The actual corner was a Texaco. Across from Stahlman's Lumber.

There was a place called "Bardio" there in the 60s to 80s in the space that's now Magic Island (currently abandoned). Just 2 floors though. Might have dated from the adoptation of liquor-by-the-drink here in Houston. Had transmitter tower on the sign.

Brucesw is dead on. The sunken gardens were a great source of income to the tow truck drivers of the era, long before liquor by the drink in the city.

The original deed of gift states that it is to be used exclusively as a public park. Of course, the same applied to Memorial Park. When the property which was developed into Uptown Park (part of the original gift) was sold for development, a pet judge was found, who declared that "replacing" the sold acreage would suffice.

DAmn, response went to the wrong post, but to go on topic, check your local church bulletins (you don't have to go to the church, just slide by and pick up a copy of the bulletin. Tell 'em you need it to remember the times of the services, for your cousin, who's a house guest.)

This pic. Ties and dress are around '74. I just can't remember the skyline from that period. It's like it was changing every day!
