This map shows the Spring Branch Country Club between I-10 and Clay road. Maybe that's the golf course you speak of.

Historic aerials shows a possible course (manicured land) in the 1957 map, and the school in the 1964 map in that location.

was a 9 hole course on Witte Road that it?

  2. I was driving in those areas today and its' getting hard to spot the original homes. Fortunately a lot of the google car street side photos preserved some of the old ones. I grew up in the Oak Forest area. Amazing how things have changed in 60 years.

  3. Sometimes when I am using Uber maps or Waze, I'll be told to turn on a street (usually a very new street) and the name was not the same as the street sign. Maybe a developer of the subdivision changed it. Anyone run across this? I know this is not completely historic, but I did not know what topic to place it in. Several years back there was a great discussion of Houston area roads that changed names. That was a a fun discussion.

  4. There was a miniature golf course on Yale, north of Loop 610, during the 1960s, going north, on the right side, just before the railroad tracks. The putting surfaces had black felt instead of green. I either went there on a birthday or with Cub Scouts. It was already kind of worn out at that point. Sad that most putt putt courses are gone.

  5. I grew up in Houston and remember some interesting things from my youth. One of the funniest to me was at the interchange of Interstate 10 at US 59 north of downtown, as that interchange was being built in the early and mid 60s. The way I remember it was that US 59 was completed, but not nearly as wide as today - it was only like two maybe three lanes wide. Interstate 10 ran to the west but only for about 1/4 mile - like the interchange led you into the freeway, but then almost right away to the service road as the main lanes were either proposed or under construction. Here's what I thought was funny - all the "pieces" of Interstate 10 to the east ended with a dead end barricade. There was like four or five barricades in a row on little short pieces of roads. As a young kid I wondered why the pavement kept going on the main lanes and all the future exits but then ended with barricades. I think some of the barricades ended like a few yards from Jensen. Why didn't the service road or exit just go ahead and go to Jensen? -- The other funny thing was a really strange exit at IH 610 and 10 near Memorial Park. The exit went to the left and to Old Katy Road. Then you took Old Katy as US 90 to Washington Avenue. Anyone have any other memories of funny road or weird road situations? thanks

  6. For years, Houston road maps showed a whole subdivision of streets in the area along Bingle between Tidwell and Pinemont. Most of these streets were never built. Some only extend a few yards off of Tidwell. Yet the road maps carried the whole subdivision of streets for years. Anyone know why this is? -- Also on some old maps and possibly the Key Map, streets are shown with -------- going across. At first, I thought this meant proposed, but these aren't proposed streets. Does the ---- indicate it was a street at one time? Is it a pathway? An overgrown street? A section never built? Anyone have any answers - I'm really curious on that one. Thanks.

  7. Calhoun in downtown is now St. Joseph Parkway

Addicks Fairbanks is Eldridge Parkway even though the key map shows BOTH names!

I think Grant, Jones and Mills Road all swapped names at one point.

Jetero might have been known as Jet Arrow right at first.

Rick Road became the South Loop Service Road

South Post Oak became the West Loop, kind of

Bissonnett was originally called Richmond Road

Just about all the streets in Bear Creek Park have been renamed some time or another

    A 1952 Houston map shows

Part of Little York is called Fairbanks-West Montgomery

Either Pinemont or Creekmont is called Pearson

Here is the link for a lot more fun in 1952 - http://www.texasfreeway.com/Houston/histor...ble_highres.jpg.

  8. In another thread people are talking about an abandoned road at the Addickes reservoir. There's a link in one of the replies to a web site which features this abandoned road.

The abandoned road at Addicks Reservoir is the old section of Addicks-Fairbanks Road (now called Eldridge Parkway).

Elsewhere on that excellent web site, however is this link, which shows an abandoned bridge. What looks like a very new one. Does anyone know anything about this?

  9. I just thought of another road that was covered up to make way for an extension - Eldridge Parkway north of 1960 makes a bend just south of Cypress North Houston Road. This curved section was formerly a street called Susquannah (not sure of spelling).

Another obscure one was when the Antoine extension was built from 290 to Hempstead Road, it went over the top of a tiny street called either March or May Street. April Street still exists a couple blocks down.

Does anyone know why Ora Street was closed? It's a short street near Dacoma and Hempstead. I've seen other funny things with sections of streets barricaded.

Wow that was great about all those streets. Here's another good bit of trivia - the Gulf Freeway was never a "full freeway" until the 70s. Highways with crossovers are not freeways.

I have some web sites of abandoned highways, bridges and "lost" highways if anyone might be interested. I have also been thinking about taking pictures of abandoned streets in the Houston area if there was any interest - I know of at least a dozen places where the concrete remains from old roadways - North Houston Rosslyn, Perry Road, FM 529 just to name some.

  10. Many old Houston city maps have Breen Road listed as Mulberry Street. Was the named changed, possibly around 1965 or 66? Why was the name of the road changed?

I know many other roads in Houston had names changed - South Park to MLK, ?? to Sgt. Macario, even T. C. Jester was originally called White Oak Drive.

Sometimes pieces of roads were absorbed into longer roads when the extensions were built. Antoine took over a short street called Oxbow, T.C. Jester took over a street called Telford. T. C. Jester took over Leroy Street. etc. any other examples? probably many!

  11. Hello everyone. This is Martin (Marty) Blaise. I have just joined the forum. I have a (strange?) hobby of interest in abandoned/old highways and roads. I have quite a few photos on several web sites, including some photos of present day Old Main. A lot of Old Main Street is now gone. Some other Houston area streets that include sections of old pavement include Mangum, N Houston Rosslyn, Ora, FM 529, many streets just off Elysian, Rankin Road, Shadowdale, Clay Road, SH 249, Old North Belt, Old Katy Road ..... if you look hard enough you can find many, many abandoned sections of streets or patches of old pavement. I am also interested in the weird history of roads such as - two service road bridges over a bayou for Loop 201 (now 146 in Baytown) near Garth Road were built years before construction every started on anything else. There were just 2 bridges surrounded by grass. The only to get to them was by walking or maybe bicycle. Another weird one was on West Airport Blvd. near the Southwest Freeway. Only one of the two sides of the divided street was completed, but there were two bridges over a creek (both sides were completed, only at the point of the bridges). And of course my all time favorite, well-documented on houstonfreeways.com is the "orphan" bridge that topped IH 45 near downtown from 1962-1972. As a youth I was puzzled why anyone would put up part of a bridge over the top of a freeway. --- By the way, on a different note -- maybe someone can help me -- I am looking for a photo of the old water tower at Andrau Air Park -- it had a unique design. Thanks.
