  1. if you send me or post a pic with kanji.. i can translate it for you. :)

This is a photograph of a wall display in the lobby of a hotel I stayed in recently in Asia.

It was a business hotel with visitors from around the world. As you can see, they mark the time for the major cities so people can orient themselves and know what time it is where they're from. This was especially important for the throngs of buisinessmen constantly clogging the bank of pay phones in the lobby when they realized their cell phones don't work in Japan.

Anyway, the designers of the display could have chosen any city to represent America's Central time zone. They could have gone with Dallas or Chicago or whatever. But they chose Houston.

    Interesting.

notice that they have Tokyo as the center of the world. ;)

  2. I remember seeing a program about poor in the US. They said the poorest area in the US is just outside of Brownsville.. I forgot the name of the place, but it is on the U.S. side of the border and the average household income was just over $800/yr. That's poor even throughout Latin America.

They live in the US.. so I guess that means they know nothing of poverty too, right?

  3. Jeebus-

You truly don't understand poverty if you think you'd have a hard time finding 15,000 poor white folks in a concentrated area. Some of the poorest people in America are white folks who inhabit the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Caucasians still make up the largest % of the poor in this country. Don't let your ignorance fool you.

The simple fact of the matter is Americans are totally BLINDED to poverty. We don't like to see it so we close our eyes and try to make ourselves feel better by blaming folks for being poor. We tell ourselves little myths about pulling yourself up by your bootstraps but have no comprehension of how tough that must be. We get angry at seeing the homeless out the windows of our SUVs and wish they'd just vanish between sips of double lattes.

The reality is that allowing people to live in poverty in a country as rich as our's is a MORAL issue. There's no reason we should have people who lack health care coverage or that an estimated 13 MILLION children go hungry every day. Children. I suppose they should just go out and get a job and make something of themselves.

The worst part of all of this nonsense in my opinion is that you right wingers like to pretend you occupy the moral highground. But, last time I read the Bible, the book so many of you thumpers like to point to, Jesus wasn't blaming the poor, the sick, and the disabled for their plight.

I see your point... it's not their fault they don't apply for the free healthcare or unemployment benefits or low income benefits that the government offers to everyone.

My family was poor.. It's hard when you're poor and something goes wrong. If your car messes up, u have to choose between getting it fixed or paying the bills. You have to choose between buying ur kids things for school or paying the water or light. You either have to choose between paying one thing or another or you don't have enough money to pay for either. I remember the first time I went to seek government aid to find a job. I had quit my previous job and they asked if I wanted to receive unemployment. If you apply for the benefits, you usually get more than you need to pay for an adequate place to stay, etc. I said no..because I didn't want it and I know I didn't need it. If one constantly overspends on their budget or they don't apply for benefits.. then whose fault is it....

  4. How odd.. I was actually going to ask about this. My girl is from overseas and it seems all she ever wants to eat is Japanese food. I've never officially asked her, but I've been wanting to take her to a nice one. She loved Todai's.. I think it's good but not amazing, for almost $25/person, you'd expect a buffet to knock your socks off.. and from what I gather, it seems her and her friends think that Teppay's and Azuma are maybe the best.

  5. In my opinion, Houston is more on par with Dallas, Atlanta, Denver, and Phoenix etc. It may not be NY or Boston, but it is certainly not Detroit either.

By the way, just so that I am clear, I am not directing this post at you, 27, but to anyone who thinks Houston and Detroit are alike. On Fodor's forum, a poster asked what were good places to visit in Texas. Some jerk responded and listed every hell hole in the state as a good place to visit and then mentioned in all caps "Avoid Houston; it is worst than Detroit!" Luckily, I was there to shut her up for good.

Honestly, I seriously think Fodor's hates Texas..or am i thinking of Frommer's?

    About your opinion..

These are the first tier GWC cities... Amsterdam, Boston, Caracas, Dallas, D

  6. my mom's house. :)

danax you should give the 100% taquito a try.  it's on the southside of 59south inside the loop.  i don't remember if they had a veggie variation, maybe something with avocados.  maybe trophy property knows since he goes there????

is a burrito mexican?  I thought that was an american invention.

First, I'm sure most mexicans in Houston definitely agree with that. The best mexican food in the city is from either their mom, grandma, or an aunt. :D

The deepest history I've ever found for the burrito is that it comes from northern Sonora, but it's shunned by most of Mexico as an american food. So, I guess one would consider it an adopted american-mexican food. The reason it was invented and it's namesake are both obvious.

Burrito offsprings - The chimichanga is from Tucson, and the "mission" burrito, aka "california burrito", is from SF.

Fajitas are from Texas, it became popular after being given as payment to cowhands and vaqueros. Through most of history, the skirt steak was considered a very undesirable cut of meat. In Mexico, they are called Arracheras. They were very tough and not very juicy, so only the poorest families bought the skirt steak. Modern Arrachera is usually made with fajita, not arrrachera.

Carne Asada, Mexico's version of barbecue(Barbacoa is not barbecue it's roasted cow head, and Barbecue refers to american/texas barbecue) and comes from Tamaulipas(north and central). Normal ingredients are the meat, oranges, beer, and onions. It is usually served with corn tortillas and is usually accompanied with beer, guacamole, totopitos, and frijoles a la charra. The dish "Carne Asada(a la Tampique

  7. Hmm. I've never heard of that. Do you know of any restaurants that serve that?

It's just the name for almost any rice dish made where brown rice is prominent. In spanish brown rice is called arroz integral, not arroz cafe. It's not very popular in traditional Mexican or Tex-Mex restaurants. It's more popular in restaurants that serve New Spanish, Noveau Latino, Southwestern, New Brazilian, Thai, Indonesian, "Health", or Indian cuisine.

Last year I was taken to lunch at a restaurant near Kirby & 59. I'm sorry, I don't remember the name. I ordered some enchiladas and when my food arrived.. there was arroz integral and frijoles negras. I wanted traditional, but was too hungry to say anything. :D

  8. I don't want to found like some food snob but I have yet to find the Mexican restaurant that I am looking for. Maybe it's Cal-Mex or Organi-Mex but I like brown rice and sauteed veggies instead the usual. Los Ang. used to have lots of places like that.. any ideas?

I've done Chipotle and Mission burritos and they are just so-so.

About your mystery rice, I believe you are talking about Arroz Integral.
