  1. ... because, at that time, no one was aware that it could have been a problem.

Remember Joan Hill "died" in 1969. The term "toxic shock syndrome" was coined in 1978 to identify an especially nasty staphylococcal infection that had been around since the 1920s.

That's the point: The name, "Toxic Shock Syndrome" was coined in 1969 (although it may have existed at the time), so they couldn't call what she had, "Toxic Shock Syndrome" in 1969.

Her symptoms were indeed consistent with that which was later referred to as "Toxic Shock Syndrome".

The question was, and still is, how did she contract the bacterial infection?

  2. I recall mention of Joan Robinson Hill's symptoms being consistent with Toxic Shock Syndrome, a rare, life-threatening bacterial infection that has been most often associated with the use of superabsorbent tampons and occasionally with the use of contraceptive sponges.

  3. I attended Shakespeare Swim Club & School [sic] for nursery & kindergarten (circa 1960). "Shakie's" was located in the Rice Village on Quenby at Kelvin. The structure is still standing, and it is now a Montessori School.

Learning to swim (and swim technically correct) at an early age was great...and fun.

Anyone have any info on "Shakie"?

  4. The Hills lived down the street from us in Southgate, prior to living in River Oaks. As an 8 year old kid, I remember them as very nice people. My parents were friends with them, and remember them as very nice people.

I remember Joan Robinson as very outgoing and confident...she seemed to always have a smile on her face. I remember John Hill as a nice man, clean-cut man.

The movie, as I recall painted him as kaniving (sp?) and her as overly dependent on him, neither which seemed to be true.

  5. Love the avatar, Southgater! Unfortunately the Village Theater was already closed by the time I was old enough to remember going to movies. However, I remember going to World Toys as a kid. That store had a very distinct smell that I will never forget - similar to the way that old houses smell when nothing inside has been changed for 40 yrs...
The toy store was very convenient...you could buy your pea shooters prior to the start of the movie.
