  1. That was the style in the 1950's when they butchered that beautiful old building. The problem the new owners are having is....as they remove the old 50's crap, the old bricks are coming down with the "new" stucco like material. Test areas show how the old brick is too soft and crumbling as the 50's facade comes down. It looks as though it may be too expensive to save this building. Much less expensive to tear down and replace with something else.

I got that info from a contractor that has been on the job site....it is on hold until the owners decide how much money to dump into it.

  2. JFK used the International Suite on the 5th floor of the Rice to change clothes and rest before going to the Coliseum.

He spent his last night in Rm. 850 of the Texas Hotel in Ft. Worth.

That's correct...spoke to hundreds at a Breakfast in the Hotel Ballroom, and then went outside to speak to the crowd there in what is now Sundance Square. His last speech. He and Jackie flew to Dallas, where as we all know, he was shot before he made it to the luncheon at the Trade Mart.

  3. Forgetting about the design elements, the Gaylord will work. I spent 20 years in the Hotel business in Dallas and opposed this project at first....too many rooms..but the Gaylord Dallas is it's own destination, and has created its own market.

But getting back to the design elements, yes all that Texana decor is a little cheesy. The good thing is that the resort is on Lake Grapevine which is a really nice lake.

When I think of Houston, I think of cutting edge modern architecture... maybe that could be the "theme" of Houston's Gaylord.
