  1. Sorry about the quality but these are from 1963 8mm film. Note the Carrousel Hotel in the background of one of these shots. This was my sixth birthday party.

Susan, OMG! This brings back SO MANY memories! This is SO AWESOME! LOL! There's that huge, giant rollercoaster that made me so fearful! Now I absolutely LOVE rollercoasters! LOL! That thing had to be no more than 2 - 5 feet off the ground! That train is very memorable! WOW! This is awesome! Thanks so much for doing this for the rest of us who have no photos of our childhood memory of Peppermint Park! This is GREAT! The plane ride, the train, the rollercoaster! What fun we had in the old days! HA! LOL!

  2. We had just moved to south Houston (Meadowbrook) from Texas City. Our home in Texas City was completely flooded up to the second floor. We were lucky to have moved when we did, otherwise, we would have been in big trouble! Our home was right on the seawall in Texas City. We rode out the storm in our home in south Houston, and I remember it was really bad, but not anywhere near what my sister went through recently in Gulfbreeze, FL, they lost everything, nor the hurricane of 1900 in Galveston where so many lost their lives!

  3. This home video is so great and brings back my childhood like it was yesterday! I too am now 52, and I remember that I had the chicken pox, and I was supposed to stay inside in the dark. But, I snuck outside to see what all that white stuff was, and got into big trouble from my Mom for going outside! The next time it snowed, I was a senior at Milby High School and it even made the Sr. year book that year! I now live in Colorado, where we have had more than my share of snow this year! I am ready to move back to sweet 'ole Texas!!!

  4. It had a half circle driveway in front and a big concrete fence in front so you could only catch a little glimpse of the property through the 2 gates that were iron. It was very big and very spooky. In the early 70's, my church had a haunted house party there. All I remember was palm trees around the house and a spiral staircase in very poor condition in the front room and a riding stable and what looked like a smaller house in back. My brother said some biker group lived in it for a while before the police found out they were there and chased them out. I can't find pictures of the place anywhere or even anything written about it. It was torn down right after that holloween party . There was also a big church to the south of it but its a school now. Does anyone know anything about the house or the family? Thanks in advance, Susan

OMG! I was going to ask you if you remember, or knew about this place! We used to go there in high school, and we used to call it the Wayside Mansion. It was so scary. A lot of the neighborhood kids would go lurking around the property at night and we would scare each other to death!!!! The stairs in the main part of the house didn't have any railing nor did the second story, and one night our friend Bobby fell from the second story - than God he didn't get hurt! There was a big old swimming pool in the back of the house, all cracked and decayed. There was a really old metal merry go round for kids. There was an old servant quarters, which had a hole in the ground, where the mechanic could go in to work on the old cars. There was also a building that we think was an old school house. There was also a brick silo on the property. We used to absolutely love going to that place! We got in from the church property, because there was a hole in the fence and we would crawl through. We found a lot of old motorcycle parts and junk, remnants of the bikers who used to hang out there and party. In the basement of the old house was a long narrow hall that led to a metal door which was some type of private vault. We always thought of it as a haunted house, and after we would visit, we were always scared to death! Such great memories, and we were so sad when they tore it down to build - I think - apartments. The brick silo remained, if I can remember correctly.

  5. I don't know exactly when it closed, but it was demolished in 1971.

That is a sad word, demolished... I am trying to find the answer for a friend who recently purchased a piece of memorbilia from the old hotel. If anyone can find the answer, it would be great! I went to Milby H.S., so the answer is also one for myself, being a "buff" of the Milby heritage. Thanks!!!

  6. Can anyone tell me when the The Milby Hotel in downtown Houston originally closed?

Edit: It looks like the address for The Milby Hotel changed between decades. In 1923, the address was 607 Travis Street.  In 1945, the address was changed to 902 Texas Avenue.  Building re-positioning?

  7. Well, I'm 47. I remember going to Peppermint Park by Gulfgate Shopping City (now Mall) when I lived in Houston from 1962-64. Are you saying that it went out of business fairly recently?

Yep! I'm 52 and have very fond memories of Peppermint Park, right next to Gulfgate Mall! The good 'ole days! What fun!!!

There was a monorail at Hobby? When was that? What did it connect? I couldn't find any information about it.

Here is the picture and caption from that monorail site:

Now my question is what was "Arrowhead Park"? Was this an amusement park? I couldn't find it on a map of Houston from the mid-1950s.

I remember this monorail, and riding it, but I cannot remember where it was. I did live very close to Hobby Airport, but it seems to me that it was at an amusement park somewhere in Houston. I am not aware of Arrowhead Park though. Could it have been at the old Six Flags? Now I'm really curious!!

  8. I also went there as a kid. My husband thinks it's just a figmant of my imagination. I am so glad that others remember it. I would love to see photos of it.

Peppermint Park! Oh My! We used to go to birthday parties there, and I remember one time when me and my sister must have been 5 & 7 rode the tiny rollercoaster outside, and it felt like the Texas Tornado at the time! We were so scared! It was originally located near the Gulfgate Mall, back in the 60s! What memories. I would love to have a photo of that place!
