    Maybe it will be overall for better for the city of Houston, but that view coming into downtown from 45 will be severely diminished by paralleling it with 59.

    I personally think that the view coming into downtown is a lot more impressive from a distance ... when you get right on top of downtown you lose perspective of the "Emerald City-esque" skyline. Besides,from what I understand  the western portion will remain as a spur to allow access into downtown.

    I'd be down with leaving a few sections up, but ONLY where it crosses over streets ..... it would preserve  possible "vista" points into downtown while still leaving all the blocks for future development into housing and offices. Over time these could be connected into an elevated park/walkway system between new buildings built all along the section..... essential a second "street" level much like what is done in many large cities overseas

    I think METRO wants to work on the Inner Katy BRT regardless of the HSR project (on their project map I think the extension from NWTC to Northwest Mall is only shown as conceptual) because 1) it’ll be another (maybe faster?) route into Downtown from Uptown and also serve people living along the I-10 corridor. I believe The University Line stops at Wheeler Transit Center and you have to transfer to the Red Line. Inner Katy doesn’t require any transferring. They badly want that connection- one of the specific reasons they’ve given is because they want to link the hotel capacity between Uptown and the east side of Downtown (so…GRB, basically) since the BRT extension will also run along the Green/Purple Line alignment downtown and to St Emmanuel St without any transfers).

    Inner Katy BRT transfers at Northwest Transit Center and (i believe) the future west terminus of the LRT in the city courts area. That makes at least two or perhaps three transfers to get to mid downtown from the Galleria ..... the University Line route would also be two  (Bellaire and Wheeler).  Most people don't like even one .....

    I wish, but if history has taught me anything, they will rebuild all the sections of the BRT route except the stretch from the spur through Shepherd .... they obviously think that rotten roads and broken sidewalks add "character" to the neighborhood

    Tearing down Pierce will take away one of the most majestic views in the entire state, which will be a major loss for the city of Houston.  But i'm all for burying or capping parts of the 59, more specificially by George R. Brown which will connect downtown with the rest of East downtown (Eado). 

    I don't consider the Pierce elevated to have "majestic views" either from on top (safer if eyes are on the road) nor underneath it (dodgy parking lots / homeless encampments/ high crime rates).

     

    For Houston's sake ..... TEAR IT DOWN. Sell some and make a few other parts into parks. The inner city will be much better for it and property values in midtown will soar.

  7. Next question .... how will the cancellation of this project affect the proposed BRT link along I-10 as future transit demand along that route was predicated on the Texas Central being built. Anyone still wanting to get to the Galleria from downtown/Medical Center will still be able to use the "University Line" (a less expensive buildout) so why build spend the extra funds at this time?

    Perhaps your data only counted construction within the city limits ..... the metro suburbs, which are  mostly outside city limits (by design),  have been growing at almost an uncontrollable rate.

    In a way it already is ..... the VALUE of the land are segregated out, and if the land values go up due to location desirability then the taxes go up.  Unfortunately, the desirability of being inside the loop has been dropping or stagnant for a decade or more compared to the Houston suburbs where most people look to buy for better schools and/or larger yards/houses for the same money.  Increasing land taxes inside the city will only make things worse as it will continue to drive people out.
