  1. My short-term retail whish list:

    Thomas Pink

    Charles Tyrwhitt

    Bose Audio

    Diesel

    Blockbuster Video

    Hallmark

My long-term wish: HP is still open in 2010

Please never mention Bose Audio again. Their speakers are horribly overrated/overpriced, and offer below-average sound quality. Customers might have more fun with a small electronics boutique. Just my thoughts.

  2. Enough is enough! We have 2 perfectly good pro stadiums in Houston that can accomodate any future needs of a pro soccer franchise, Reliant and the Astrodome. I can understand why the Dynamo and Texans might have difficulty reaching an agreement to use Reliant, but there is no good reason not to fall back on the dome. The county is begging for a tenant and it would be far cheaper to upgrade and adapt then to build a new stadium downtown that would hinder traffic flow. I have yet to read a single good excuse for why the dome wouldn't work. The perfect chance for synergy, instead of wasting more money on team ego and questionable insider land deals. And to make it perfect, the sports' complex parking lot fronts 1836 South Loop! What a great place for a new entrance.

Though I might settle for converting the huge parking lot (just a few blocks east of the light-rail) at 1836 Old Spanish Trail into their stadium! 1836 Old Spanish Trail, an address with the added, uh, bonus, of offering something for everyone. Right, Carol Avocado? The team lost a lot of goodwill in this town when it caved to the usual professional victimhood race-card intimidators, they could win a lot of it back by solving the region's problem of what to do with the dome. Public sentiment is strongly in favor of such a win-win solution, what a masterstroke of PR it would be for the team, city, and county. Right now there is a strong anti-incumbent mood towards all levels of gov't based on the perception that little gets done, problems aren't being addressed, and far, far too much money is ineptly wasted. The dome isn't the most important issue we face, but this would be a simple and highly visible solution to counter those perceptions of gov't inefficiency and waste.

The Dynamo has their heart set on a brand new BMW, while we have Lexus that is already paid for and can easily be reconditioned. If the Dynamo insist on perfection, let 'em and their entitlement attitude go (to hell!)

You're nuts. Do you have any idea how large the Astrodome and Reliant Stadium actually are? It would be downright depressing to force 20,000 fans into a facility that seats 80,000, has poor sightlines, etc...

    Just, no.

  3. Max Movers. We did an in-town move from North Houston to Central Houston, and they packed up our stuff in no-time flat. We were literally amazed... our jaws were on the ground. We spent 3 weeks packing up half of our belongings and they packed up the other half in 3 hours! Very careful, very courteous. We've recommended them to all of our friends.

  4. Hey guys, a quick question. A friend of mine is considering moving out of her house into a 3-bedroom Loft apartment sometime within the next year. Her price range is $300-350K. Do you know which areas would be best for a young(ish) hip newly single woman? With two fully-grown kids who will visit on occasion?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I'm just hoping I can get some guidance about where to look to find the best deals on (not new) lofts.

  5. Tell that to a parent whose child goes to a school with a leaky roof. Daily maintenance is more important IMO. HISD has to mention the magnet schools because most of their other ones aren't doing so well. Dropout rates continue to be staggering. This hurts us all longterm.

Cry me a river? I'm sorry, but how many facilities are in such a deplorable state? And how likely do you think it is that HISD will simply leave a leaky roof on a building with outraged parents beating down their doors... Other facilities will be kept up, but HISD wants to keep its two flagship schools, HSPVA & Debakey, in good facilities. Debakey is already undergoing extensive renovations to their school as we speak.

  6. Yes, but HSPVA is not the same as any other school. As I'm sure you already know, HSPVA is a magnet school with international acclaim. HISD has made it a point to continually mention how important it truly is. This school went from being located in a former synagogue to its current success.

HSPVA has won 3 Grammy awards for their music department. Also, it was the first Arts school in the nation to integrate academic and fine arts into a single school (true!). And it became the first school in the Southwest (3rd nationwide) to offer programs in both the visual and performing arts.

When its current facilities were being build, High Schools only operated for grades 10-12. As such, HSPVA was built for approximately 450 students. The year the new facility opened (1981) HISD switched to a 4-year High School program. As such, the school was instantly 33% more crowded than it was designed for. An example of the size limitations may be seen not only during lunch, where students may eat anywhere on campus, but during assemblies and school events as only 3 grades can fit into the Denney Theater. Depending on the event, either the Senior class is forced to sit onstage or the Freshman class is relegated to a separate auditorium and only able to participate through a live video feed displayed on monitors throughout the room. Not to mention the HISD channel located upstairs, which occupies approx. 1/3 of the 2nd floor's available space. As a result of this lack of space, instruments & large objects are constantly stored in the hallways. Several classes are even forced to take place in the hallway as they don't have enough rooms, even with temporary buildings installed in the outside parking lots. This is a fire hazard and DEFINITELY unsafe.

When HSPVA moves to a new facility, the plan for the current building is to transform it into some other kind of facility for minimal cost. Possibilities have included relocating the Andrew Carnegie Vanguard High School and even expanding the HISD channel's facilities, making a media complex for HISD.

Structurally, HSPVA is a small but sound building. Its appeal and benefits to the people of Houston is that it is an internationally-acclaimed high school arts institution. HSPVA needs this new facility to expand its offerings to its students and the community.

  7. The Uptown Houston website lists this new project as:

A.D. Players Theatre: New construction is planned for a performance theatre at Yorktown and Westheimer. The 85,000 square foot theatre complex will hold three theaters with a total seating of 1,000. The theatre should be complete within three years. The A.D. Players broke ground on the new location February 2006.

Do we know any additional information? The AD Players theatre website does not have any information about the architect, renderings, or any other information. This will be a great venue. What else can we find out?

  8. When I was searching the Simon.com website for the galleria, under Restaurants it lists "BiCE - Coming soon!" Is this the same BiCE restaurant from NYC?

Does anyone have any info/perspective on this? I, for one, have never been to this restaurant before. AND, the BiCE website does not list any restaurants planned for Houston.

Also, do we know what's happening with the Lord & Taylor space yet? Definitively?

    Steven.

  9. What if they did a Grocery delivery service, but to your office? Would that be feasible?

They'd deliver some essentials (In a styrofoam cooler, or something similar) to your office between 4 and 5:30. On the next trip, you'd simply return the previously used Styrofoam cooler. Maybe have a 10 dollar deposit for the cooler, upon using the service.

The only real question, is whether or not bosses would allow the employees to keep this stuff @ their desks.

    Good or bad idea?

    Steven.
