House. (2 locations in the Heights, 1 was on 11th a few blocks east of Heights Blvd. I think the other was on 20th)

    Prince's Hamburgers on N. Shepherd @ 14th?

    Pig Stand on N.Shepherd

Kaphan's (once a year on my parent's anniversary)

    Christie's on S.Main (Fired Shrimp!!!)

    Albritton's Cafeteria

    Clear Creek Inn in Kemah

Doyle's Delicatessan on 34th near Waltrip High. (still the best pizza I ever had)

John's Shephard Drive BBQ. (He closed every year to go to the World Series)

The Enchanted Cup. (A coffe house on Westheimer)

    Rettig's Ice Cream Shops

Somebody mentioned J&J Barbecue on Herkimer and 11th. The BBQ was good and one year we had them smoke a turkey for us. Some idiot used pine!!. Have you ever had a turkey that tasted like Pine-Sol? :o

  3. While doing a search for one of my old favorites in the mid 60's Los Troncos, I came across your forum. Wow, what great memories. I was raised in Southwest Houston (off Hillcroft and Bissonnett) in the 50's and 60's. Nothing but corn, cotton and watermelon fields back then, it sure looks different now. Below are my favorite restaurants as I recall, may have some to add later. 4. Welcome to the forum - was the Locust address inner loop/Post Oak/Ave. C?

Locust is all now commercial in that area, but here is a block book map showing lots on the eastern side of Post Oak:

    http://books.tax.hctx.net/v037/AE1997_37-38_0053.jpg

The Locust on your map, east of Post Oak is where I lived until 1955. The first block on the north side of the street. I have drivin through the area, the small frame homes have been demolished and given way to much larger homes, still some of the smaller ones still exist. In 2000 the house I lived in on Locust was still standing...Eric

  5. Lived in the Bellaire area, Locust at Post Oak (before freeway) from 1949 until 1955. My family built off corner of Hillcroft and Bissonnet (AKA Richmond) and lived there until 1970 so I am very familiar with the history and past of that area. I would be happy to help with any information for those interested in that part of the city back when...Eric
