  1. I too am going on a 40+ year memory, but there was a (M-A-C) MacDonalds on Main across the street, east, from 2016 Main. Very similar to Princes, about the same menu and car hop service. I know it was there from early 60's until at least 1967. I believe the Greyhound? bus station is there now.

  2. According to Wikipedia, when Oak Forest subdivision was first developed by Frank Sharp in 1946-1947, it was in the Aldine ISD. The transition period from AISD to HISD is fairly vague.

    From Wiki:

"When it was first established, Oak Forest was a golf course and a part of the Aldine Independent School District. The land was ceded to Houston ISD. The original Oak Forest Elementary was built in 1951,"

  3. In posts #8 there is a picture of dragsters in 1958 at Freeway Dragstrip. In the front row left is Buggs Threadgill's Oldsmobile

powered A/Fuel Dragster. Well, Buggs is still around , I saw him Sunday, and still fooling around with fast (street) cars. Not many people stick with a hobby for over 50 years. He drives a somewhat? modifed black Olds 442 convertible. Beautiful car.

  4. What a coincidence this post is. I used to attend this church in the '50s and was by there last week. My wife was out of town and I was planning to attend Sunday services there just for old time's sake. The telephone was disconnected so I did a drive by to see what time it started. Anyway, it is no longer Reid Memorial, it is a Hispanic Church now, I don't remember the name.

The cornerstone on the sanctuary says 1941.

  5. Since I already bent this thread: Tiny also used to work the Garden Oaks and N. Main theatres and the sock hops at Moody Park. I remember there was a picture in one of the three Houston papers

of Tiny standing next to a Crosley car. My sister got his autograph. She also got the manager of our grocery store and the mailman.

With in the past 5 or so years, there was an Obit in the Chron on a Tincey Roman. IIRC, he was 91 years old and lived in Wiemar, Schulenberg, Columbus area. As best I could tell, Tincey was this guys given name. Not sure if it's Tiny or not.

We need more Tiny Romans around today. The worst thing that would have happened when Tiny was around was some kid cutting in line.

  6. The Mykawa Rd. Prison Farm was known as the P-Farm. I and I'd bet alot of people, though it was the Pea Farm. I got stopped as teen in the 60's for some (alleged) traffic violation. The policeman told me if if didn't shut my smart mouth that he was going to arrest me and my fingers would "turn green from picking peas out at the pea farm".

It wasn't him that was going to make me a convict, but does anyone on here remember a Police Officer namd Tiny Roman? For years, it seemed, he worked andextra job at every skating rink, movie theatre and public dance in town. He was a great big 6'4" + guy and super nice.

  7. Westheimer, west of Dairy Ashford was named Westheimer Beeler Rd.. In my 1990 Key Map, it still showed up that way. One of the Beelers was a friend of my father. Apparently, the Beelers operated a ranch in that area. A story I heard was that the elder Mr. Beeler gave 40 acres to a former ranch hand, Mr. Roquemore, who operated a dirt yard from the land for many years, it closed maybe 10 years ago. Fortunately for the Roquemores, the 40 acres fronted on Westheimer.

Another name changed street in town that I have not seen mentioned is perhaps the most famous of all, MLK. If my memory is working today, I think that used to be Southpark or South Park.

MLK is near the neighborhhod with all of the great WW2 names, Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Kassarine Pass, Bataan, Anzio, etc. Gosh, I wonder when that neighborhood was built and who the target residents were?

  8. I am positive the park and the coaster were still there and operating in spring of 1964. That was the year I got my driver's license and I took a date there. I remember it so vividly because my cute little 16 year old date earped on me on the roller coaster. I saw her a coupe of years ago at a class reunion, and I know she remembers it. She still didn't think it was so funny.

  10. The Old Treeline GC, off 249 North of town, I think, just succumbed to the bulldozer and is going to be a tract house development. Inwood Forest off Antoine was supposed to close this past spring. If it's still open, I suspect its days are numbered. One of the oldest (I think) courses still open that hardly anyone has ever played on is the Texaco Golf Club on the east side. It's been public for some time and was still open a few months ago. For a long time, the cheapest golf in town was at the old Channelview Golf Course off Sheldon Road. It had originally been a "company" golf course for, if memory serves, Hughes Tool Co. It closed around 5 years ago, maybe longer. I had a lengthy project going out that way 12 or 15 years ago and I joined for $30 a month

  11. I am going to self correct here. After a second look at the picture of the shopping center in the brochure, I'm sure that that is not a picture of Spell's Pharmacy on Fulton. It's a picture of Lindale Park Pharmacy at 6030 Irvington. It bugged me so much that I went by there and took a look at both buildings. 6030 Irvington is where Irvington crosses under Loop 610. The 6030 number would be under the overpass. At 6010 Irvington is an abbreviated version of the strip center where the pharmacy was. It is now Dawson's Pest Control Chemicals. HCAD says it was built in 1940. I suspect it was moved for the freeway contruction and part of the building (south end) was cut off, or they lopped of the north end and moved the entry door. Dawson's door entry is built into the corner of the building, just like the picture in the brochure. I discovered most of this by looking at a 1949 Houston telephone book. BTW, Lindale Pharmacy's tel no. is ME-3611 in case anyone needs any antique drugs.

  12. The "shopping center" shown in the brouchere is at about the 4900-5000 block of Fulton, maybe at the NE corner of Gale and Fulton. The drugstore shown was Spell's Pharmacy (at least it was in the 50's). I don't remember what else was in the strip center. Apparently nothing that would interest a 9 year old. I do remember that Spell's had a fountain/ lunch counter. If I saved up my lunch money, I'd stop there on the way home from school and get a nickel cherry phosphate. If my friend and I couldn't quite come up with the five cents, we'd kick in and buy one together and ask for two straws. From that point on, it was a race.

I believe the building may still be there. It was just south of the Al-Ray Theater, which has been mentioned in this forum before.

  13. I lived in Lindale up until 1958 as a kid. Does anyone know where the golf course was? I remember hearing about it but never knew where it was. That's a great picture of Linder Lake.

Linder Lake snack bar made the world's best hamburgers. I'm pretty sure my opinion about the burgers had nothing to do with being an eight year old boy who had been swimming for about five hours before I got my burger.
