  1. Anyone recall these two places along the river? Giusecke was a set of cabins downstream from Warnecke. Warnecke had the low dam across the river with a hole busted in it to allow "tubers" to ride the rapids.

I believe the second camp (Camp Giusecke) became The Other Place. Camp Warnecke is gone. Eaten up by Schlitterbahn.

  2. My favorite restaurant in the 70's was The Happy Buddha on lower Westheimer. It burned multiple times in the 80's.

I loved Hamburgers by Gourmet. There used to be a number of locations, even a few in Austin.

I loved Chili's way back at the beginning when damn near all they had was Chili Dogs.

Favorite Chinese was Timmy Chan's on Main (Or maybe Fannin or San Jacinto) between 59 and the Med Center.

Bonanza was a pit. The Sizzler was the place to go for quality.

    Albriton's Cafeteria.

    Spud-U-Like on lower Westheimer.

    The River Cafe on Montrose.

    Stak's on Montrose.

The Pot Pie (before they were a pizza place)

    Horsey Burger!

  3. It seems like no matter when the image is taken, the circle without the cross has that body of water in it that looks like a square. Is it a spring? Wouldn't it dry out sometimes if it were only fed by rain? If it is a spring or some kind of natural pool, does that give us any clues?

I know I came late to the forum, and this may be a silly queston, but it just occured to me.

  4. I copied this from a post I made on the Air Raid siren thread:

I believe the Air Raid Siren downtown was still being used until at least the late 80's. It was not on City Hall, however.

The Siren belonged to the County. I know that in the late 60's -early 70's it was on top of the Family Law Center. The new Harris County Courthouse was still being built. My mother worked for the county judge at the time (Bill Elliott) and the siren was on the roof directly abover her office. He was officing there until the new courthouse was complete. We used to get on a tiny private elevator that went from the lobby to the county judge's office on the top floor. One could hear the siren for miles and miles. The siren also rotated. When it went off you could hear it vaguely until it rotated to face your direction and then it was quite loud, even in the museum district. Then it would rotate away and you would wait until you could hear it again. It was a very low wailing siren. I loved it. I would wake up on Fridays and I could hardly wait until noon to hear it.I don't know if the siren was moved to the top of The County Courthouse bulding or not.

I can't believe that my post has the words Eleanor Tinsley Park on it. I hated that wretched, hideous, old hag and celebrated when she was no longer part of city government and now her name is on my post. Eeeeeeeew.

  5. Does anyone remember The Happy Buddha on lower Westheimer? They did the chop everything up at the table thing like Benihana. There was a courtyard that had a fake thunderstorm (complete with water, thunder, and lightning) about every thirty minutes? The place burned numerous times in the early to mid 80's. When I was little, I wanted to have my 16th birthday party there. It wasn't really a place for kids, though.

Also, does anyone remember how many Hamburgers by Gourmet there were in Houston? They were amazing. The #10 and some onion rings really hit the spot. I think they had locations in Austin, too. The last one was on Alabama next to The University of St Thomas. They tore it down to build a chapel. I'd rather still have HBG.
