  1. Hello all!

My garage apartment has asbestos shingles which generally are in very good condition. However a few on the back side have broken, leading to water getting in the garage.

As the great majority of shingles are fine (and I currently don't have the funds to put up all new siding), are there any local companies that can replace the few that are damaged with a comparable product? The most damaged ones face a fence behind the garage, so I'm not really concerned about how well the replacements match to the existing ones; I really just want to stop the water from getting in until I can have the whole thing replaced.

    Thanks!

  2. I'm a happy resident, coming up on one year of ownership!

The neighborhood is quiet at night, aside from the random rooster and train, but you get used to that.

i actually quite like the train, but man oh MAN do i hate those roosters!! should someone decide to have a chicken cookout, i'm all in favor of it (this coming from a vegetarian!)

but seriously, it's great to hear about so many new people moving into the neighborhood in the last couple years. the neighborhood has always been nice, and with folks coming in to invest in fixing up some of these cool houses while settling in for awhile, it will only get better.

Hooray for Broadmoor! Hooray for chickens (as long as they aren't tearing up my yard).

  3. My husband and I (26 & 25 y/o) are going to look at a couple of fixer-upper 30's bungalows for sale on Scharpe Street this week. We're young and motivated and looking for an inexpensive starter home that we could fix up before having kids. This seems like a great area for us, as it's close to a lot of things and driving through seems like a pleasant neighborhood. And the houses are adorable.

Anyone have any thoughts? I emailed Scharpe St Guy about it and he loves the neighborhood. Any complaints? Is it frightening at night? My husband works in Southpark/Sunnyside area and I found it to be a little rough for me down there. I think this area may be a bit nicer, though?

Broadmoor is a terrific neighborhood: very affordable, great location, and safe. I've lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, and feel fortunate to have gotten in when I did. Hopefully, more people will be buying in order to reside rather than rent out - the more owners we can get who live in their houses, the better it will continue being.

Drawbacks: the sidewalks are horrible, some of the streets don't drain off as well as others, and the occasional criminal mischief (a few years ago, someone broke my car's passenger window & tried to steal my broken cassette player. yes, someone tried to steal my CASSETTE player, and FAILED.) (what is the street value of a non-functioning tape player nowadays?) I experienced more crime when I lived in the Montrose area. again, the more actual residents the neighborhood gets, the safer it'll be.

    Good luck!

  4. Queen of Peace just celebrated its 65th anniversary on April. It's a small, simple church with nice stained grass, especially the one over the choir.

Don't know much about its early history, but the church today is in great shape and shows no signs of disrepair. A new AC unit was installed last year and the interiors received a fresh coat of paint this spring. The parish was taken over by an outstanding young pastor belonging to the Companions of the Cross (they also run the Catholic Charismatic Center in Cullen) nearly 7 years ago. Evidently he was all by himself at first, taught himself Spanish and had to tackle a lot of challenges. By all accounts the turnaround has been remarkable -- the school itself has nearly quadrupled in attendance -- and some masses are now standing-room only. The two other parish priests are excellent as well and very down-to-earth.

agreed! i started attending services there last year because of its unassuming, humble nature (can't say that about all catholic churches!) father christian (no relation to sister christian, natch) is an excellent pastor from what i've seen. the sunday late morning masses are hopping and quite enthusiastic. while it seems as there's been not too much updating of the inner decor in some time, it has kind of a retro feel that adds to its charm. here's a link to the church:

  5. i still miss the Tel-45 diner that eventually turned into Mr. Money. when i moved to the area in 1998, my roommate & i would go there at least 3-4 times a week, usually after midnight, get really cheap grilled cheese sandwiches & coffee, and play cards until 2 or 3 in the morning. nowadays, every time i pass mr money, i curse him (or the sign, anyway) for taking away my youth. and the french fries & gravy, too.

  6. You have a source for that?, I'd be interested to know if they are truley going to make another one.

    They are really nice inside.

i'd actually be surprised if it was not a whole foods. they've been looking for a downtown houston location for a few years, and a few of their other metropolitan downtown stores are at the bottom of high rises.

    whole foods rules!!!
