According to the Houston Architectural Guide, Lamar High School was designed by John F. Staub and Kenneth Franzheim (with Louis A. Glover, Lamar Q. Cato, and Harry D. Payne). The Texas Map is by Nino Lenarduzzi.

I thought Kirby Drive was named after John Kirby Allen, one of the Allen Brothers that founded the city of Houston in 1836.

I heard when the transformer at US 59 @ Kirby exploded. I was at school when I heard the explosions. All of us students were shoked to see black smoke climbing into the air. The electricity went out and we were all terrified. The school finally decided, two hours later, to release us. I took the adbantage and took a picture of it from Lamar High School from the third floor...
It was a shoking scene.
